This is the first year I’ve grown squash vertical. I love it. I’m in north Georgia so we fight squash bugs and the infamous Squash vine borer. Growing vertically allows me to see the damage and kill the borers before they kill my squash. Thanks for all your information.

Use peppermint Castile soap + water to spray trimmings and damaged leaves/vine the smell attracts bugs. Use Nylons around stems and use Earthworm castings around base of squash.

The peppermint scent seems to work. I placed mint plants in containers around my squash last year and I noticed less squash bugs. I also realized planting new seeds is easier than fighting Bugs/disease to keep a compromised plant going.

Great tips as always. New gardeners might be scared to cut off too many leaves, but squash plants grow very quickly and will have new leaves within a few days after pruning. It's always important to remove diseased or over crowded leaves.

First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was so informative and helpful. I also want to say that after watching this video, I got home from work and I got into working trimming my zucchinis and squash. I found a lot of diseases in it. I removed those leaves even though now it's a little thin now, I know that I'm going to get more vegetables out of my healthy plant.

Thanks for the tips. I just planted 2 golden squash and growing them vertically with the tomato cage. I will make sure and bottom prune like you advised below the fruit whenever it fruits (hopefully). Powdery mildew is attacking every cucumber plant that I've put in and stressing me. I used organic sprays on them but it still keeps showing up. Between that and only getting male flowers, I've just about given up on them this season. Sigh! Keep up the good work Calikim and Cameraguy!😊 fellow Socal Zone 9b girl.

I planted 3 Bush Baby Zucchini plants in a kiddie pool, put 5 stakes in a teepee to plant Blue Lake Pole Beans outside of them. By doing this I accidentally trellised my squash inside the teepee. I also transplanted Romain Lettuce in the front of the planters when I thinned a bed, and again accidentally gave the lettuce some good protection from the sun. 😊

I've used the vertical method for a couple of years now, and have pruned aggressively but our humidity in Houston is relentless and powdery mildew is a constant battle. I have found some success with spraying plants with a milk/water mixture on all the leaves on a weekly basis, which I'm told will help keep the powdery mildew away. So far for my cucumbers it appears to be helping some this year. But for my squash, with removing all lower leaves and those at first sign of powdery mildew is a constant and losing battle for me. I've just about given up on growing any vine type vegetables because of the high humidity in Houston, but I'm giving it one last attempt this year using the milk/water spraying on leaves and aggressively pruning to remove lower leaves and improve airflow. Absolutely LOVE your video's, thanks for doing these and keep up the great work!

Hi Jeff, ugh - the struggle is real. PM sure can be a constant battle in high humidity climates! It's not a question of if, but of when, even here in our dry So Cal climate. Way to go staying on top of it, don't give up, look for PM resistant varieties. Thanks for your kind words, means the world to CG and I! Have a great weekend!

I’m glad to hear your cukes are working out! I’m having success by choosing disease resistant varieties because despite my dryer climate I too lose a lot of plants to disease. Just wanted to pass along that green finger cukes (it’s a bush variety) has done really well in my container garden this year. Maybe also consider that variety for next year?

I'm doing this method with stakes. Zuke plant started out good, but it has really petered out lately, Nothing but a few male flowers, and leaves not really doing much either. It is regularly fertilized and watered. I may just have to accept the fact that Zukes and cukes are cursed for me. Tomatoes and peppers are kicking ass though.

I grew zucchini first time this year. There were male flowers but the female flowers never opened so I could hand pollinate. I tried the vertical way, the leaves had fungus so I cut them off. I ended up with a long stem with leaves on top, but the stem was very week. Now I pulled the plant. After all that work I had no zucchini. I wonder why the female flowers never opened up.

I admit, the easier things to grow (zukes, cukes and squash) I am TERRIBLE at growing. It’s the damndest thing. I think it’s because it’s so vulnerable to disease. The only thing I’ve successfully grown is green finger cuke because it’s so disease resistant - and even then I only get a handful. 😔
