For the past five years, Juneau Greens has supplied fresh, hydroponically grown basil and lettuce to Juneau through a weekly subscription as well as wholesale. They have also expanded to Anchorage with Anchorage Greens. They use three tiers of vertical pallet racks and deep water culture. Juneau Greens strives to minimize single-use plastic use while providing a fresh healthy product directly to the community. He says one of the big challenges is that wholesale demand fluctuates dramatically. John says people considering this type of operation in Alaska should find their market first. They should also realize that growing indoors means you have plants growing 365 days a year which makes it hard to take even a day off.
