That is a beautiful tree. The trunk has so much character. In the blink of an eye, it went from shrub to a beautiful bonsai again, amazing.

Thanks for showing us how to get a nicer gnarly looking trunk in a relatively short time. It looks great, not at all like it's been chopped. The flowing design is lovely too. You're a good teacher! 🙂

Beautiful tree!- I like the big base of the Nabari very wide, beefy, & gnarly defined turns of a semi wind swap style 😊

Another good video on shaping and design. I envy your space to grow and thicken the trunks. I really like what you’ve done with this Zelkova. Looking forward to followup videos on this tree. Keep them coming my friend.

Do you need to let it grow tall and wild to grow the trunk fast or should you cut it back once per year/every two years?
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 21 күн бұрын
It is a matter of compromise. A very big straight trunk with no taper looks weird…Thus I suggested cut back once a year or so and create a new apex…and repeat a year later. You can introduce turns too.

Mr. Chang, can you get the same result by planting in a large cement mixing tub? Steve.

Indiana, USA here. Drought took my curly leaf willow starts out. I managed to root 3 small starts and have them in the house. Should I keep them in the house through this winter? I want to make a 3 trunk Bonsai out of them. Thank you for your videos ❣️
@bonsaiheirloom

Probably a good idea to keep them in the house to keep them from freezing over. Less light is OK since willow trees are dormant in the winter time.

Thank you. I have learned much from your videos. I am in planting zone 7. Looks like you must be in 8 or 9. So my maple may be at risk if I do this kind of work now in middle Tennessee?

When you want to do anything drastic to the branches or roots, always play safe when leaves have dropped in the winter months.

Nice tree. Any thoughts on cutting that thick branch off and regrowing the branches? That branch seems too thick in relation to the others.

Is there a way to encourage a tree to form the breakage you have on the trunk of this one? My childhood home had a large oak tree that looked a lot like that and I would like to simulate that tree.
