I am not able to container grow on my balcony this year at all and I enjoyed it so much last year. They decided to tear our balconies down and won't be replaced in time for this year. Last year I grew tomatoes, radishes, bok choy and chives and had many bok choy and radish top leaf salad using all the other stuff with a tomato sandwich. I had loads of tomato left over so I vacuumed sealed and froze them to use during the winter. I was going to try to add some peppers this year so I am very envious of anyone that can grow something this year. Good luck everyone

Half our garden is pickle 🪣 buckets! This year we have corn, potatoes, bush and pole beans, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, onions, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, radishes, beets, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, sugar baby mellons, sugar pie pumpkins and strawberries. It's 2 earth gardens, a strawberry earth garden, 6 raised beds, and 20 five gallon pickle buckets. And there will be a lot of canning done.

We live in Southwestern Idaho near Boise which is zone 5/6. We live on five acres and have been growing most of our vegetables for almost 30 years. So far we have planted tomatoes, pumpkins, cantaloupe, cucumbers, watermelon, butternut squash, green peppers, potatoes, green beans, corn, onions, lettuce, broccoli and radishes. I can and freeze most of the vegetables that we eat all winter. It is a real money saver. I was a very small child in world war 2 and my parents had a huge Victory Garden as well as chickens for meat and eggs and they raised a pig for meat as well since meat was rationed. Sugar was rationed also and since they had fruit trees as well as berry bushes my mom saved her sugar ration stamps all winter so she could buy enough sugar to can the fruit and make jams and jellies. I'm 82 years old now and learned all of my gardening and canning skills from my parents many years ago but I still can our vegetables and make jams and jellies and can peaches and applesauce from our fruit trees. I'm very glad to see people today starting to garden again. It's not only a healthy outdoor activity but saves a lot of money.

Ray and I garden a LOT, mostly in the ground, but just wanted to add a comment to others . . . never give up on future gardening possibilities. Ray and I just got together 10 years ago and started gardening as a joint activity. We had both gardened some over the years with previous spouses not really being into it and helping much. We also both were raised on small homesteads with large gardens. So we had a little basic knowledge of that. But since being together (he in his late 60's and retired, me in my late 50's then and still working, but retired now) we decided to try growing herbs, which we neither one had any experience, knowledge, or even any contact with growing. It took a lot of trial and error, but we now are SO surprised at how EASY and INEXPENSIVE they are to grow and dry!! 👏👏👏 We live in central IL and grow the typical veggies here. But we were a little skeptical at our age to attempt asparagus, berries and grapes. We weren't sure if we would actually be able to harvest enough to make it worth our while since we're up in age. Well, we planted asparagus 8 years ago and it is so prolific that we have more than recouped the money we spent on 5 plants at Aldi. We also bought 5 thornless blackberry starts the next year at Aldi. We have SO many berries we have to give them away to family and friends, on top of freezing and making jam. And we give jam away to family and friends at Christmas. We planted strawberries the next year, but didn't find them at Aldi, so we bought them from a mail order catalog. Production is the same as blackberries. And both of those berry patches reproduce SO prolifically that we have to prune them back and have given starts of both to many neighbors, friends, and family. Three years ago I saw grape vine starts at Aldi, so of course I brought home 5 plants (cause it seems to be our magic number!) and they're doing fantastic! Last year the birds got most of them, but we're going to cover them with netting this year to combat that! And all the plants we have bought at Aldi have been $5-6 each!! 👏🤩 Sorry for the lengthy post, but just had to (hopefully) help other viewers of yours be motivated to not be pessimistic about the future and just try one or two things at a time. And like you say in this video, if you can't grow in the ground, grow in containers. And to remember: ANYTHING you grow and harvest is MORE than you would have had, and tastes better and is MUCH MUCH more healthy. LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos and your and Paul's helpful, optimistic advice. You explain and show what you guys do in such down-to-earth family-style conversation. Your recipes and how you switch out ingredients gives the best cooking advice ever. Paul has no need to feel shy of the camera, he is a mentor for young and old. Keep up the great work Paul! 👏🤩 And Dixie's such a joy! Glad to see more of Lori's as well. Like others here in the comments say, watching you guys is like visiting treasured friends!! 👏🥰💖

