Dang James, the footage in this video is so well done. The various camera angles, closeups, focus effects and pacing made it a joy to watch. And you seem to find the right background music. My gomphrena did so well this summer. Wish I planted more. Appreciate your encouragement with these beautiful flowers.

Anytime! I was thrilled to learn you were growing them. I love to hear how they do in different environments unlike my own, since most of these flowers are so dependent on region. Glad to hear they did well for you.

I love that vase that you made! I’m always looking for unique things to display my flowers in. I couldnt agree more about the enjoyment of growing flowers. It’s amazingly rewarding. This year I purchased some gomphrena seeds so it will be my first time trying them and I’m happy to see they seem to be a no fuss flower. To address your weed question, my mom who has been gardening for many years, she has 6 aches with acres of it as garden, and of course many weeds that want to be there, she is anti weed pulling for a few reasons- which I think is a commonly shared opinion in the garden world- she now smothers her weeds with wood chips that she gets for free from tree cutting companies, the wood chips overtime will break down and they are good for the soil. You may need to adjust (add) to bal Ph later. She also smothers with mushroom compost which where she lives is easy to find, not sure that it would be where you are but any soil works of course... and lastly she uses a flame throwing weed burner which I thought was silly at first but it really works! I do not have the land that she does but I do use the smothering method as much as I can. Hope that helps and thanks for the video, really enjoyed it! Lauren ☺️🌸🐱

Your seedlings quickly got much taller and generally bigger than mine, which have more of a rosette appearance at the moment. They are a "Fireworks" mix, but the white ones resemble yours a bit more. Although not as large. They've had a good start on the propagating bench and under some supplementary lighting. We'll see how they go once they go outside. Hopefully they'll do as well as yours. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video, you've convinced me to try growing gomphrena! To remove weeds, have you tried straw mulch? Here in Australia, we use sugar cane straw mulch around plants because it retains moisture longer and prevents immediate evaporation in the hot summer months and the weeds don't receive the sunlight they need to grow. I mulch around 5 - 10 cm thick and that seems to be a really effective weed control. Also straw mulch is organic matter that is very good for clay soils as it breaks down much quicker than bark or wood chips - making your soil more healthy for the next growing season.

@@Baetanical I have used shredded straws in my gardens for many years. It works great but it does contain a lot of seed from the field the straw is harvested from - so you end up with lots of grass (oats, wheat, or barley) sprouts. I am lucky that the quail and finches will eat a lot of the seed from the straw in my gardesn but I do end up having to pull sprouts on a regular basis. When I run out of the bales I have I am going to switch to alfalfa bales and shred them for mulch. No seeds, no worry about herbicides and additional nutritional benefits for the soil. I wish I could get sugarcane mulch in Nevada!!

@@Baetanical Nutsedge...ugh. I've found that if you catch them early- at about the stage they are in your video- they're easy to control by shoving a trowel deep into the soil next to the plant and lifting the plant and the roots out on the ground. If you let the plants get large enough to have extensive root systems with several tubers attached to them, they're much, much harder to control.

Something you could try with that clay soil is watering in with liquid hummates every month. It slowly seeps into the clay and helps amend it over time! I've seen some pretty good results in my own soil here in Houston.
