SOIL TESTS:
The best way to get a soil analysis is to check your local master gardener extension or local universities. A quick Google search for "soil test in (my state)" should help you find a nearby testing laboratory.

Getting a soil test done four years ago is the best gardening decision I ever made. After relocating to another state, I assumed that dirt was dirt and failed to understand why many of my vegetables weren't growing well -- or at all. I expected that additions of fertilizer would resolve my problems but it did not. I finally went to the County Extension office and got soil test kits for three garden areas on our two acres. The cost was $7 per sample (plus shipping) at the time but the results were so worth it. The pH of the three areas I had tested ranged from 4.6 to 5.4 -- too acidic for most vegetables. (Note: Peas won't grow at a pH of 4.6...) Additionally, plants can't take up fertilizer if the soil isn't in pH balance so adding more fertilizer by itself is a complete waste of money. Also, I found that my soil was "very high" in phosphorus, so adding any fertilizer containing phosphorus was also wasteful. I now use balanced, organic fertilizers when starting my seedlings, but focus on nitrogen-potassium supplemental fertilizers once my transplants are growing in the garden. BTW, I spent the money for soil samples the next two years just to ensure that my soil pH was stabilizing. I skipped doing samples this year but will do so again next year. The extra 20 bucks to ship dirt (of all things) is an annoyance, but I have to admit that the results I'm seeing after I added all the missing potash that my soil needed made it feel worth it.

Doing well, thanks! For hydroponic plants, you'll want to use a liquid nutrient that is intended for growth in water and can feed the plants instantly. We have had good results with "SuperThrive" 9-3-6 for our various houseplants that are in water. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/dp/B003SUT6VS

Is it useful to sample the native unamended soil that you find a few inches down, or the soil you've amended in your beds, or both?