A note for those without yards, Celery, romaine lettuce & green onions can be re-grown in a container of water. I'm in Arizona and almost everything grows well here. Citrus fruit and melons grow well only in the southern part of the state. Too cold to grew them in the northern part of the state where there are 4 seasons. I skipped having a garden this year but I do have apple and pear trees. I'll resume my garden next year. I have container grown corn before. It is so rewarding to harvest your own garden.

I used to have a whole garden in pots...tomatoes, green beans , courgettes, potatoes, mange-tout, aubergines, strawberries...But I find it is a lot of work for little results...and the hundreds of ants in the pots were driving me crazy... This year I only have 3 tomatoe plants, strawberry plants (I keep them from one year to the next), raspberry and blueberry plants. My daughter loves to just pick one (tomatoe or strawberry) whenever she wants one (..and that is the very reason I planted them in the first place). The rest is only flowers....

Container gardening is the way to go, especially as we get older. I don't have a lot of space to garden anymore, but there's always room for a bucket of tomatoes. I add herbs wherever I can in my small area. The price of spices and herbs have really been climbing the last years. I dry enough to last me all year plus extra to use as gifts for friends and family. It's also been proven that working with plants is a healthy habit in so many ways.

I was blessed to have my hands in the soil from a very young age, in my mother's hidden behind the garage vegetable garden in the suburbs, as well as my grandparents 1 acre vegetable garden in Northern Michigan amongst the wildlife on 30 rural acres. From the time we rented our first place, back in 1984, I have had vegetable plants outside of my door. My rule was not to waste my little patch of earth with things that you couldn't eat. With each new residence my garden grew in size. In 1993 it hit 1/4 acre. Now retired and empty nesters, you would think it would be small. But oh no, I have a 40x50 foot area, and another 28×20 area and we added another 18x40 to it early this year. I now can so much more than I ever had time to before we retired. We do a lot of trying new recipes for canning in small batches, so if it's not our favorite, then it's gone soon. I only grow what we will eat, and I rotate which vegetables that I plant larger quantities of, based on my remaining canning items. We retired to the same property that my grandparents had, so we are rural and everything is further to drive to, and the selection is not great at times, and you are paying more for organic food, if you can find it. I always grow tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, green beans, sugar snap peas. I don't always have great success with beets, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and spinach, but I keep trying. So far this year things are, knock on wood, going better with those. I always grow cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, acorn ,butternut, crookneck squash, they do great for me, despite the annoying challenges of squash bugs. My growing season doesn't let me get cantaloupe or watermelon to full size, so I don't waste space on them. A farm down the road, 5 miles away, but that's a neighbor here, grows the best sweet corn, strawberries and asparagus, so we support them by getting it from them. I learned a great lesson from my mom years ago, that we may not be able to grow it all, but we can preserve fresh food for our families, by shopping at farmer's markets and then canning or freezing them. Be sure to research the best way to preserve the item, so you have no waste. I learned from an aunt that you can drop a whole cabbage head in the freezer for storage. Then thaw on a plate, or in a bowl in the refrigerator overnight and it is set to make cabbage rolls, no steaming of the leaves required, and no nutrients lost. So if at the end of season you get a great deal at a farmers market on cabbages, it is an easy way to store, for stuffed cabbages.

What a GREAT tip on the cabbage! Thanks so very much Elizabeth for sharing!

