How to use Bananas: 1. Fruit - I guess Mark has covered this already. 2. Bark / stem - Very nutritious, especially the bottom tender part of the; can be used in soups, a lot of South Indian cuisines. Once the tree had produced the crop, cut it and strip out the other layers and use the white part 3. Leaves - Use as a plate for eating, or a wrap for frying / steaming (very versatile). Next time when you have a party, skip the use-and-throw paper plates and serve on banana leaves; it is a custom in South India. 4. Flowers are also a delicacy 5. Raw (un-ripened) bananas can be used as a vegetable. Banana is one of the special tree that is an absolute 100% usable.

My wife lives in the Philippines. She says it is bad luck to plant bananas in the front yard. I found out why. My very first banana tree I put it by the front door because I did not have time to plan it. So that’s where it grew and grew and grew. I watched it closely and saw it put fruit on and I was so excited. I was told to let the fruit ripen on the tree and it would taste better. As the cluster of bananas grew I watch them closely every day to check and see if they were turning yellow. My anticipation every day was great. I had to leave for a weekend and to my great surprise when I came home somebody stole my cluster of bananas. I could not believe it! I had watched and watched all that time all that anticipation and somebody came to my front door and cut down my banana Cluster. I now know why it is bad luck to plant bananas in the front yard! :-)

GREEN BANANAS!!! Yes green bananas are delicious too. I'm from Puerto Rico and green bananas are part of our "almost"daily diet. Two main dishes made with green bananas; Guineos en Escabeche (pickled bananas), boil the green bananas with or without the skin in water with a dash of salt (add a little milk (1tsp) to clear that black stain from the skin) for 15 min and set aside. Saute in one cup of olive oil, onions, garlic, peppercorn, spanish olives (without the seed), a couple of bay leafs and when onions are done add a 1/4 cup of white vinegar and salt to taste. Then mix with the green bananas (diced in 1" pieces) and fridge for at least one hour. Serve as a side dish with any kind of meat or fish. Sancocho (Puerto Rican beef/chicken stew) - "will give you so much energy when feeling sick". Many different root vegetables such as taro, potatoes, yucca, sweet potatoes, green bananas and green plantain and many other vegetables like corn, carrots, squash (calabaza) and the least goes on. Add beef (cut in cubes), or chicken or both...why not? Be creative and add some chorizo or ham (fresh deer meat or rabbit sure it's for you so please yourself). Boil all ingredients with sofrito and other Caribbean condiments until vegetables are tender and eat alone like a soup or with some white rice on the side. D_E_L_I_C_I_O_U_S!!!! Dear Mark in India we keep the ripened bananas on their stalk once we separate the stalk from the tree. The stalk keeps the bananas fresher than the once separated from the tiny bent stalk. The stalk also holds the flower at the end. Hope this helps. You can also tie the stalk to the ceiling using a long rope which keeps them away from pests and ants.

Here's another tip, from personal experience: if you only allow each original plant to have 3-4 shoots/suckers at once (mature, baby, intermediate), the plant will produce more and perhaps faster. We cut all the extra suckers and feed them to our goats. Or mulch. Also, cutting off the flower once all the fruit sets is practiced much here in Ecuador as farmers believe more energy is dedicated to the fruit itself that way, which is also the reason for maintaining only 3-4 shoots at a time. When using this system, 1-2 of our shoots have fruit on them at all times, though I imagine it is much warmer here as well. And wheelbarrows full of goat manure surely help.

I usually freeze my bananas in bags 3 to 4 at a time and use later for banana nut bread. They make for great sweet gifts or Holliday cheer. I also use over-ripe bananas to sprout seeds or throw them under my fruit trees for added potassium nutrient. Thank you for the informative videos🥰

As an Indian who has banana plants in the garden, I can attest that ripening the bananas on the plant itself will make it far thicker and more tastier than when taking it out when its still green. Btw the bananas you're growing is one of the tastiest and fattest variety which needs very rich soil and resources.

