I planted Rambutan seeds on 6/26/2018, don't remember how I planted, & just one plant growing. I'm seeing clusters of flowers formed for the first time. I'm watching them closely!
@LuckyDogTraveler3 жыл бұрын
Exciting! From the wiki note: "Rambutan trees can be male (producing only staminate flowers and, hence, produce no fruit), female (producing flowers that are only functionally female) or hermaphroditic (producing flowers that are female with a small percentage of male flowers)." You'll definitely have to keep an eye on it to see what you've got!

Hi! I'm from the Philippines. They say grafted rambutan trees is preferred over seedlings if you want your tree to fruits because majority of trees grown from seeds become male trees and won't ever bear fruits.

Indeed, methods such as grafting and air layering are used to ensure the gender of the plant

Great video. I have tried to germinate rambutan seeds many times but without success. The seeds tend to develop moulds. Do you have any tips to prevent the seeds from going mouldy? Thanks for sharing.
@LuckyDogTraveler2 жыл бұрын
Sorry your getting mold. Are you germinating in moist paper towel or directly in soil? Make sure all the fruit has been removed from the seed. You might also try cleaning the seed with a weak bleach solution (1 part bleach 10 parts water). Let us know how it goes.

For a great all natural mold inhibitor, sprinkle ground cinnamon on the seed and throughout the paper towel.
@garljr Жыл бұрын
You can try soaking it in water until it sprouts. May have to rinse or change the water a few times. Also cover it like a green house container filled with water. Not entirely sure if itll work for ranbutans but it worked for other seeds like dragon fruit, blueberries and so on.

Hi! I usually don't comment on KZbin videos, but I'd like to share my experience, I'm in Torreón, México, it's a dry semi-desert weather with heat around 80-90 F degrees or 27-35 C. So... I don't know a thing about gardening but I planted some rambutan seeds direct to the pot but I didn't t take precautions of washing the white part and I planted with the pointy end up, so I basically screwed up everything :D BUT there are some tiny leaves growing from the pot (also it was an old pot, with old soil so I'm not sure if there are actually rambutan sprouts .-. ) i've seen some videos and all of them grows without leaves at first. I have another 6 seeds that have been in my desk for about 3 weeks and I'm going to try the paper towel method hoping they are still alive xD I'll keep updating

Could you post an update on your rambutan? I have one that's nearly a year old, but it has ZERO leaves and refuses to put on more leaves. The roots are still good and when I scratch the bark, it's still green so it's definitely alive, but barely. It gets watered a lot and fertilized occasionally in full sun so not sure what's wrong here...

Rambutan trees like high humidity and are not frost tolerant. They can sustain severe damage at temperatures below 39 f. I don't want to sound discouraging, but IMHO it will be extremely challenging growing them in this area of Southern California. apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1202

rambutan trees require consistent moisture, especially when young. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and other problems. Check the soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. If the soil feels dry, it’s time to water

So sorry to hear. Did you wash the seeds to get off all the "sweet white fleshy part" (00:37)? You might have to check the seeds often and change paper towels if you start to see mold growth. Another idea is to clean the seeds with a weak bleach solution of about 10% bleach to 90% water beforehand. I also had good success just planting them directly in soil! If you have more seeds I hope you can try again.

I don't know about that. However, if you are growing them for commercial purposes air layering is the preferred method to ensure the correct ratio of males to females. And to make sure that you get a tree that is a 100% duplicate of the parent plant.