Just about everything grows well in the Ozarks and we start seeds indoors in December in order to extend the growing season. In ground, in pots, and indoors. We come from a long line of farmers who depended on food gardens to eat. Basil, tomatoes, zucchini, squash, peppers, beans, sweet peas, okra, sunflowers, corn, pumpkin, watermelon, cantelope, potatoes, garlic, parsley, cilantro, onions, leeks, shallots, ginger, lemongrass, sunchokes, mint, herbal teas, catnip, stevia, celery, carrots, radishes, turnips, beets, collards, cabbage, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kale. Only we just had a monsoon and the plants in the ground are now rowing to the Mississippi. But they should do ok. The weeds loved it. My garden sign says "Garden of Weedin". Had to cover up some tender container plants with sheets because it will go into the low forties overnight. That protects them from cold damage. And I searched the web to learn why recipes were called a smash, with no luck. Maybe it's a mashup with soft vegetables. It would be interesting to know.

Dixie and her zoomies had me laughing so hard . Your video was great !!!! We do the same type of gardening here in the FL Panhandle one 8b. I have almost 9.5 acres. 2 acres are wild blackberries. I'm 60 & had a career in Horticulture. I challenged myself to think outside the box for some containers. Having a mini-farm we had 30 gallon tree containers with holes. Perfect for potatoes. Old cloth shopping bags became potato grow bags as well. Then I just lifted them into large cardboard boxes near the compost pile. A discarded laundry sink that was going to the trash now became my sweet potato container. Growing sunflowers for my chickens. As I watched your video , I bagged & tagged 1st harvest of 2 lbs of green beans for the freezer. 4 lbs of strawberries in the freezer. Cherry tomatoes have been enjoyed for about 2 weeks. At 60 , it takes longer , but I keep plugging along. When I do purchase any starter plants , I always look for the double tomato or pepper in the pots. It's a frugal thing . LOL. Thank you for a new recipe to try !!!

Loved this garden video and the recipe to use some of the fruit of your labors. My herb garden has sage, lavender, cilantro, parsley, celery, dill, thyme, oregano, mint, stevia, lemon balm, feverfew, ginger & bunching onions. The garden has potatoes 🥔 , tomatoes 🍅 , zucchini, pumpkins 🎃 , melons 🍉 , asparagus, kale, corn 🌽 , beans 🫘, lettuce 🥬 , radishes, beets, broccoli 🥦 , cabbage, pak choy, carrots 🥕, cucumbers 🥒 strawberries 🍓, garlic, peppers 🫑 & snow peas. Some of those cool weather crops are at the end and I’m letting them go to seed. I’ve saved a few seeds before, but this year I’m really focusing on learning to save more. Also have marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, petunias, & pansies. Last year we had a horrible time in our garden with gophers/moles/voles. This year my husband has really worked on that problem and I’m doing much more containers. Some of it doesn’t produce as much as I like, but I keep trying and learning. Isn’t that what gardening is all about? We have a very small lot but I’m trying to use every available space to grow something. We have very hard clay soil and I work hard to add leaves & compost to improve it. Some of my plants are covered with netting to keep critters out. Just a few days ago something ripped apart the netting to get a juicy strawberry, grr 😠😂 It seems like the more I grow, the more wild life comes and visits us. A few days ago my granddaughter shouted that a fox 🦊 was running through our garden. It’s a lot of work, but the reward of serving my family straight from the garden is such a blessing.

Dixie Belle wants to play!!! Loris, not so much, lol. We use garden soil and bags of compost from Lowes and dirt from our ground for our containers. This year we're doing tomatoes, sweet peppers, Romaine lettuce and green onions. I thought those would save us the most money. It's been about 6 weeks on the lettuce and onions and they look great and maybe 4 weeks for the tomatoes and peppers and they look good so far, too! I've been very successful with cucumbers from seed but not so much tomatoes, so we get tomato plants. But I did start the lettuce from seed. You asked the question what grows fast in your area. First thing that came to mind was the word "weeds"! I live in Florida but I'm from the New York City suburbs, and I'm used to growing vegetables and plants from April to October. Down here in Florida that doesn't work. And for many years I would be very frustrated trying to grow many vegetables and not be successful. The corn on the cob would get eaten by fire ants, and due to the heat, the vegetables would wither. Here in Florida we have to grow in the winter. Once I found that out I became more successful. I have grown watermelon, zucchini, corn on the cob ( it would still get eaten by the fire ants no matter what I did) so I stopped growing that but I love corn on the cob. I've done green beans, peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes. It is so rewarding.

