Going over some basic care guide info on growing hardy agaves! How to grow hardy agaves and other cactus in succulents in colder climates can be quite simple given a few basic principles are understood and met for the plants. Overwintering cactus, succulents and hardy agaves is fun, creative and easy! Some of my favorite low maintenance plants for the landscape! The whole video boils down to one main theme, keep them dry in winter! The agave in this video is Agave parryi 'truncata'

I have several of these growing here in my garden in Niagara Falls, Canada. I simply put a tall glass cover over them for the winter.

Great tip! Here the temps swing around a lot, can be single digits one day and 60F the next day. I would worry with the erratic temps that they would potentially cook under glass if I were to forget to remove it on the warm days.

I have them outside here on the Isle of Wight, which is off the south coast of England. I also have Agave multifilifera outside here. Most people on the island seem to prefer Agave americana though

Good information. Agave Victoria Regina is my favorite. so elegant. Bought a small Agave in 3 inch pot at Home Depot recently. Looks a lot like A. Victoria Regina with slightly thicker, stubby leaves and the same white leaf imprint lines. It offsets freely which none of my Victoria Regina plants have done. Would love to identify my newest Agave and research it's cold hardyness and mature size. Any ideas? Thanks.

Jealous of the folks that can give Agave the dry. I live at the edge of a rain forest. Would love to give it try again but no good sunny windows and too wet all year. I live vicariously through your tutorials. Lovely Agave.

Covers can help with excess moisture I have a few surviving zone 7 south New Jersey. Planted in almost pure rocks then sand underneath. South side by house warms up faster. Even one aloe survives lace aloe. I just plant the pups and offsets keep at least one of each in a pot Inside for insurance. Parrys Havarii new Mexico can survive the best and toughest one is the miniature century plant can take winter moisture a bit better. An overhang roof container box or something to shed winter moisture will help the most. Also try yuccas and Cactus if it's colder can take more cold and soil drains adequately they grow much easier

Love Agaves! Even though I live in the Northeast, they are in terra cotta pots and enjoy the summer outside.

Same here, they are so easy and low maintenance! I love how they simple to keep but add such a dramatic impact to the surroundings! What kinds do you have?

Thank you so much Jeff! This was of so much help. Maybe I'll just leave them in the pots. I hate it when I kill a plant. I have a few Yuccas mixed in the landscape but I'm not sure I like it. Sigh... I'll figure it out someday

I know what you mean! If I had a dry spot somewhere I would plant mine back outside, but just not worth the risk to me since they grow so slow and are harder to replace. :( I know what you mean with the yuccas, I have an odd love hate relationship with them. lol

HEEELPPP!!! My poor agave suddenly jumped 2 inches in 2 weeks and is yellowing faster at his base leaves! It's winter and I'd cut back on watering, what do I do??

Does it grow in part shade or full sun?

lol! They definitely do bite! There are some spineless varieties which are tropical and make nice houseplants, but i think even those have sharp tips on the ends of the leaves.
