Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Күн бұрын

In this week's FARMVLOG we have a general catch up on the work we've been doing on the farm - we look at the new brash hedge, fencing and gates we have put in to create a laneway to safely and quickly move the goats and geese to areas of the farm. We look at the beautiful flowering cherry plum and discuss why they may not be successful. We check in with the goats and see how Mandy, our goat that is in kid, is doing and what we need to do to prepare for kidding. We have a look at the polytunnel and see how the veg beds have changed before looking at some hardy, cold climate fig varieties we are growing. We then venture out into the market garden where we are creating a tree nursery and look at our first attempts at grafting apple and plum trees. We then spend the afternoon planting hops in our food forest. We look at why and how we are using existing alder trees to grow our hops up, using the tall, skinny tree trunks as a growing support for the vigorous climbers.

About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, a quarter acre Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) market garden and 8 acre permaculture designed forest garden farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy goats for all our raw milk needs, Shetland sheep and geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.

We will list your name at the end of each vlog episode so everyone knows how brilliant you are! We will also keep you updated on our farm work/life by posting exclusive video content that is not available on KZbin such as FARMVLOG outtakes, behind the scenes footage, hints & tips and more in depth videos discussing the many permaculture systems to be found on the farm PLUS the odd photo from Rosa and James.

Quite the blossom on the cherry plum! And quite the belly on Rosa and Mandy here, wow how beautiful! Interesting to see how the hops, cold hardy figs and your apple and plum crafts will do. I hope to do all the same things some day here. So inspiring, thank you and lots of love!

Your VLOG has inspired me! It has been nearly 5 years now since I inherited 4 hectares of a tropical island in the Philippines. The land itself has poor soil that is not suitable for farming, but probably just for subsistence horticulture. The real natural bounty is in the surrounding marine ecosystem, where the locals obtain sustenance through fishing. However, the marine environment is under stress from pollution and over-fishing. I wish to retire soon so I can devote my retirement to enhancing the marine ecosystem and improving it for future generations by establishing a sustainable homestead on my property from which I can launch projects to enrich the local ecosystem.

Planted hops last year here in Quebec. Winters are down to -40 here and it’s just poking up again now 👍🏼👍🏼 so should be ok in Scotland. Love your dead fence too! I need to do that.

So good to catch up with you again…….interesting video, as usual. I seemed to have missed you for awhile. Extremely interested in all your trees etc. But wondering what happened to your kitchen after you took the floor up etc. also the end product of the big shed your wonderfully useful mate was building? Rosa looks fantastic, not long now I guess, all the best for the special day. Please…..if you have any time……let us know when the baby arrives! Thanks

Wow thanks. I was just considering what climbing vines which produce fruit or any other yield would work here in southern Sweden (we have a similar climate here to Scotland) and I was just thinking about hops as an alternative to finding some cold hardy kiwi fruits. And now I know it'll work.

We found a nice big hop growing up an elder and across the bank of the burn at our place. It's healthy, no idea how old but we haven't seen it flower yet. Cops gales out of the west, so hopefully it will be happier once our new tree plantings grow. Should try to divide it or take cuttings, give you some. If someone planted it in Caithness a long time ago it must be worthwhile.

So many things I always want to ask questions on, discuss and share with y'all about the things y'all are doing. It all looks amazing! Well done! Rosa, I believe your labor will be easier on you because you are active and I imagine it is helpful for you to have some other "ladies" around who are also about to drop. Y'all are in my prayers and I'm sure I can speak for all who watch y'alls videos that we look forward to seeing the wee-one! A bit of an update from the mountains of NC; broody hens and batches of already hatched chicks running about. Eight pups 5.5 months old now (Mountain Feist/Italian Greyhound) and 6 doelings and 2 3yo wethers coming in a month (La Manchas, Toggens and Obers). Peace and blessings!

Its just me. Doing everything on my own. There's only a 1.5 mile footpath, 500' elevation ascent and descent going to my land, so haven't been able to find a partner or landmates who're not willing to be "inconvenienced?" I've nurtured my fruit/nut trees all from seed, my perennial plants, etc. Still clearing and plantimg. I'm not willing to leave them. I've been asked to before to leave it before. Hello! Sorry for the slow reply. It's Autumn Olive, which is elaeagnus Umbalata. I think it gets called 'olive' because its leaves resemble olive? Thanks so much for watching!

I've heard that "high pruned" trees are called "Shredded". I don't know how accurate that is. Anyway, I've done similar here in Kentucky USA with black locust trees. I'll use them for posts for my woodshed when they get stout enough.

I really enjoy see you care for the animals and nature and each other. ♥️I live in sweden so we have a pretty similar weatherpatern going on. I was wondering.. the comfrey you just planted, is it bocking 14 and are you going to sell rootpieses from it? I ordered from internet, quite a lot but i never got it.. My best regards and good luck with everything!

Love your integrated waste system. We do that with our 80 hens. The trouble is, I can't find any figures or numbers on your videos. How viable is it all? Are you making an agricultural wage each? , etc., etc.,. How many eggs, litres of milk, etc.,
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching, although not sure which system you mean, I'm presuming the chicken/straw yard? We used to have just under 90 hens for egg production, selling them in the veg boxes but we no longer keep those numbers. On the whole you won't find that sort of information in the vlogs as our focus is more on the design/maintenance of permaculture systems, we often discuss income/costs etc more in depth during consultations and sometimes on the tours. With regards to viability, the market garden/CSA veg boxes was our main enterprise which is certainly profitable if you have the correct market around your farm. The other things like the eggs (now) and dairy are just for home consumption which helps keep our food costs down. Having a cheap cost of living obviously helps make small farming viable. Hope that helps.

Have you considered growing your own rootstock? Its very straight forward using mound layering techniques. Supply of rootstock has been very limited over the past couple of years. So you could sell them or use them for your own grafting projects.

Amazing timing, I've just bought a couple of hops plants for our garden here in Torphins! I wasn't sure whether to plant them out yet as I was worried about frost getting to them. Hadn't thought about using a cloche so that's what I'll do 🙂

Some of the hedges we made 3 or more years ago are still complete, though the first parts to go are the upright sticks, but they are easily replaced.
