Hi Tom. Re flowering pot tubers, they would flower if I allowed them to, but as you will see in my videos as the year progresses, I remove all flower buds so they redirect their attention to making tubers. If I took cuttings early enough they could be planted directly into the garden and they would flower. However, to do that I would need to take the cuttings in February and grow them in artificial heat and light. I haven’t got that in my greenhouse.

Hi Hali. Obviously I can’t say for sure what your problem is, but leaf problems are often caused by plants being too wet or too dry. Try checking the tuber underneath to see if it’s dry or, more likely, is rotting. Too much water before proper roots start to grow can cause rot. One final thing you could try on the ones with yellow leaves is to spray with a very dilute mixture of Epsom salts, because a magnesium deficiency can cause yellowing

Hi Estrella, no I don’t sell, but try looking for specialist nurseries such as Halls of Heddon in the UK. Good tall ones are Ryecroft Delight, Kenora Clyde, Joal Louisa. The height they grow is also dependent on the quality of the soil they grow in.

Johnny: If the leggy ones are quite tall I would be tempted to cut them back if you can. If you look at the base where they meet the crown you will probably see signs of secondary shoots. If so, you can cut the leggy stems off just above that point, then new shoots will grow. With a taller growing variety like Blackjack I would restrict the plant to a max of two stems. If you take them off right at the base they will probably root, and could be used as pot tubers. If not, just cut them back as best as you can. Try to make sure the remaining shoots are well apart.

Thanks so much for the swift and comprehensive reply, I’ll get to work! Very handy tip to leave remaining shoots well apart - that will influence which stems I take off. Keep those lovely videos coming with your cheeky smiles!

I love your garden, it is my favorite out of all the KZbin people I follow. It is my inspiration for my own due to similar size. Your instructional portion of the dahlia cuttings is so nice & clear! Thank you both for sharing your process in creating such a magnificent garden retreat!👏👍👍 Hello from New Jersey, USA 👋

I have been following your channel for 4 years now. I learned a lot from you. My dahlias are still indoors. I bought new tubers, I lost all mine in the shed. The moisture and extremely low temp killed them.

Hi Sarah. Check where the tubers meet the crown, you should be able to see small eyes if they are going to grow. Some varieties are very late.

Love the videos and the great information you give. Can I ask if you are doing a section on diseases please? We have planted a few tubers this year, 10 in total, and this is our first attempt at growing them, however unfortunately 3 of them are turning yellow on the leaves and some of them are starting to go brown on the ends and they dont look very healthy, have you any suggestions/ideas or help please?

Hi, thank you for having this channel and keeping it updated. My collection are more than 70 tubers plus some grown from seeds. But all mine seems to be the same high(90 cm) I would love to have some of the ones that grows higher like yours so I can put them on the back. Where can I buy those special ones? Do you sale some of yours?

I love your videos so much. May I ask a question? I see from this video that you take cuttings which you then keep in small pots to make potted tubers. But you say these cuttings never produce flowers, so they put all their energy into making a tuber. Why don't they flower? And if you planted out these little cuttings this year, would they flower, and would you not be left with a decent tuber by the end of the season?

Thanks Geoff and Heather! I started a few tubers indoors 2 weeks ago and they look leggy, not stout like the ones in your videos. When I plant them outside, can I bury the stem a little or should I keep at same soil level? Thank you!

You two are just lovely! I love watching your dahlia journey. It's my first year growing and I'm learning so much from you. Should I still cut the extra shoots off if I don't plan on doing pot tubers?

I just love your videos Heather and Geoff! Cynthia Houston has such large tubers!!! Geoff, do you pinch the cuttings you receive by post? How do you prepare them for planting out doors? I've ordered some cuttings for new varieties in the US and I'm already concerned about the best way to get them acclimated. Thanks!

First time grower. I have 7 tubers, all costing $10 and one, cafe au lait, costing $20. To make backups for insurance, I want to pot them now, take cuttings but only if there's more than one cutting coming up, and put that cutting into 4" pot to live as a pot tuber. The main tuber I then planted in the ground. Hopefully, the main tuber produces nice big plant and flowers and has a nice tuber at the end of season. That main tuber can be divided, etc. at appropriate time. Then I have the divided tubers, plus a pot tuber of that variety. And the pot tubers I never let flower? And don't fertilize much?

To Ashtanga Boy: that’s right, don’t let your pot tubers flower and don’t give them fertiliser, especially any containing nitrogen.
