Ginger is an very important and interesting spice that you can grow in your garden. In today's video on ginger growing, we will see two techniques how to grow ginger and how growing ginger root can be very productive for your garden.
The Ginger plant is a perennial but is mostly grown as an annual. We look at some tips to grow ginger, can you grow ginger in containers.
Ginger plant can be planted in May and then it needs about 4 to 6 months to grow to about 4-5 feet in height after which you can harvest the ginger. In this video we also look at how a premature harvest of ginger looks like and ways you can avoid it. We also present to you the best tips for growing ginger.
Ginger root is easy to grow at home. Growing fresh ginger is probably the best thing you can do in your home garden. Although you can grow ginger indoors in bright light, I recommend you growing ginger outdoors in bright light. Since there are a lot of tips on how to grow ginger, we present a concise but efficient way of how to grow ginger root in your garden. Growing ginger in containers is easy but growing ginger at home in raised beds is even easier. We provide you the best tips for growing ginger in your garden.

I use store ginger that is dried, i left it in the plastic bag in the house for a month or so and all the pieces started to sprout. i broke the large root into 8 pieces and planted them in the garden, they all came up and are now getting big. i expect to harvest soon.

I leave mine grow through all summer and autumn then harvest in winter so about 5-6 months; however, you can harvest ginger early after 6-8 weeks (young ginger) is excellent and great for salads etc. The rhizome won't be as big but still worth it. Cheers :)

This is my first year growing ginger and my potted plant is about 3-1/2 feet tall. My second pot was planted later and I will move it into my greenhouse to see how it does as it is October in Connecticut. It's a learning experience for me with a new greenhouse but I'm hoping the ginger that I planted in August will produce some ginger. I'm very excited to be able to harvest the larger pot in a few weeks.

The video was good, but back at home we do grow it in a little different way. We select the piece of ginger of one and half inch with more than two "eyes", from which the shoot will grow. The more number of shoots means big yield. Average size of yield is more than half the size of your palm. We water it and let it grow till the leaves turns bit yellow and that's the signal the plant can't grow any more. Then we reduce watering drastically and let the plant die. And when you dig up later the ginger will be brown, big and little hard, and the taste also will be good than what you have shown in video. The shelf life of such ginger will be little long. I feel you have harvested it bit early. May be at your place it may be that way you people want it. We prefer little hard one than juicy piece of ginger. But loved your video. Thanks posting it. Keep doing it

Interesting, im in Florida and I always harvest mine when the leaves look ugly...then the ginger is brown like the store ones. But I wanted to harvest it younger so I can make pickled ginger so I will try and harvest it earlier. Thanks for your explanation.

He did say that. He said it's more flavorful and juicy and the hard brown ones you see at the store are harvested at that time specifically so they will stay preserved on the shelf

J. Lewis Great video here. I find that it is better to keep it frozen for use, rather than thawing it out... then it grates and slices quite easily! When it thaws it is bouncy and harder to work with. I just grate or slice off what I need and return the rest to the freezer.

I live in Minnesota which is a LOT colder so I grow my ginger and turmeric indoors. I started my ginger with a piece from the store. Last spring I divided it and now have four plants that are over 3 1/2 feet tall. The biggest of the turmeric is 3 feet tall and it has a number of babies between 2 feet and 5 inches tall. I used the first method. (The turmeric I ordered on line this spring because I live in the middle of nowhere and the store doesn't sell turmeric.) I'm sure they would prefer more sun but they are doing well in front of my south facing set of windows.

Would you be able create more videos regarding growing vegetables/salad greens/herbs, etc indoors? I did watch one that you had posted some time ago. I live in an apartment in NYC and don't have a patio or backyard unfortunately. However I am working around this issue as I have purchased an LED light and heating pad to create optimal conditions for growing vegetables indoors.

I only use fresh ginger root a couple times a month so after I harvest my ginger, I clean, dry and freeze in a mason jar in my freezer. I also make herb baskets for family. It’s all organic so they love it and always ask for more. Same with the basil pesto I make. I freeze my pesto in 1/4 pint mason jars as that’s the perfect amount for cooking or dipping. I so happy I found this channel as I’m in SoCal.

I just watched how a man, while it was snowing out, started his with a heat mat indoor. He said the tip is a constant 80 degrees due to being a tropical plant. He also when spouting had a dome cover for humanity. After it sprouted he panted eat one separately in small containers because each one might grow at different rates and in these small single containers he still had heat mat below and had the plants in trays with water. He said water below is best and a constant supply. As the man here on this video has drip irrigation. BEST Wishes.

Xlnt tips !!! I have a tip for you in return. The white stuff on your foliage is white powder mildew. You can spray it with organic alkaline water 9.5 ph. Spray it on at night, when you know it will be sunny the next day. Most of the time it goes away with a couple of applications. It's organic and won't harm your ginger.

Mine did well last year and disappeared in winter. I had the feeling I should open the ground and check on them. Thanks again.

This is very interesting. We live in cold country Canada and our growing season is very short. I will try to use a piece of brown skinned ginger (only ginger we can find here) to start in our bay window this weekend. We can never grow anything require warm temperatures for our overnight cold will kill them.

Did you grow your ginger indoors then? If so, when did you plant and harvest?

I live in Minnesota, so Canada is our next door neighbor. I posted a comment about it today. I also grow turmeric, both in pots indoors all year long. I'm planning to add a few more tropical spices since both the ginger and turmeric are doing fine. Probably not as productive but more than enough for me. I harvest when the parent plants start to brown.

Very thorough explanation. It's June the 28th. Is it a good time to plant ginger or do I have to wait for almost a year, to plant it in may 2019? I'll appreciate if you answer me please. Thank you

There are so many types of ginger. Would you mind telling us what type do you grow that is edible. Could you plant ginger from the grocery store? Thank you, Ginger from Florida

Yes you can plant grocery bought ginger. Most non organic ginger has growth inhibitors sprayed so they wont grow. Get organic ginger and start your own plants!

I've had some store ginger in a pot for almost six months and still no sprouts. But it doesn't seem to be rotting either, so I don't know what to do. It just sits there. Of course, it has been winter this whole time and my house is around 60F so maybe the low temperature is negatively affecting the result?
