Growing delicious Dexter beef is all about getting the details right. These include starting with the best breed genetics, ensuring they lead a low-stress life, paying close attention to their diet, providing proper mineral and protein supplements, and finding a butcher that knows how to best age & cut beef.

My Uncle(who is now a retired dairy farmer) never had Registered Holstiens but they were good blood lines, he raised most of his own from Calf on to use in his Dairy Herd, he had the highest Milk rating also for his Milk, he didnt pump his animals full of junk unlike the big farms

Yuck Aaric. I worked at a chicken farm in high school; big long dark barn with chicken pens stacked on top of each other and a manure pit below. It stank so bad it'd make me feel ill for days afterwards. It has to affect the flavor of the meat.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos and wanted to say thank you for the content. Seems like most people want to keep their successful ways a secret but you are helping others with your success and failure. We have a small 40 acre farm in north Florida and i want to do what you're doing so bad. It's just a huge leap of faith that we're nervousabout taking. Your videos inspire me and i am closer each day to making our dream a reality as well.

Hi big5434, thanks for your kind words. It is a huge leap to take. It took me quite a while (years) to decide it was worth the risk. Best of luck.

I really enjoy your videos Mr. Larsen. I appreciate all the hard work you put into your farm and how you share your experiences. I enjoy seeing your relationship and respect with the farm animals and how you convey the reality of where our food comes from. You also have a great personality and presentation on video which adds greatly to the value of the information you share with us. Keep up the great work dear sir and I look forward to your continued stream of excellent videos and information. All the best to you, your family, and your farm!

So I'm still in the planning and looking at property phases of my farm. But I was at a stock point when I was trying to figure out how to grass feed cattle on a size of acridge like you have. And this video definitely removed that stumbling block from me. Thank you for all the good information in this video as always Pete.

Pete great video. I wonder if you would ever be available for an on farm (homestead) consultancy session? I'm willing to pay the asking price. I live in Western Mass so not too far from you. I moved out from the city three years ago, and am really just winging it. I own four Dexters. I bought them last May from Wenslydale Farm in NY. All I am after is to grow good quality beef for my family and a small circle of friends who are interested. But I live on wooded/rocky acres (104 acres). I originally thought I was going to go with the silvopasture model, but now I see how important it is to grow my own hay. Basically, I am pouring money in but not sure if I am throwing good money after bad. I watch a lot of homesteading/farming on youtube and I find you to be the most informative in terms of actual business knowledge and in terms of the livestock I currently own (pigs, chickens, dexters). Thanks again for another highly informative video. Just wondering if maybe I could hire you to look at my property and tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree by trying to raise Dexters here. TIA

If you had the capacity to grow and harvest any corn do you think you’d give some to your dexters? I know I’ve seen in some later videos you were experimenting with it but I don’t think I ever caught the results

Hello I living in Serbia, we don't have Dexter here, and it's expensive for me to bay one. But we have Buša, similar sise than a Dexte, good for milk, but not very good for meat. What do you thin about mixing my girl with a Dexter pureblood? What can I expected? Thank you.

@@rachelnewton2522 I think silvopasture is a great idea. You'll need to make sure to protect the trees though, as the cattle will rub the bark off them and eat the lower hanging leaves.

another great informative video. Hope all is well with your family. As it seems like I've always have questions here goes. Still shopping for the right house and land combo. I ran across a farm/homestead for sale. The price for the house and land is comparable to others in the area. the owner is retiring for the cattle business and is selling it all as one package including equipment and live stock, it is right at 50ac there are 20 registered Black Angus cows that are supposed to be pregnant, The question is with me primarily a one man operation am I taking on too much with that # of cattle. I plan to eventually incorporate Dexters onto the farm. Do I try to sell off the cows immediately or grow them out again thanks for any information or in site
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacques, that is doable for one man, especially if you are buying in hay and not growing anything but pasture. Black Angus is a breed I believe doesn't grass finish especially well, unless the herd has been bred for specialized grass finishing genetics (they are out there). After raising angus for a few years you'll realize how smart Dexters are!

Just my Opinion but I tried Grass fed and I also tried grass fed grain finished and the grain finished tasted better but could have had different results with your beef. I do think the care taken makes all the difference.