That is so wonderful you succeeded by trial and error! Good for you! Yes, those fire ants are NASTY!

Always tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow and green beans, red onions, sweet peppers, lettuce, carrots, radishes, zucchini, lots of potatoes (in pails) , lots of basil, chives, oregano and thyme and new this year asparagus! We also started raspberry and blueberry bushes and one new apple tree. We already have pear trees. Can't wait to see how everything does this year. Tomatoes, potatoes, beans and cucumbers do well for us here. Ontario, Canada. Actually pretty much everything we plant does. I don't have a lot of luck with turnips, beets or cabbages. Hi from the UK Emmy and Paul. Love you’re videos. Very informative, positive and encouraging. We have cats and am always amazed how they look on any other species as much more inferior to them…😃 here in the east of the UK we are into late spring. Normally I grow my tomatoes from seed but they failed so I have popped plants into the greenhouse. My new potatoes are growing well in the ground and we should be harvesting those at the beginning of July, delicious. I have Runner Beans in the ground now, sown from seed inside. I have just sown French beans direct into our soil this weekend and carrots have been direct sown in the ground for a few weeks now. We are having a few cold days so it may slow some things down. I will probably sow some lettuce in trays soon and no doubt share them with the birds😆 I love the taste of fresh home grown veggies, you can’t beat it. Take care🙏😻❤️

I try to grow the vegetables that are expensive to buy. Like Romaine lettuce, herbs (dille!!), any green leafies. My local supermarket has very limited green leafy vegetables and I get tired of just spinach, arrugola and butter lettuce. So I love to grow beet greens, kale, etc. Home-grown carrots taste so much better than the supermarket ones. Pumpkins are usually quite expensive, so I'm trying to grow them again this year. Didn't have much luck last year, so we'll see. And tomatoes, which I'm not really a fan of, but, oh well. I also have some edible weeds, like stinging nettles, and some others I don't know the English names of. They are very nutritious and grow completely free anyway. I planted a blackberry and two blueberries and my strawberries are ripening nicely. So hoping for plenty of berries this year.

(I commented before hearing the QOTD).... Yes, I LOVE gardening! We started gardening in raised beds in 2012 or -13.... and we were hooked! We kept adding raised beds each year until a couple of years ago we bought land adjoining ours and now we have a big in-ground garden plus a few raised beds. We live in the Appalachian Mts of WV (border of zones 5b/6a). We grow sweet corn, potatoes, green beans, Cranberry/Black/Kidney/Great Northern beans, summer squash, winter squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, slicing/storing onions, green/spring onions, beets, carrots, brassicas (cabbage/kale/Brussels sprouts/broccoli), popcorn, peppers (sweet and hot varieties), lettuces and greens....plus culinary and medicinal herbs (I'm an herbalist). We also grow flowers like zinnias, calendula, marigolds, sunflowers, etc. We preserve foods by canning, freezing, dehydrating, and fermenting. I dry herbs and make tinctures from both dried and fresh plants. We save seed where we can. We use no chemicals on our garden, but we do plow and use weed fabric. We have one small homemade polytunnel and one large homemade polytunnel. This year we're experimenting with growing sweet potatoes. I am also taking part in a watermelon growing challenge. A side note: We keep hens for eggs and we raise chicken and turkey on pasture (Salatin style tractors) for our freezer. I make medicines for our family and address most of our health concerns at home. I use time in our garden to "ground" (or "earth")~~I go barefoot in and around our garden so that I'm in contact with the earth. I feel this helps keep me healthy in various ways. (ion exchange and mineral uptake) I expose my skin to the sun (being careful not to sunburn if I can help it...), breathe the fresh air, enjoy the sights and sounds, and use my time working on our homestead for exercise. It's a good life...and the fresh produce is a bonus! Boy, those garden goodies taste great in January, too! God bless!

