My first wisteria was in a training pot for a few years at my grandmas house while I did my time with the Navy. When I got back I found that granny had planted it by the shed. ❤. Lots of air layering from that plant. She didn't understand what I was doing at that time. She loved her garden and didn't want it to die. Miss her still. Love your channel.

Thanks. You are fortunate to have access to such old and developed in-ground material. Agree that you don't necessarily need to know the wisteria variety you have, but they do perform differently. I have the American W. frutescens and a Japanese W. planted at the base of a utility pole with basketball goal. The frutescens is shorter and is just now opening very short blooms (not really spikes) with foliage; the Japanese grows to the top of the pole and will bloom later without foliage. My Chinese W. was planted at the corner of my porch in 2012 and bloomed very early but lightly for the first time this year. The foliage quickly grew lush. I think the foliage is beautiful--do you think a W. bonsai can be handsome, even after the bloom period?

My response disappeared. I hope this is not a duplication. I personally think the time to display wisteria starts when flower bud starting to emerge. Summer is a big lump of leaf with long vine shoots. Maybe of interest to some., ii prefer to put it away to let it grow wildly to gain strength and grow bigger trunk. Rather than worrying about origin, focus on the name variety with flowers you like. My preference is deep purple, pink, AND white (the most!)

Not easy...keep it moist. Easiest by pushing a long branch into soil with a little break.

Along with my mimosa, I have a wisteria growing alongside my driveway that I’ve been slowly shaping. Mostly trimming the branches to exactly border the of line of where the branches are out of the way of where I park.

Hi Milton, thank you for another inspiring and informative video. I like that you share some of the origin, history and your connection to the plant. It gives the whole thing a nice, personal touch.

Great video!! You are so appreciated. My current wisteria was a volunteer just a few years ago and it had reached the power lines already. My goal is to turn it into a bonsai. For now, about 2 months ago I cut it back to about 7ft and left in ground because I wanted to be sure it survived. From what ive been seeing they seem extremely resilient. I was going to dig up and put in large pot next February while dormant. Do you recommend later?? Thank you so much!!!🙏

thanks for sharing your experience. I perwonally don't think wisteria looks great in the summer months because it is covered with foliage and long vines...and I don;'t want to cut them because I want the tree to gain strength and gain truck size. After many years of pruning and cutback to maintain shape, branching make shorter growth...and thus closer clusters when blooming...That is the time to enjoy. Make sense? But you may find a big green growth in itsel beautiful display.

Wiring is useful...sparingly and remove quickly. Finding shortcuts makes bonsai fun, and it is in keeping with our busy lifestyle.

amazing wisteria milton! im literally the same age as it lol. you've just planted a seed in my mind about what i can do to my two wisteria in thr future. I have a pair of 2 year old chinese wistera (one bright pink one bright blue) in pots that im soon going to bury in the garden this summer, and now im thinking about keeping them in pots forever and trying your clip and grow method. then i'll have a bunch of softwood cuttings to try to grow and put in ground instead! thanks for the upload

Wisteria are easy to root. Some 25 years ago i took a cutting of one and planted it in the ground. i always kept it pruned back and eventually the trunk was large and the wisteria looked like a shrub or bush. When it bloomed it was beautiful. Now after 30 years in its spot, this video makes me want to prune it down and turn it into a bonsai.

I've been watching every single video on his channel and I highly recommend subscribing to him! The way he talks and describes his ideas for each bonsai tree are always so calming and really fits the image of his company, "Bonsai Heirloom". I'm currently getting into the art of bonsai trees and his videos are the only videos I could really understand and even picture out the shape of each tree. I just absolutely love his work, his channel, and him. ❤ Thank you for your continuous hard work Mr. Chang! I will always look forward for your next videos!!!
