Since I stopped shampooing my hair everyday, the thickness and shine has improved so much! I sleep with it in loose side plaits so it doesn't tangle when I sleep. Every morning in the shower I wet it so the water can rinse loose dirt and germs off. I shampoo it every 3 days when the grease build up starts to show. I do however put conditioner in every day. After my shower I gently comb my conditioned hair and put oil on the ends. I very rarely use heat tools. I love to braid my healthy hair! :)

Sweetheart, you can use coconut oil. I used to have very damaged hair a year ago, 'cause I would succumb my locks to vicious heat damage like blow drying, permanent straightening, harsh chemicals, brushing when wet, etc etc. and after discovering coconut oil, it changed my hair for the best!

shampoo strips of the extra heavy oils (noticeable, or slick back your hair even) that were produced at the scalp through out the day, then conditioning adds light oils and softening. its okay to shower everyday. its completely fine for you. blow drying is okay. tip for blow drying is you can use the hotter setting as long as the hair is still very wet, but when it gets about half dry, use the cooler setting on the dryer; leaves it healthy and soft. :)

I never cut my hair. And it grows super fast. I think it's nonsense for people to say that its mandatory to cut it for it to grow... I take great care of my hair, its very special to me. I use organic shampoo and conditioner and i use special treatments for my ends. My hair generally grows about 5 inches a year and is now past my rear. :) Love your tips!

As a nurse I can tell you this is very good advice. The only thing that you can put on the ends of your hair to make it healthier is natural oils. Your hair needs oils in order to be healthy. If you wash your hair every day it WILL damage the hair. If you don't want to walk around with greasy hair, buy a dry shampoo that you can spray on the roots. This will help your hair SOOO much.

Use only conditioner and squeeze most of the water out of your hair before (carefully!) combing your hair with a comb. If you are rushed, at least rinse with fresh water and flip your hair upside down, getting water down to the roots from every angle. Get the conditioner from the root to tip, and from every angle imaginable. Swimmer's shampoo is usually very gel-like, so go swimmer's, normal, swimmer's, normal, normal (shampoo, shampoo, conditioner, conditioner, conditioner) Hope it helps! :)

@simplypianissimo The reason overwashing is bad for hair is because it dries out the actual length of the hair. I only wash my scalp with shampoo. It's easy to do if you put the shampoo on your hands and work it in from your forehead back. Do not bunch your hair up and lather, just apply the soap to your scalp and massage it in. Rinse, then apply conditioner to the whole length. Another option...baking soda rinse for the whole length, no soap or conditioner.

Love this. Been growing my hair out from a pixie-cut & quit washing my hair w/ shampoo about a year ago. I use a special mix of baking soda & herbal oils to "wash" it w/ cold water, which breaks up the extra oils and bacteria. In between washes i fluff it up w/ a dry shampoo made from corn starch & perfume oils. I also switched to a badger-bristle brush which does a lovely job of smoothing & redistributing the hair's natural oils down to the ends. It's really long now & my husband LOVES it.

@PerfectPride everytime your hair is wet, its is more fragile, and more likey to snap. So there is a bigger risk of damaging it. Its better to put your hair under a shower cap when you are showering and not washing your hair. If you feel you need conditioner you can just use a leave-in.

Mine used to be like that too. I used to have to shampoo TWICE every day! You can train it to be less oily though - try tying it up in a ponytail on the top of your head overnight, this discourages oil from travelling down the hair shaft. You can also try a dry shampoo when it's really bad. And try not to brush it too much (I only brush mine when it's damp after I wash it, which is once every three days now). Just wanted to share what helped for me, because I know that it can be a nightmare!

If you don't want to spend as much money on the dry shampoos, baby powder or baking soda work just as well. Sprinkle some on the greasiest parts, wait a few minutes, then comb or brush it out. And the baby powder makes your hair smell nice. c:

Washing: If your scalp is used to you washing it every single day then it is working hard to make the oils to keep up with you. If you change from washing your hair everyday to every other day or every three days you may notice that it looks extra greasy....it is worth it to suffer through for a while. eventually your scalp will learn how often you are washing your hair and it wont be on overload anymore.

I cut mine once a year :) I also use coconut oil, and I was every three to four days, when it gets greasy up top. When drying I squeeze with a towel, and never blow dry. It's not that long yet, but I'm hoping for TBL, since I've had it one before. It was still growing back then.

@elizm09 usually what i do to avoid having to trim all of my hair more than twice a year is spend an hour or two finding and cutting split ends individually. that way i don't loose the length of my hair because of split ends. I'm really prone to split ends because I live in Phoenix, AZ and we have 115 degree summers.

I love these tips. First time I've ever encountered someone who gave GOOD hair tips, and not 'So the best way to get your hair to behave is to soak your hair, straighten it, curl the bangs and then get it to hold with gel/hairspray.' >.> Oh, and the always popular 'cut 5 inches off every month and a half to prevent split ends.' u_u Exaggerated, yes, but still >.>

Also, if you notice that your hair gets greasy really really fast think about if you are touching it and playing with it a lot. Your skin on your hands also creates oils to keep from drying out and if you touch your hair a lot you may be transferring the oil from your hands to your hair, making it look worse. And last, a question for your Loepsie...would you suggest blow drying on a low cool setting as an alternative?

Not cutting your hair is the worst thing you can do for long hair. The split ends keep unraveling through brushing and combing. A trim keeps it healthy and I've never had a stylist tell me I needed inches cut off like you said they did. They always suggest and inch or two, depending on how much damage is done to your hair and they'll never argue if you ask for less than an inch.

