I love the details; hand made crocks, old world aluminium flame pressure cooker, quaint wall shelves, enamel cooktop ... the world you share with us feels familiar, warm and comforting. You’ve inspired me to wrangle out an old packet of leek seeds from my collection, and to find a spot for it in the garden. Be well Siloe, and thank you for this week’s video.

Love leeks! I live in Wales UK and leeks are the national vegetable. Like daffodils are our national flower and rugby is the national sport. Not just fantastic in leek and potato soup, but also merely sliced, lightly sauteed in butter or marge and then sprinkled with a tiny bit of salt and ground black pepper. Yum!

Thank you for this video about leeks, Siloe! My 6-year-old son and I love your channel and have been watching for many seasons. You inspired us to create a small garden together in our front yard-our only sunny spot-and we love watching your tips and recipes together. We planted leeks a year ago and many wintered over. We’re now excited to let a few go to seed this coming summer to attract more pollinators. Thank you for the ongoing inspiration across generations.

Lovely as always. Thank you. Growing aliums (bulb and clumping and "spring onions"/ scallions) from seed has been a disappointing activity in my gardens of the last few years... old seed, poor germination, HEAT...Whatever the case the result was always NO ONIONS. So i changed strategy. Potato onion, Egyptian walking onions and purchasing scallions from the store, chopping the bottom inch or 2 of white root and planting that to use as a cut and come again vegetable has given best success. We have had cool (for us!!!) Autumn weather so a slow cooked soup will be perfect today. Thanks Siloe.

I have leeks in the garden too...since I have planted some years ago..they have multiply themselves..I forget to use them...but I enjoy their bloom very much...last year I saw that the blooms turned in very little leak seedlings still on the bloom...some even with small roots and green leek leaves poking out..they falls to the ground and sow themselves.. I took a few and sow them elsewhere and I got myself another patch with leeks I don't even have to worry about saving the seeds..

any time i use mushrooms like you did, i usually toss in the smallest pinch of powdered kelp for a salty ocean flavour. people always wonder why my soups are so good.... it's the seaweed muahahaha! a tablespoon or two of nutritional yeast is also a really great way to up the "creamy" nature of soups.... I'm 100% going to make a split pea and leek soup this week now hah!

The leek blooms look beautiful. I have grown chives and green onions before, but never leeks. I'm going to have to try that and let some go to seed so I can see how many more beneficial insects it will draw. I have a small garden in the front yard per your inspiration. I have "companion" planted so I have flowers growing with my zucchini, collard greens, swiss chard, spinach, and arugula. Your soup looked amazing and reminded me I haven't made a pea soup in quite a while. Thank you for another Sunday, I can't wait till next Sunday!!

Beautiful video as always. I'm curious though, why can't you harvest a leek that has formed a seed head? I'm wondering if that also holds true for garlic. It may explain why my homegrown garlic doesn't taste right. Karen
@suburbanhomestead5 жыл бұрын
Leeks become tough when they flower. Hardneck garlic varieties should flower, but the scapes should be snapped before they actually bloom so the energy goes into making the bulbs bigger.

Great video, I learned a lot! I had heard of yellow peas, and pigeon peas, but didn't know they were the same until I looked them up. I've never eaten either one. Based on the ingredients, your soup sounded wonderful! Could your recipe be considered an ethnic dish? I'm going to check & see if my local grocer carries yellow peas. I grew leeks for the 1st. time last year. Mine didn't flower. I'm glad you explained that they are bi-annuals, flowering in the 2nd. year. I did have two that survived the winter here in SE Michigan, so I look forward to seeing if they flower this year. I do like to provide food for the pollinators, and then I'll be able to harvest seed. Thanks for all the info!

P.S. I did grow my 2018 leeks from seed, indoors. But I would like to try your method of just broadcasting the seed directly. Here in zone 6, should I seed in late fall, or wait until the following spring?

Hello, I have a question for you, I wonder how you keep away snails and slugs? If you or anyone else is able to answer with an environmental friendly method it would be very kind of you. :)
@BouncySlim15 жыл бұрын
Some people place pennies around their beds. I've used beer. Place beer in a small container. Push into soil around the plant. The snails/slugs are attracted to the beer (probably the fermentations) they go into the cup and drown in the beer. Change weekly or after a rain. There are organic pesticide-like products available. Best of everything in your garden
@imaginemyname59575 жыл бұрын
@@BouncySlim1 Thank you very much this was very helpful, I have tried the beer method before, but it seems to attract not only the snails of my garden but the snails from our neighbors as well.
@suburbanhomestead5 жыл бұрын
In the first years I used to have a significant slug problem, as I incorporated mulch and chop and drop more and more, I’ve seen their numbers drop tremendously. Either because they end up eating the abundant already decaying matter or because the mulch houses more predators to slugs.