MY "OLD" Banana! Top "Secret" Being Older now. I am willing to give it up! CAKE Frosting! Blend a ripe Banana! Straine. You can not get all the little seed out. Banana Holds moisture, stops frosting cracks. Try a coconut cake. Then white frosting with Cream cheese and Banana. Then grade the fresh coconut and push into the frosted cake. Hi Mark, I use bananas if I am short on eggs in my baking, I also use them as an icecream base (vegan style) and as a thickener and sweetener in my smoothies, I caramelise them for over pancakes , puddings and ice creams. I try not to waste them. Luckily we all enjoy bananas. Another good video. Thanks. 👍🏼

Hi. Great videos. Here's another way of doing it if you'd like to experiment with. Soil Prep: 100g of CIRP or TSP 100g of Dolomite 100g of NPK 8-8-8 500g of chicken manure Month 1 to 5: 150g of granule fertilizer 15:15:15 Month 6: 100g of MOP fertilizer or when the last leaf before the flower comes out. and 150g of granule fertilizer 12:12:17:2. Month 7 till harvest: 150g of granule fertilizer 12:12:17:2. Apply fertilizer monthly for better result. For the suckers. 2 ways to go around it. First: Only keep 1 at 3 months old and another at 8 months old. Second: Only keep one once the flower comes out. Choose only sword suckers as this is the one with vigorous growth rate. As for leaves. Maintain 8 leaves while growing, 6 once the flower comes out and 4 once you cut the flower. Cut the flower around 2 inch after the last bunch. Just sharing. Happy gardening everyone.

Just make sure to plant your banana rhizome deep enough so that soil can keep covering it when it starts to grow with the plant, and that will help it to grow roots all around. The more roots, the more feeding it can get. That will also help the plant to be able to carry a huge load of bananas without bending or falling to the side due to the weight. Keep the soil moist, and that's all.

Thanks for the tips. Here, in Bay Area, I got my first harvest last year -- took me 4 years -- the plants hardly make it thru winter, but then I learned to wrap them up completely with Agribon cloth all of winter. Eating your food on a banana leaf is a special treat!

I saw you cutting them up for the dehydrator. Have you ever tried to dehydrate a whole banana? I leave mine for 24 hours in the highest setting and they come out really nice and chewy. They keep very well in the fridge that way due to the high sugar content. They're also very good chopped up in the morning cereal. Give it a try. I'm sure you'll like it. The only problem is eating 3 or 4 of them at a time because they're so good.

Hi Mark, love your channel! I live south of Chinchilla. I’ve got Java Blue bananas growing, watered by my grey water from kitchen. My bananas cope with temperatures of 0 in winter up to 40-45 Celsius . In the last three years I’ve had 3 bunches per year. Not bad for the extreme in temps and not much rain. Average 400-600 mls rain per year.

Another great video mate. We have 3 patches on our block. Planted in areas that used to be a bit boggy and they love it. No more boggy areas and the bananas go crazy. I am getting staggered growth now which is great. Haven't ever fed them, just mulched around the base and thinned them out regularly. Usually get about 100 bananas per tree. Will try the chook poo fertilizer and see what difference it makes. Keep up the good work mate.

I have never grown a Banana at home. I saw what they called Dwarf Bananas at a local nursery. My climate is quite good, and I do know how to grow them,,,covered this in ag college. I at some Bananas in outer island Sumatra many years back and they had seeds. I will never forget the flavour,,and spitting out what I think was seeds. They were like little ball bearings! Thanks so much for the video and inspiring me to consider growing these in my backyard. As I can remove the suckers it's okay for renting. hi, loved your comment was just about to add what you said about the banana seeds and saw what you said. my dad used to work in Jakarta, i came and stayed nearly a year. We used to go to punchak forget the spelling past Bandung and we used to buy a hand of banana's on the side of the road always on our way there and back and the banana's were at least a foot long and the seeds looked similar to peppercorns but maybe 3-5 times bigger. You don't find seeds in todays banana's.Guess they don't want people growing from seed another form of government control. I'm 63 now i was 12 then.

ived baked banana slices in the oven at 300 coated with peanut oil on both sides. Ive also uses a fruit dehydrator at 160F and they are still good but not as carmelized. The ones I have dried I have also blended up and used as a flour substitute. Banans for bananas. Thanks for the great video!

