Great video! I "obtained" a few cotton seeds recently, and I have always wanted to try and grow some. I think it is a valuable tool in showing kids where so much we use of this plant, comes from. My mother used to tell us about many tales of her growing up years, which was done with picking cotton, digging peanuts, digging sweet potatoes, and whatever you had to do, to earn money during the Great Depression. Thank you for sharing this, and the link of where it is illegal. I haven't checked it, but I am pretty sure my state is on the no-no list. Ssshhhhhhh....

So cool. Although I didnt know it can prick your hands by pulling it off. I feel for my ancestors. That must of been hell for them. I'd like to see a video of the spinning of the cotton and the whole process. Too bad my generation never learned this stuff from our ancestors. It would be cool to pass down some useful knowledge to make this generation more self sufficient.

There are dozens of videos on spinning cotton and also weaving it. Try using a supported spindle, basically just a stick and a weight. It doesn't take much cotton to make a little bracelet. It can be dyed with plants. Brown is the easiest color to dye cotton with. You just need some tannin-bearing plants like Eucalyptus leaves. Many videos on KZbin about that. If youre going to grow it, you have a choice to grow green and brown cotton also. There are many sites on the internet that sell cotton seeds in these colors.

Loved the video. went to your site and you showed the seeds there. They look like Pima Cotton seeds. Your description of how hard they were to get out also gives a clue. Pima is harder to deseed. A cool way to deseed cotton is with a small hand crank pasta machine and a piece of denim or other grabby solid fabric. Now you need to look into getting a Charka to spin the cotton. That is really fun. And look into natural colored cottons also.

This is for Georgia : Before you plant the cotton seed you must have permission to grow it. The staff of the Plant Protection Division in the Georgia Department of Agriculture says that they only grant permission to educational or historical organizations. Only rarely would they give it to individual homeowners. Their reasoning is that uncontrolled cotton gardening could lead to an outbreak of the cotton boll weevil.

Its Gossypium hirsutum, native to Mexico. Named hirsutum from hirsute meaning hairy and that is referring to the seed. It's the reason the gin was invented. 5% of the cotton grown around the world is hirsutum. Another species of cotton native to the New World is Gossypium barbadense native to Peru originally. It was found in Barbados (hence the name) by an Englishman, who named it. This cotton is much easier to gin. You might want to try to grow some of this. At least it will be easier to gin. By the way, the boll weevil has been eradicated in all states except Texas so most states have eased up restrictions growing it. You can check with the state farm programs in your state.

Thank you. I got a late start on my indoor growing but it's happening. For mushrooms I was sent 4 different varieties as plug spawn from somebody who picked them up at a garden show. They were sample packs and I'm working on getting them to spread and produce. I'm working on one grand project that will take a while but it's all I think about lately. You should see that late February time permitting. As for editing video, that's half of the fun.

I see that too, no growing in FL. It was on the outside of someone's fenced in yard at a corner street. Not sure if someone planted it or if it pops up every year. I don't know much about a cotton plant. Not sure if it is like most bushes that continually grow year after year.

Did you hear why? We have bollweevils in CA and they don't want them to spread to farms. Cotton is a cash crop in CA. This is the same reason there are agriculture checkpoints when you drive into the state. CA is the largest agricultural state in the nation with upwards of 40 billion dollars in crops each year. Kind of a big deal to keep it safe.
