There is really nothing that rivals the fragrance of citrus blossoms. The tiny trees they sell in garden centers are so tempting because of it. But in this area, it is a lot of work to bring them inside for the Winter. It really has to be a labor of love.

I used Neem oil in a spray bottle for leaves, and I make my own Colloidal Silver Water for pennies on a dollar. I spray some of both a couple of times per month. This keeps fungus , mold and Nematodes at bay. Insects or worms leaf miner are killed with the Neem oil spray. It's a great preventative , instead of waiting until you see something , THEN trying to get rid of the pesty bug or mold or fungus.

I have 8 citrus, different kinds, in pots and for about 3 years had a major infestation of mealy bugs. What a pain. I found the only way to control them was to take a bucket of soapy water, put a sock over my hand, and wash as many leaves on each tree as I could. I finally got rid of them, but ended up losing the one that brought the bugs in to begin with. Good info, though, and in line with what I've experienced so far. I live in Georgia, so your recommendations for water, light and temps are spot on. This is my first time watching one of your videos - looking forward to viewing others.

Give a little tug and it should release from the tree. Enjoy! Nothing like a Meyer Lemon.

Oh my word! This makes me so happy. I've been devouring "all" the potted citrus"videos and web pages I can get my hands on lately... and then my favourite garden vlogger comes out with a video days later! :-D :-D My many poor potted citrus have had a hard life 6 years of moving around rental houses waiting for me to move into one of my own in order to plant them. This year they've got lots of deficiencies, because I've been too busy renovating and having surgeries - and this past Summer (it is Winter now) and all my fruit trees were hit with so many the boring and sap sucking bugs... possums and wallabies too. :-( They're very unhappy plants. Anyway, my story aside: YAY! a Garden Answer video! :-D :-D Thank you guys!

blarghies Greetings from California - having “problems with wallabies” caught my eye as one of the cutest phrases ever, but then, I am not familiar with what actual damage they may do! Wishing you and your citrus trees the very best.
@blarghies5 жыл бұрын
@@OxfordComma47 hehehe! They are wonderful creatures. I absolutely love having macropods on my property. :) wallabies, padamelons, (bettongs), potoroos and possums (different to yours) are like deer, where I live. They will eat every plant they can get their tiny grabby hands on. I'm trying in vein to grow two purple flowering hebes as lollipops and a hedge of variegated pittosporum as a hedge, but they keep getting stripped... The bark is scraped off or stripped, branches broken or rendered useless causingdie back, and the leaves are all gone. :( I used to think olive trees, lavenders and citrus were not eaten by possums (cute little banes of my existence), but they have been eating everything. Sighhhh. People in my area shoot or run over native and escaped animals (Australians aren't great people as a whole) and I refuse to harm them no matter what. I just wish there was something I could spray on the plants that would work! I have electronic animal repellers (emit sounds and leaving lights that they don't like) but they don't seem to help. And brush tail possums will climb over any any fences or through tiny gaps like Toombs from the X Files and wallabies will bound over our cattle fencing. Can't keep them out. 😭😂 Making things grow here is like banging your head on a brick wall. Add to that my destructive geese, ducks, chooks and goat and I realise it is a labour of love with a large helping of frustration and pushing a bike up a steep hill. 😂 :) I ❤️animals and plants.

@@blarghies Hi there - loved your comment!! I’m not an Aussie but I’ve vacationed there and have friends there!! They built a ‘sun porch’ on the north side of their house - floor to ceiling windows, half of them open, glass ceiling/roof. Or maybe high impact plastic. They put their garden in there. It’s like a lean-to added to the side of the existing room. Now the windows on that side of the house open into the sunroom - concrete unfinished floor. It’s like putting windows around a side porch. Anyway - lush garden they have!! They have lemon trees and those Aussie limes. Beautiful! And bearing fruit. One is getting so big they’re going to have to do something with it - prune or move somewhere else. And shelving covered with veggies in pots and wooden beds. Maybe you could do that at your place? Good luck with the animals!

Branka Zorić, FERTILIZE!! I recall a great garden advisor radio show years ago saying, fertilize more often than the label recommends, with a lesser amount of fertilzer or weaker dilution rate. Object being a constant availability of nutrients. That was using straight old-school kind of fertilizer; today's more likely are Organic, time-release stuff that may make this unnecessary. But still, fertilzer should make a difference. Pruning is probably just as important, and after pinching, the fertilizer will cause faster growth, allowing you to control the basic shape of the tree. 🍋🍊🍋🍊🍋🍊🍋

Marian Kay, if you plant one (potted citrus)) you will not regret it! If you happen to get fruit you can give it away🍋🍋🍋(i recommend lemon; Meyer or Dwarf Eureka, but i guess it depends on your climate etc-- they require plenty of sun/heat) The citrus blossom fragrance is divine! If you enjoy morning coffee in the sunshine on your deck or patio, and the potted lemon is blooming nearby, you will not want to move 😄. If you don't sit outdoors in the morning, having the potted lemon near an open window is second best. I know what you mean though, about watching the Garden Answer videos. They've got ten times the space as me (at least!) but watching her landscaping decisions and planting ideas can be mesmerizing. Hence no planting chores getting done at MY house!