@MakeupByTati I think she means more extreme lengths like knee and ankle length (or longer), because not everybody is capable of growing that long (because of genetics). But I agree that otherwise if people take good care of their hair, they'll be abled to grow it as long as they're capable.
@cableknit

@ARMYWIFE0126 It's recommended to cut so often solely to remove the split ends - hence why she says to only trim as much (and as often) as you need (if you don't have split ends, you don't need to cut it). Cutting hair doesn't make it grow faster since you are cutting the dead portions; growth occurs at the root, not at the ends.

I haven't died, straightened, blow-dried, or used any kind of heat on my hair in over six months. Since my last straightening (which I used to do every day) I have cut a total of about 5-6 inches off my hair, trying to get rid of the damage. My hair is still frizzy and it still breaks. Sometimes I think it's unfair how I do nothing to my hair and other girls DO yet still have healthier hair. Maybe if I switch to Burt's Bees shampoo it will look better (because of sulfates).

@MissPhyscoBiatchh try not washing your hair much as you can, trying doing egg mask, or olive oil mask once a week or a month, don't use anti split end shampoos, since they will just hide your split ends. try using vinegar as a conditioner. I know that sounds gross, but add little bit of vinegar, and a lot of water, and leave that in for a while you do other things, or just leave it in. You can also add rosmary water (hot water + rosemary(preferably fresh once)). hope this helped :D

i have black hair and i have some blue highlights. my hair grows about an inch and a half per month. i do use a hair dryer. but i never use flat irons or curling irons, or any styling products. i have found that it is best to wash your hair every second day, if you have oily hair. and i really have to disagree with the do not trim your hair part. i have bangs so i trim them just a tiny bit every week, and they grow like weeds.

@amzycee123 but if her hair doesn't get extremely greasy it isn't a problem. @Apotbellyext 1. You only need to cut the ends that are split, which you can trim individually as you see them. 2. The entire hair shaft is dead as soon as it leaves the scalp - nothing can 'repair' or 'heal' it. The sebum/oil from your scalp can help protect the hair, but it doesn't repair. 3. Her hair is henna-ed. Henna gives an orange/reddish tint to hair, like an all natural hair dye, and also conditions the hair. Shouldn't you know vaguely what you're talking about to do the same thing?

@xee0o split ends appear as result of damage. if you treat your hair nice, wear up-dos and protect it while you sleep (silk bonnet for example) you may never get split ends, which means you don't need to trim. @carolineblackrocks You should cut your hair, maybe every 2-3 months, and the length is 1-3 cm or enough to remove split/damaged ends. Your hairdresser sometimes reccomends every 6-8 weeks because they want to maintain or preserve the style that you wanted, and take away little bits of damage. Also your scalp notices the difference in length, and because your body is always trying to find balance, your scalp will grow hair until the balance is met.

Unfortunately when it comes to your body adapting to less showering, it takes time. I used to have short hair that I would have to wash daily because my bangs would get greasy if I didn't. It's a lot of will power, but you have to resist the urge to clean it. I decreased my natural oil output by showering only every other day. Now while that may sound nasty, your body will learn that it no longer has to pump out so much oil. I have longer hair now, but my bangs don't get as greasy anymore.

Also, one more question: I've got a friend with short hair who washes her hair every morning, as it does tend to look rather greasy when she wakes up. I keep telling her it's bad for her hair, but I understand her desire to not have greasy hair. So, how long would she have to wait to reach a sort of equilibrium (for lack of a better word), or to return her hair to a natural oiliness? Or should she just keep washing it daily, since it's short? (About chin-length, I'd say.)

@101foreveryoung Well, "dead" or split ends really depend on your hair texture. Someone with stronger hair may not need to cut their hair for a whole year; I certainly don't. I have elbow-length hair and I haven't cut it for over a year. I've only ever found one or two split ends which I simply snip off with nail scissors. Even the weakest, dryest hair, though, doesn't need to be cut every three months like the hairdressers say. The ends can be taken care of with serums and haircare products.

When you wash your hair to much it loses it's natural oils. If your hair lacks natural oils it won't curl or straighten as well. Don't tie your hair up or braid it to often, it drains your hair out. Be gentle with your hair, treat it as if it was your bestest friend. Massage your head more often, and yes please do shower but wash your hair only 5 times a week. I recommend dry shampoos (dandruff shampoos). They don't dry out your hair. Head&Shoulders is better than Selsun Blue

I'm on the swim team though what should I do? I wash it after I get out of the pool to clean the chlorine out of it.

I know you say that we shouldn't wash our hair daily and I would love to not have to, so do you have any tips to keep my hair from looking like a grease ball between washes until it gets use to the times between washes?

Have you tried to use a dry shampoo to extend washings? I used to shower every other day, but I've been able to stretch that out an extra day or two by applying a dry shampoo (or even cornstarch) to the roots to soak up the oils from the scalp.

What about when you go to the gym everyday? What do you recommend for hair washing with that?

@IsadorellaConchita Lukewarm like Loepsie already said but, when you rinse the hair with cold water at the very end of washing it, every single hair "closes" and with that it looks more shiny when its dry. Cant describe it that good in english sorry xD But it's really true and I'm also doing it and it helps alot.

I guess Terminal Length at shoulder length is quite rare, if your hair doesn't grow past your shoulders, then the ends are probably getting destroyed by rubbing over your shoulders too often --> wear them in an updo to keep them safe. If that doesn't work... well...