All tree ripened fruit is better. I thought the "picked green" commercial bananas tasted like bananas. My tree ripened bananas taste nothing like grocery store ones. SOOO MUCH BETTER!! I like to use bananas in all the ways you mentioned plus banana sandwiches and pancakes and splits without a dehydrator warm oven will dry them. Cutting into small pieces + freezing makes them great for fruit salads & fruit cocktails. Or even as "ice cubes" in drinks

Another great video! Are you sure the banana suckers you took are lady fingers? With that white haze around the skin of the fruit it really looks like a "silver apple" kind which is smaller but way tastier. Remember to keep those banana peels for compost it's a great way to get potassium into your soil. And consider using those trunks for two things, if you ever have a disease from bugs you can use the cut log to attract them near your banana trees for a more natural solution or consider growing mushrooms because the tree itself is fibrous and the risk of contamination is not has high, also water spray wash the banana fruits on the tree because they spew alot of impurities and if they stick to the banana fruit it will hinder their development and not grow perfect skin. thanks again

I finally got my first banana harvest and these were the biggest, fattest and sweetest bananas we've ever tasted! But this plant took about 2 years probably because I get limited direct sunlight in my backyard. I've a question: would it be better to replant the new suckers in different areas of the garden? So that they get individual shares of sunlight, compost and water?

My wife makes a pinneapple, banana and cinnamon crumble pie when we harvest our banana plants, it's delicious. A banana marmelade it's also a good idea to preserve lot's of fruit. I really enjoy your videos! Cheers from Cancun, Mexico

Our first dwarf banana tree has just gone to fruit. Really exciting to see the bananas emerge from the flower. Our neighbor has the exact same banana trees and his fruit always turn black at the ends and rot before ever becoming ripe. I've heard you should remove the flowers from the individual bananas to prevent this, but I can't find anywhere where it says WHEN to do this. Right now, ours look like proper little green bananas with really firm, fleshy flowers at their ends. Any advice on if/when to remove the flowers and how to prevent them from rotting before ripening?

"Come, mister tally man, tally me banana Daylight come and me wan' go home" this is great, perfect timing, we were working out where to put a small banana grove and how to keep it healthy. they need lots of nutrients. here its not uncommon to need to move them annually because of their nutrient demands. i like the idea of just composting directly into the center of the tree. makes good sense because they form rings of suckers orbiting around the mother tree, in the same manner that a redwood does. 1: toss in the compost. 2: cover in the trees own mulch. 3: let grow. 4: "A beautiful bunch o' ripe banana..., Daylight come and me wan' go home..." kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn7MmIukjbKbh5Y cheers from Kona :-D

Yes composting kitchen scraps works well. I did have some footage of me actually placing kitchen scraps in the middle of the banana plants but I could find it (I looked for an hour back through my footage) so I just had to try and explain the process - I suppose it's not that hard to imagine. A lot of people where I'm at plant them in a circle so they can just drop everything in the circle. Bananas love nitrogen. ...Urine has a lot of nitrogen. I'm just saying. (Don't pee directly on your plants because you might burn them). lol

love your videos Mark.I'm an Australian living 20 years now in Tunisia. Just bought a 7 foot high banana tree with 2 babies coming up.it's in a pot and i just added a comment that a gentleman also experienced in Indonesia banana's having what i call bigger version of peppercorn seeds.I'm now 63 and when i was 12 lived for a while in Jakarta and when we used to go up to my dads friends fabulous house in the mountains we always bought a huge sized hand of banana's,never seen banana's that big ever since but maybe only 3-4 seeds in a banana but huge also.Can banana's still be grown from seeds or aren't there any of those left in the modern world any more?Do y?our banana's make seeds inside the banana's

There are still plenty of bananas with seeds in them in Indonesia. I don't know if you can grow a new banana palm from them. No need though as the mother plant usually produces babies from it's rhizomes.
