WOW, so much garlic!! I just ordered some to try as I have never done it before! For labeling I bought white plastic nursery markers I bought the taller ones I think 6 or 8 inches. I attach the markers higher so it is easier for me to see, if it is on the ground they are hard to find as everything gets taller and they get buried!! On the cattle panel arch I stick on on the post facing the variety and in ground I like using one of the metal straight electric fencing poles and I attach it at the top. This also makes it easier for me to make notes on my garden testing chart (I got the idea from The Seasonal Homestead). I put it into a spreadsheet for myself and hang it on a clipboard in the kitchen so I can mark how much the produce weighs (I am not great at this) but at least if I can mark that we got 10 squashes it helps to know how much we got, if we like the variety, if it did well for us and want to grow it again or not! The clipboard helped a lot as I can take it out to the garden if I want too! Next year, I want to add my garden plan on there too so I can plan things better but we will see I am trying to start a garden journal so I don't forget the varieties of fruit trees/bushes I already have planted.

I have grown stiff neck garlic for 5 years in Iowa. The cool thing about growing garlic is how hands off it is. And we use the plants from that year for the next year. We grow 96 heads of garlic. Each heads produces 5-6 cloves. So we set aside 18 plants to plant in the fall that will grow till next summer. We started this process from one bulb we bought in Galena IL. That year we grew 6, then 12, then 24, then 48, then 96 plants. It’s amazing how so much can come from so little. We find 70 or so bulbs gets us through the year and I thought I used a lot of garlic. I don’t know how you can use 578 plants! But I’m looking forward to seeing it.

We have been growing our own garlic since 2000. I bought 1 pound of garlic from a young man at the International Plowing Match (for $1.00) that year in Elora, Ontario, Canada. He taught me the fundamentals of growing and have been growing it ever since. We usually grow about 50 plants which is enough for us and family members. We use our own heads to plant the next year's crop in October which we cover with a very thick layer of straw to protect it during our long, cold winters here in midwestern Ontario,, Canada.

For your hardneck garlic, they grow garlic scapes up the center of the stalk that I think produce cloves if you do not prune them off. I live in a village in rural Croatia and we grow a lot of our own food. The soil here is naturally extremely fertile and the season long and fairly perfect for agriculture so most people grow their own vegetables, roots, fruits and berries et cetera and this is our habit too, but I don't seem able to grow garlic and I love garlic! I need to learn a bit more. I planted garlic cloves in the autumn and in the summer they all are one, onion-shaped clove. I left them in the ground. We'll see how they develop (if they do). The flavor was generic. Then I started buying seed garlic online and that was so much larger than store bought. The resulting garlic bulbs from seed garlic cloves were so much larger as well. I am currently making black garlic in my rice cooker. This is my 2nd attempt. A few years back I didn’t have a rice cooker with a gasket lid so it didn’t turn black. It didn’t go to waste as it was still good in soups and roasts. Unfortunately my garlic grew too fast in the fall due to a longer warm winter and I had to buy garlic this year to make it. Fingers crossed it works this year. You have so much garlic that I hope you look this up and try to do it.

@@AcreHomestead most people wrap them in tinfoil which I’m not fond of, so I wrapped mine in moistened cheese cloth. Seems to be working fine.

Wonderful 🧄 !! You did great girl. You can get one of the clothes line for Amazon the ones that when you are not using retract and it’s just a small box a set it up on that back porch to hang it to cure. Or do some garlic braids which works great for curing and for storage too.

I love to mince the garlic and fry it until brown with light olive oil....garlic oil to put in noodles...also fried with Thai chilies to spice it up.

I'm growing garlic around my rosebush just to fight against aphids and to help my roses smell even better. Getting garlic out of it is a big bonus!

When I was young me and my best friend would go out in a huge wild field behind our houses and pull up and eat the wild garlic raw... My mom hated it when I came home from playing bc we would both stink like crazy!! We also had a wild pear tree behind our house and would eat the hard little pears.

My grandmother could smell me eating garlic days before I ever went to her house I couldn't understand it. She was like I swear you smell like garlic. And I would say Mimi, you realize I'm Italian and it's in my blood... 🖖😏🤔🤣

I planted garlic in January-very late I know)I'm in Ireland zone 8 and when they were really brown in June I pulled one - so disappointed as looked like a spring onion - left and pulled in August and they had developed into cloves. Just today I was digging and found a few more bulbs (tops were gone) and they're perfect 😊 going to plant loads of organic ones in november

We need to leave our garlic 10 months here. I plant in early November and harvest them in July. After the scapes grow, we cut them off and stop watering them.

Awesome harvest! I have heard from other gardeners though that you shouldn't pull the stalks from the ground, they should be dug up. The reason being that you can dislodge the paper husk from the bulb and shorten the lifespan of your bulbs. Idk if that is an issue with yours, but if it is then you know why.

Becky , did you know that you can even preserve some of your garlic in oil. Peel all the garlic and put all of it in a food processer to smash it then put it in clean jar and fyll the jar with the oil you use the most. the put it in the refrigerator. it last like six months. when ever you want fresh garlic tack out a scoop of it in your food. I have done it. very easy. I thought I have to share it with you.