Thanks you for this video very helpful. I have a Meyer lemon tree also. I learned a lot more on the care. Watch your videos all the time. Love 💐 like you and plants. I have to stop myself from going anywhere that has plants, because I end up bringing home more plants.

Great & useful information! I never thought of growing a citrus tree in a container! I also love the terra cotta pots, I have inherited my Grandmothers pots & I use them in memory!🌞🌿🍋🍊🍈🌿👍

Great video! And perfect timing because I’m about to repot my 3’ tall fig tree! On the citrus fertilizer, I’ve got Jobe’s not-time-released Organics Granular Garden Fertilizer for fruit and citrus, but have been reluctant to use it because some say it stinks horribly (contains chicken manure) and doesn’t dissipate. I’ve had my Soltec Aspect canister light for years and really love it. The only issue is it’s not very powerful unless it’s very close to the plants. Fortunately, I just received my new grow light shelving system from Amazon so hope to achieve better results soon!

Meyer Lemon can survive frosts with no problem, and I have left them out to 26 degree faranheit with no issues. I left it out to 21 degrees and it dropped some leafs and was stressed, but bounced back. In fact, leaving it outside during freezes really helps deal with the mites and other pests that can be an issue when raising citrus indoors.

In what size of pot do you have your lemon in and what growing medium did you use?
@essaboselin52525 жыл бұрын
Great video! Two things I've found out in my years of growing them: In some parts of the country, it's hard to find citrus fertilizer. If you use another fertilizer, be sure to add some blood meal as well. Citrus have very high nitrogen requirements compared to other fruit trees. Also, don't be surprised if some of your young fruits fall off. Citrus are self-thinning, and will only keep the amount of fruit it can support.

Essa Boselin thanks for the info! My Key lime tree keeps losing it’s young fruits but it is also in the same pot as a Meyer lemon tree (purchased them that way this spring from a big box store). I’m thinking I should separate them into their own pot.
@essaboselin52525 жыл бұрын
Oh, I would definitely try to separate them. My Meyer lemon is much more vigorous than my lime - it's probably taking most of the nutrients.

Essa Boselin thanks so much. I’m going to try it.

I bought some citrus tone last summer and it’s best to keep the plant outside for a while because it stinks!

This is super helpful! I want to buy a lemon tree for my apartment to keep in the balcony but I was wondering about pruning, mites, and sufficient sun exposure. This clarified a lot.

I’m growing Cumquats. It’s Winter’s end late August in Oz. Repotted from plastic-2-terra cotta on saucer. Mixed in a little Citrus slow release bead fertiliser .. maybe not enough so will sprinkle more 2morro with follow up watering. Thx 4 tips on transitioning .. was wondering about that. I guess “follow the (sun-) light” is the mantra🌞. I’m gonna feature the orange Cumquats🍊, yellow Lemon🍋 & pink Frangipani🌸 eventually out front the cottage .. am just over the dunes 2 the beach .. The Beach Boys wafting thru the house .. that’s the idea @ least🤞🤞🤞

I have a greenhouse and wants to grow a dwarf meyer lemon in a large container. The greenhouse, right now, in zone 7b, has gotten to 32* and the heater in early morning warms it up until the sun is out. Should i use row cover at night around the tree as an extra protection until heater and sun out in winter?

Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been trying to grow a lemon and lime inside for a year and they have produced. I’m struggling with pruning them so that they form into a tree shape. Please oh please do a video on pruning citrus!!!! 🙏
@joannecarroll55044 жыл бұрын
According to my books, citrus don't really like being pruned. The books say only to remove the essential 3Ds (dead, diseased & dying branches) & any branch that starts to grow below the graft. Shame I didn't read before I cut. lol.

How is your tree doing now? Any advice after a year has gone by?
@nashnash79973 жыл бұрын
I'll try it. My uncle has a lemon tree and sends us lemons every year. One was as big as my moms head it was huge. His lemons are so good too.

Would you winterise the lemon tree in the cold frame?
@ShadowNight-kt3dz5 жыл бұрын
Richard Meakin it would depend how cold it got. Meyers lemons are hardy to around 20 degrees F in the ground. I would say 25 F in a pot.

I have a lime tree in a terracotta pot (for making cosmopolitan cocktails)😎 where I live the plant was getting sunburned so I had to move it to a place that had afternoon shade. When I transplanted it I made a pyramid out of the soil then opened up the roots and then draped the roots over the pyramid and then back filled it .this makes it really stable in the pot ..thanks for your vid... I've learnt some more🇦🇺 By
