For restoration of ecological balance, we need to grow back the green cover that we have depleted from Earth so rapidly. This video shows how to create urban forests in the form of dense plantations. They can be created in any setting, but are especially useful for urban settings where the depletion of green cover has been exceptionally severe.
The method used here to grow back the green cover uses the same the principles as the Miyawaki method - named after the famous Japanese botanist who encouraged recreating forests using native species of trees.
This video captures the 2 year progress of the Urban Forest from planting the saplings onward. It is important to point out that since this project was done at an existing park site where non-native trees already existed, the method is not a pure Miyawaki method, however similar techniques are applied. Given an empty patch of land, one can choose a mix of only native trees and create a dense forest using purely the Miyawaki technique.
An important step as part of this method is to mulch (cover the soil with fallen leaves/tree debris) to help the soil retain moisture and to let the nutrients fall back into the soil. While this step was carried out, since the park is in the public space, with external factors beyond direct control, at times the mulching got removed.
We are an environmental NGO that does tree plantation work and all other things sustainability related across India, including Delhi, Gurugram (Gurgaon), and Noida.

Was so grieved when you said you were going for native trees, fruit bearing and medicinal trees. All those that are worth your efforts to grow, are more likely to succeed and which have positive end products.... Wishing you lots of luck. You can learn a lot about your soil by simply digging it ready for new plants.. If you grew a similar strip of trees down the centre of the lawn you would have 3 lines of trees and the temperature of the area would drop significantly. Fabulous work.

Somehow someone is still sweeping all those precious leaves that fall away and taking away the only way this has to renew the soil

this is what i was looking for. most people who would love do miyawaki may not have huge pieces of lands to do this on. this video shows how to transform little pieces of land around your house. this has potential to be a silent revolution for a greener India. great video.

Thanks Akash. You are spot-on, with rapid urbanization the no. 1 challenge is to find land to reforest on. Collectively, we must literally try and grow back the green cover on every square meter that we can reclaim. It's possible if there's enough awareness and passion behind it.