I'm growing tomatoes, cukes, zuchinni, squash, stringbeans, carrots, jalapeno peppers, okra, basil, rosemary, and trying brussel sprouts (may be too late for those here). I also planted a couple of celery stalks I rooted to see what they would do. I started my tomato plants from seed using a clear plastic container as a greenhouse. Turned it upside down, drilled some holes in it, put the potted seeds under it, and sat it by a window. Worked great. I bought a squash plant that actually had 4 plants in the container. I carefully split them up and 3 plants survived. I learned in NC appalachian mountains small gardens were also called patch gardens 😊 I'm in coastal NC, but mine is a patch garden😊

We're in Northwest suburban Chicago and have been growing container tomatoes, bell peppers, and herbs, but we’re simplifying this year and are planning to just stick with herbs. Although, once we get those in the planters, I’m going to advocate for one tomato, one pepper, and I’d also like a zucchini (which we’ve never grown before). But they would all have to be in large pots, which we have, and would have to fit on our patio wall so they are waist height and easy to manage for watering, since neither of us is getting any younger!

Thank you for all your tipps, dear Paul! And Emmy, your victory meal looks fantastic! Yes, we have a garden behind our house and this year we doubled our vegetable bed, we have some fruit trees ( cherry, apple, quince, plum) also one raised bed and lots of little container everywhere in our garden. Here in the north of Germany lots of cabbages grow very good. Gardening is one of my hobby, and at this times, where prices running so high, I think it is important to grow some food. In my garden you can find nearly every vegetable you can grow here in our area. But we have one problem: Slugs! Naked slugs. I go every night before we go to bed in the garden to grab the slugs from my salads. But beside this our harvest is always good. To grow tomatoes are a big love of me. We built the old glasshouse of my in laws after their death in our garden. And now it is full of tomatoes, pepper, chili, basil, parsley and little cabbage. These veggie are a very good mix culture. If you need some seeds from good old tomato varieties, I would love to send you some😊 for the next year😊.

We have quite a deer problem, so gardening is difficult to say the least. I grow herbs, which, save for parsley, the critters generally leave alone. This year I have basil, parsley, tarragon, sage, rosemary, thyme and oregano. Sadly, the dill did not survive. I am trying cherry tomatoes in containers. Fingers crossed, but so far, so good! I am also having some success with things in the onion family, so scallions and chives are doing well. I also grow spearmint, pineapple mint and lemon balm -- again because the creatures don't like the smell, but something is eating the lemon balm for the first time this year. The mint helps deter their presence and I allow it to grow throughout the retaining wall bed I use behind the house even though mint is a bear to control. I love the recipe you showed and you are so right -- there are endless possibilities with it. I was selecting my herbs to use as you went along! I use all the herbs I grow! I find it so funny that folks grow herbs and then don't use them!

In the past I've had large garden beds, the largest ones being at our last house 17'x40' and 45'x23'. We moved last year to Florida with only 1/4 acre lot and I just wasn't sure what I could do on such a small lot. Instead of going into the ground (excluding raspberry and blackberry bushes) we built garden beds, in addition to those we are also using grow bags and extra containers I have received free from neighbors. I was surprised at how much space I really have. I have planted watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, okra, jalapenos, poblano peppers, sweet potatoes, Yukon gold potatoes, raspberry bushes, blackberry bushes, blueberry bushes, rainbow carrots, fresh herbs and four different types of tomatoes. Our open air compost is actually growing one of the largest squash plants I have ever seen, along with sunflowers, which just make the garden area pop. We have also added in a Meyer lemon tree and a tangerine tree. While gardening has always been therapeutic for me, I am finding it to be very essential this year especially with the grocery prices on the rise. I am already making plans for the other side of the house to remove the bushes and turn the area into another garden bed. It is such a joy to watch the plants grow and produce something you can enjoy. Thanks for the video!
