G'Day Folks. Water chestnuts are really simple to grow in aquaponics. I was once again very happy with the harvest we got from the 3 corms that were originally planted out.
Hope you enjoy the video & your gardens are booming.
Cheers all. 🐟 🌱🍅

Simplest way to clean/skin them is to use a brand new scourer. The green rectangle ones are cheap & work well. Just rub the skin in an area to clear the majority of the larger areas, then use a pairing knife for the extra hard areas to reach. Much less fiddly, normally quicker & lose less flesh then cutting. After use, use the scourer for dishes after rinsing properly. Just use a NEW one the next time, to ensure food safety.

Never had any luck scrubbing with those scourers Eleni. It just takes the loose skin off so that's why I was just peeling them.

Nice harvest of water chestnuts! I should look around for some root bulbs to start some. Another thing that will try to overrun the greenhouse. I have thought about building a new one with some design ideas for warmth in winter & cooling for summer. Our drought has broken! 86 days dry. And many days a desiccating wind. The one wicking bed on the windward side has taken off. I started planting it in May but the plants refused to grow, above ground. All of May & early June, no new leaves, and a few shredded in the high dry winds. The wicking bed on the leeward side did better, but not great. Cooler weather, lower winds & rain, my tanks are topped off and windward plants have taken off! I’m fighting small white flies in the greenhouse with soap & neem oil, trying not to spray the media or water in the water trough (dwc, Xochimilco). I’ve cleaned off the plants of old dying and dead leaves, increasing air-flow, especially for the tomatoes. Got them growing in the root pouches sitting in flooding trays, in Xochi, & in clay media. I think they like their roots in dirt best. I might have too many strawberries in the flooding trays, the roots are clogging the permeability of the clay pebbles and have had to limit the water flow to a trickle and prop up the side opposite the drain to help compensate. I bet a bathtub would work better. Weeding out strawberry plants will be a final resort. I’ve got a kale tree which I should take out of the media bed. I’m sure the roots have created a good anoxic area and it’s flowering top has reached the top of the greenhouse. But it does provide some afternoon shade to some understory type plants. Its leaves are thick and chewy, but they stand up nicely to oven drying with olive oil, salt & spices. Only way I’ve seen my wife eat it, other than when it disappears in stews & chili. I think I will go sit on the patio and watch the rain. Cheers 🍻 & thanks for your videos!

Hi Joe. Have you tried yellow sticky traps for the whiteflies? Is your tree kale the one you can grow from cuttings? I had a purple one given to me a few years back but it died in a compromised wicking bed. 😓 Didn't realise the water was being used up after about a day or so due to tree roots. Hope the rain keeps up for you mate. Cheers. 🍻🍻

@@RobsAquaponics I had not considered yellow sticky tape, worth a try. I'm sure it won't be any worse than my attempt at sucking them out of the air with a wet/dry vac. I bet cuttings of the kale will root, put a couple tests in the deep water raft, had a couple of empty spots from harvesting a lettuce and a bok choi. (I left the bok choi go a little too long, it got a little fibrous.) This morning it was sunny and warm, didn't look at the thermometer, but the sun was a little harsh on my balding head, guessing upper 20's (~27?) but a cool front came in with the rain, dropping down to 15. Wife is going to want me to fire up the fire place tonight. Looks like rain in the forecast for the next few days! Cheers!

nice yield, I grew them twenty odd years ago in foam boxes with similar results as you got. only trouble was the runner burrowed through the foam. was told by the farmer whom I got the stock from not to grow the little tear drop ones only the large bulbus ones as you will get less larger ones at harvest of you do. I noticed a couple with a dark ring around in the flesh that's a calcium deficiency. going to give them a run this year after watching yours, hopefully I can get some stock from the health food shop. well done 👍

If you have soil in root pouches in a (what I think you call) dual root zone setup, like in your bathtub here, do any of the fine soil particles make it out of the bag and into the aquaponics system? If they do, is that a major concern?

Do you ever get the water chestnuts flowering and going to seed? Just curious whether that's a practical way of propagating them so they can acclimatise to different areas over multiple generations, or whether like potatoes, replanting the corms/tubers is the only really practical way.

I've never seen them go to seed here mate. I just did a quick search & it looks like they don't set seeds but may set a flower of sorts according to the images here, plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eleocharis~dulcis
