In this video we'll be following the journey of a young walnut tree. I collected black walnuts locally and documented my attempt to grow them. We'll be following these seeds through the germination process and monitoring our young walnut tree through its first growing season.
I'd love to hear from you all what you think of my tree and anything I can do to grow walnut trees successfully! I hope we can use the comment section below and together build a resource that helps people grow more trees.

I just planted over a hundred seeds outside. Living in Tennessee we do not get too much snow. I have put the containers very close where I picked them up off the ground from a couple really large walnut trees. They are also going to be protected from the scorching sun in the summer. My theory is I will get a few to grow. We have a very large yard to permanently plant walnut trees so my hopes are high.

My son and his daddy found a walnut with a little sprout coming out in our garden (from our neighbors tree). Threw it in some soil and oh my gosh it is growing so fast! Withing 2 weeks it's gone from the tiniest little piece sticking out to a little over a foot tall. It's growing so quickly!

Really cool to see - for a change - an attempt that ultimately didn't turn out as hoped for. Glad you uploaded this, despite the final result. Appreciate it.

Jimmy, last fall I picked up a bunch of black walnuts from under my tree. I threw the seeds, hucks and all, into a bucket and leaves from the tree fell in the bucket and covered the seeds. I just noticed I have about 20 little saplings. I literally did nothing to encourage these nuts to grow saplings. I gathered the nuts so they would not hurt my mower and not for the purpose of saplings. This is the second year I have had this happen. Next week I am going to transplant the seedlings and see what happens. The mother tree came from some black walnuts I just threw on the ground about 15 years ago. I live in S.E. Oklahoma. Zone 7B.

I grabbed about fifty black walnut seeds from my neighbor's tree and did the thing of sticking them in a bucket of water and knocking off the husks with a paddle bit on a drill. Four of the seeds floated whereas most of them sunk. I took the four seeds, stuck them in a bag with some potting soil and stuck them in the fridge for four months starting in November. When I took them out there was no sign of growth on any of them. Disappointed, I decided to throw them all in the ground together anyway. To my surprise, about a month later, they all sprouted. So I dug them up and relocated each one of them. They're all growing at different rates in their respective locations but they all look pretty healthy. I guess this is their second summer coming up if I'm not mistaken. The tallest one is maybe sixteen inches at this point. Now I'm trying to figure out how and when to prune them. Pretty fun to see them growing like that.

Very cool. I have a Black Walnut tree in my backyard in the middle of Chicago lol. I thought it was cool when I learned that Black Walnut is native to US and has a different taste to regular walnuts. My dad always makes brownies with the regular nuts so Ill try the ones from my backyard. I want to try to grow one aswell, especially since I heard there's some sort of blight or beetle killing these trees. I hope the tree doesn't go extinct. Sadly my yard is too small to even find a spot to grow one of these. Also I thought it was funny how after all these years of those annoying balls landing in the yard, I had no idea they were edible nuts inside.

That tree still could have made it, if you would have just not torn it out if the ground, trees are amazing creatures they will find a way, if it’s got ANY GREEN on it anywhere it will still make it, it might be next year but it will make it

You couldn't pull it because it was still alive. If you give a plant a gentle tug and it's not coming out of the soil -- leave it, as it very well may grow back in spring. I probably would not have cut the stem (it was still very much alive). But, it can still come back if you still have it. Young trees go into dormancy early if they have any stressors. It's preserving itself basically.

Just a thought - not that this will help with the walnuts themselves, but you mentioned how tiny the spruce were by comparison. I’d always heard that black walnuts leach something into the soil which inhibits growth of other plants. So if you were hoping to get anything out of the spruce, they probably shouldn’t have been in the same pot.

Good thought! That chemical is 'juglone'.. I've seen some stuff online saying its harmful and that is the common knowledge, but I've also seen some stuff saying it is a myth. Not sure what to believe!

@@JimmyBHarvests sounds like the answer is to plant some spruce trees without the black walnut and see if they grow any faster😁

Jugalone inhibits the growth of some plants - including some garden plants (tomatoes, for example), while other plants are not affected.

Squirrels plant these all over our property. The seedling trees grow extremely fast and are often impossible to pull out and I have to cut them. I’ve never known how black walnut looked like until this video. They stink so badly. Not sure if I want to keep any, but I admit the 100 year old tree your grandfather has is magnificent. Thank you for sharing this negative experience - will know hydrogen peroxide is not safe at all.

You asked for tips. Although this is obvious, I will share. You could not pull the tree out of the bucket. You should have dumped the bucket of dirt. It would have been nice to see the tap root and it the bucket was too shallow.

Super appreciated!! We've gone from doing everything on an iphone to now borrowing my wife's mic 😂😂 I deleted all cannabis related content recently so that youtube would remonetize my account. Unfortunately not all plants are allowed here. The propagation race you are referencing had little differences between the number of leaves. Transparent jar worked best, as do cuttings from closer to the initial/primary stem of the plant. Beyond that, i would reco clonex and some aeration as a best in class way to do it. Aeration example with peppers here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3K9hq2dhrKXla8

There was nothing wrong with that plant It had only closed for the winter and had surely sprouted in the spring. i have given away plants that have been thrown away in the fall because they have said that the plant has died when it has lost its leaves and that has not been true. there was nothing wrong with the stem on your pkanta and in the first year they may lose their leaves early.❤
