I'm in the N.W. corner of Oregon...it does freeze here some snow. I had a 1 ft. Banana tree gift that got too big for sun room in 3 years...it went outside when it warmed up....1 st winter it was 8 ft. by the end of summer. For the winter I compleatly wrapped it in an old wool blanket and plastic around it to the ground. Next spring it came right back made 5 pups...last winter I didn't wrap it at all...it was fine bloomed and made tiny bananas....this winter I may wrap my little grove all up. Just feel it could be a cold one here following my insticts. Love this in the yard huge now 12 ft. Tall.

That's so cool! Don't you just love the vigor and hardiness of the bananas? You're in zone 8? There are tons of bananas you can grow there! Lucky!

Great to read your comment, I'm just above you in lower mainland b.c, got a tiny new dwarf in a 4 inch, I'm keeping it inside this year then see what happens, I'd love to have my own banana to eat one day

@@erlindajohnson3011 I collect the leaves that fall on my driveway and pile them to partly compost...then about November I shovel some on bananas... usually fall just before frost.to protect the base I stack them loosely around bases about 8 to 10 inches deep. I also cut off the banana leaves as the cold comes and stack them around trunks... By spring I can move them off as it warms up....the leaves then decompose there.

Great information! Thanks! I started growing 3 banana plants in April 2022. All is going well. Average temperature 77° all the time. Use GE dehumidifier and MedifyAir purification system. Two humidifiers for the prayer plants. I appreciate that this video is intended for outdoor banana coming in for the winter. I am very happy with the amazing growth on all three plants. I am in western Kentucky and usually unpot all of my banana trees but its to much and to hard with all the roots . Would your method work for mine ? What about the babys should I at least dig them up ? Thanks for your help

Is your banana plant pot-bound purposely , or will you be repotting come next season? Can you start new plants from those sprouts? The corm gets pretty big like the colocasias.

Yeah I figured I'd just wait to repot it since I'm going to put it into dormancy in a few weeks. Oh yeah, if I had let the offsets maybe double in size then I could have unpotted the plant and divided them up.

I ordered a musa dwarf banana plant on Amazon and I live in Massachusetts and planned on growing it in my house 90% of the time, but if I wanted to bring it outdoors I could. Hence I bought a smaller version for this reason. After 3 months of me having my plant I noticed it soesnt look like the banana plant in the pics on the site and other customers. I am almost positive the sent me a snow banana tree which grows up to 17 ft!!! Its growing extremely fast. 5 months ago when I got it the plant was 4- 6 inches, now its approx 18 inches. I have an amazing grow lamp I bought on amazon that I've used on this all along since day 1 and I literally leave it on 24/7. It's never damag÷d the plant and the plant looks beautiful and pretty healthy. I've attempted to take it outside for natural sunlight and summer heat, and within min the leaves started to brown. Maybe next spring I'll plant it out in the shadier part of my yard so the sun wont destroy it

You know, I usually keep my house around 75 if I can. I have a fainting disorder, and one of the weird side effects is not being able to temperature regulate. Bad for heating bills... But hey the tropical plants love it! Def do not have the lighting for a banana inside tho

My banana is growing in a pot at home at a south facing window. Lowest temp right now it's around 65. Highest around 75 ish. It's actively adding leaves, but it's not growing tall. Do you know why is that?

Hello! Sometimes they will keep their foliage closer together when there are changes in light, temperatures and/or nutrients. Often times they will have the leaves spaced further apart on the pseudostem until they reach a certain height where they are getting more light and then keep them closer together.

This video was very helpful, thank you! I am overwintering my bananas and alocasia in the living room this winter. The bananas because they are still young yet. Like you said, when I dug them up and put them in pots, they threw a fit and all the leaves are drooping and dying. Too close and personal with the roots, so just cut off most of the leaves and hope they perk up soon. My problem is when I store in the basement eventually... I am trying to get the temps below 65 degrees in the winter. This is hard, but going to see what I can do.

🤣😂 oh I would be miserable! I'm weird (no news there) and I like a chill in the house and lots of heat outdoors. Mostly just like a slight chill in the air for sleeping though. No that's actually the leaves, aren't they massive! I just repotted that thing in February I think and already am going to have to pot it into something bigger.

What zone are you in? I just put enough mulch over them to make sure there is about 6 to 10 inches surrounding the pseudostems. Oh, and I normally cut my pseudostems to about 18 to 24 inches tall. It takes a lot of mulch to try and keep that much trunk alive. I have let them die to the ground before and just tossed a few bags over their clump.

I just dug up 3 Musa Bajoos today and they are a bit big. I am going to have to keep them in the house as houseplants so it will be a battle with the spider mites all winter long. I hate spider mites.

You never know, I don't always have spider mites on my bananas, but seems frequent if the air is especially dry.

Tropical Plant Party they have been a pain to keep off my Alocasias. My husbands aunt sent me kaolin clay powder and she says she sprays it on her plants to keep the bugs off. I am going to give it a try.

Hey shawn! I use a starter fertilizer and amend the soil with that plus some humus in the spring. In summer I use a homemade fertilizer using beer, epsom salt, seaweed fertilizer and a tiny amount of ammonia.
