I walk my lawn for 10 minutes each day pulling weeds by hand early in spring. After one month, all weeds are gone. And each day I see way less weeds. Instead of watching a commercial on TV, go walk your lawn pulling a few weeds each time, After one month you will have a weed free lawn.

Its hot and dry in Australia so i use a product called biagra as well as a granular wetter. For my conditions i also find its a must to do a scalp....but your yard is big so thats a lot of mess.

I’m in Texas where we’ve had record breaking heat this summer and the idea of cutting my Bermuda 1” is terrifying. There’s not enough water in the county to keep it green. When I was running the family lawncare company, we were cutting Bermuda at 3” and St Augustine at 4” or higher. I’d love to have a lawn looking like a fairway, though. Maybe someday.

If I may add something that is always overlooked. Get a soil sample test that provides your soil composition. Everything you throw at/on your lawn i.e. water, macros, micros, herbicides, etc…. is affected greatly by your soil composition. For example, my backyard is 89% sand. This means that water, fertilizers, etc percolate thru my sandy soil very fast. So much so that applications, especially water, will get past the grass root zone faster. You absolutely have to adjust your maintenance schedule accordingly. Some tips for sandy soil are to use slower release fertilizers that will stay around the root zone for longer. Watering requires special attention. A good test is to water your yard for whatever time that will give you a half inch of water. Wait 1 hour after watering finishes. Use a probe to get a 6 to 8 inch soil plug. Take note of how far the watering has percolated. You can tell where the plug is wet and dry. Use you math skills to calculate the percolating time it will take for the water to start past the root zone, about 6 inches (it all depends on your type of grass and root maturity) From this test you can adjust your maintenance. Your going to find sandy soil requires more frequent everything at smaller amounts. Watering is tricky and expensive because you may have to water more frequently but deep enough to develop deeper roots. Anyhow, hope this helps someone. You can always renovate your lawn which will give you the opportunity to amend your sandy soil but it can get expensive. Also a lot of folks are no till people who don’t want to break up their existing dirt.

Very informative video. The only thing I do not agree with is getting rid of trees to remove shade. Trees grow very slowly and it's a pity to get rid of them solely to remove the shade they cast over the grass. If there is a lot of shade maybe a better option is to use a different type of grass rather than cutting the trees.

Seeing this video makes me feel alot better. All of my neighbors cut their bermuda sod so low. And for some it actually stays green even cut short. But mine I have to cut it around the 3 setting on my push mower for it to stay green. 2 is ok in spots but my front lawn is sloped towards a ditch. Ive only had this house for a year but it seems like July/August is when my bermuda sod is the greenest and thickest and I have to cut it a little higher than my neighbor's yards. I tried the low approach once and havent gone back. Way too brown

Greetings from Australia!!! You can achieve a result almost as good as a reel/cylinder mower with a Rotary by obtaining a new set of blades and FILE; DO NOT GRIND, a new edge of 20 degrees from the bottom side of the blade...get it really sharp like a craftsman's chisel. Install the blades TIGHT so they do not swing back (I understand they are supposed to move), but with Couch grass (Bermuda) if the blade swings back, it will scalp. Keep mower revs high therefore centrifugal force keeping the blade out is high too. DO NOT use a grass catcher, the clip is fertilizer, water in directly after mowing. Cheers from Hunter Valley Australia.

Is it possible to have a nice thick lawn with common bermuda grass? I have my lawn for a year and it still looks terrible. The grass doesn't cover the ground, only growing in patches. In some areas it grows runners but 99.9% of my lawn don't grow runners
@TheALG2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have common bermuda also. There is a few things that have to happen for bermuda to spread. Full sun, Fertilizer and irrigation. What is also helpful is good soil that is not compacted and check to make sure your soil PH is between 6-7. If you can meet all these requirements then your bermuda will grow aggressively.

For soil testing, do I need to send the soil sample somewhere? Does it cost to do it (other than buying the kit).
@TheALG2 жыл бұрын
Yes, your local extension office will send it off from you. It usually cost about 9 dollars. You just go back to where you got the sample bags, they will take care of everything. At least thats what they do in my area.
@pandarush.2 жыл бұрын
@@TheALG Do they supply the pole to get the sample? What is an extension?
@TheALG2 жыл бұрын
No, but you don't really need the pole. You can dig and take a sample about 1 or 2 inches below the grass surface. I dont know where you are located but google search extension office near me. It will show the the closet one and go to their website or inperson.

I keep reading that bermuda chokes out weeds. It isn't true?
@TheALG Жыл бұрын
That is true to an extent. If the bermuda is growing aggressively, it will prevent new weeds from establishing itself. When bermuda growth slows down and goes dormant, weeds easily sneak in. Same can be said if you have weak spots or are battling disease or damage from insects.

@TheALG3 жыл бұрын
Check out green cast soil temperature in Google. Enter your location and when you soil temps drop to 70 degrees for 2 or 3 days, apply a preemergent. As for products, decide if you rather granular or liquid. I Iike prodiamine 65 wdg as a liquid. If you rather granular, then there are lots of granular products out there that I used and had great results. Lesco 007 or sunniland 007 is what I use but there are better products that spread out better. It all depends what your willing to spend. I personally do 2 preemergent apps, one at 70 degrees and one at about 55 degrees.
