I feel us thin haired folks should get a discount on hair dye and highlights too! We don't use near the product as those with medium to thick hair!

Oh my goodness yes! I have a wonderful hairdresser that really takes her time to make sure everything is really spaced out and highlighted well so it grows out without being noticeable but still. So much less product! Actually you know what would be nice (sorry stream of consciousness haha) if we just got a complementary mask in our treatment! To compensate haha

I was so relieved when the video started, you have no idea. If I see one more video where a woman talks about how she cares for her thin/fine hair and when you watch it she has very usual medium thickness...I wanna screeeaam. I'm sure they're all super lovely women but so many of them do not know what they're talking about, they don't know what thin hair is. Like, I know it's an insecurity of yours but it's so important to have these videos. You watch what people think is thin hair and you're like ugh am I abnormal if THAT'S thin?
@AmandaWeldon3 жыл бұрын
I can totally relate to this. One of my biggest frustrations is bringing an image to my hairdresser after looking up fine hair styles and then realizing that the inspo isn't anywhere close to where I'm at and I won't be able to actually obtain that look. So let's start creating content on here that we can relate to. :)
@rowanofthenorth20513 жыл бұрын
I think some of the confusion/inconsistency is that 'thin' and 'fine' aren't referring to the same thing. I have fine hair (the individual strand), but quite a lot of it. So it looks good day one when it's all volumized, but if I pony tail it or braid it and compress it down, it absolutely disappears, and it's like... half the hair. You could have thick hair strands, but thin hair (amount of hair) overall. :)

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video. My daughter inherited my thin, fine hair. I’ve always had a complicated relationship with my hair, but don’t want her to inherit that from me, too. Learning how to care for her hair is a huge step in the right direction, and helps me appreciate mine, too.
@rebeccamx29532 жыл бұрын
As a hairstylist i must say that drying your hair fully naturally isn’t always the best solution. Wet hair, especially when it’s bleached is very very fragile. 10 times more fragile than dry hair. So when you don’t blow dry your hair at all the hair structure is still open and with the movements we make there is always a friction which causes the hair to break much easier than when it’s dry. I wouldn’t say it’s good to blow dry the hair when it’s still wet but maybe when it’s 70-80% dry and then blow dry it with low temperature so the structure from the hair is smooth again. I’m German so I hope you understand what iam trying to say 😅

Im glad I found this video, because I've always had super fine hair and its my biggest frustration. Especially as both my sisters have beautiful thick hair that grows really long. I've spent years and years perfecting my routine, products and care to make the best of my hair, grow it long and healthy. For me washing every 3 days, using a homemade dry shampoo in-between, sleeping on a silk pillow and a French plait, no ponytails. Always air dry upside down or with a loose bun on top of my head, never let it dry flat on my head. Use silk scrunchies. Protein and multivitamin supplements. Bi-weekly overnight oil treatments. Aloe vera scalp treatments once a week. See all the shit people with fine hair have to go through 😭
@AmandaWeldon4 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness Beatrice! You should run a masterclass for us all it seems like you've really perfected your routine! I definitely want to get into more braids versus ponytails in the future. It's so much better for avoiding breakage close to the root! You've got a TON of people who can relate here! Sending you some love! xo

My mum and my sister were blessed with long, loose, white blonde ringlets. I had such fine hair that there wasn’t enough to cut until I was 6. Now I reckon I just have a child’s hair. It was never a pretty colour, either, so I am currently panicking about not being able to renew my highlights and (sob!) extensions...

Oh I feel your pain..quite lierally! It is so demoralising..we really aught to get suitable toppers or extensions at discount by the health service or something..I know that those with alopecia or cancer hairloss would probably envy us but having hair that always looks awful has a really bad effect on our self esteem and mood. And most folk really dont understand how much it affects us.
@Jill_of_trades3 жыл бұрын
Tips start at 3:12 1. Be easy on your hair - pretty much in regards to anything...Use a brush with flexible bristles so less breakages happen. Use a wide tooth comb instead of a.thin tooth comb. 2. Be mindful with how much you are colouring /processing your hair ..Accept your hair for what it is as much as possible 3. Condition the bottom part of your hair only 4. Turn down the temperature : rinse with lukewarm water 5. Do not brush vigorously (especially when out of the shower) 6. Do not use so many products 7. Dry hair naturally. 9. Microfibre towel is better than cotton-roch towel 10. Trim your hair regularly ; every 6-8 weeks 11. Use dry shampoo 12. Towel dry pat the dry shampoo 13.
@ddhu53963 жыл бұрын
13. Sleep on silk pillowcase 14. Go to doctor, get tested for issues 15. Check your diet 16. Drink more water 17. Weekly hair treatment 18. No sulphates, silicones, parabens, alcohols in your hair products 19. Use less heat 20. Embrace 2nd day hair

Layers make hair look thinner, but a lot of hair stylists will tell their thin hair clients that they would look good w/ face framing layers. You should get a long lob (long bob), layers are the worst.
@AmandaWeldon4 жыл бұрын
I have totally been down this road! And then had SUPER SHORT layers and cringedddd. Definitely working towards growing even layers and then keeping that length. 🥰
@isabellefisher87903 жыл бұрын
PLEASE, DO NOT LET ANYONE LAYER YOUR HAIR!! 23 years ago I had a one length bob, and then, as the technician finished the trim, she suddenly started that business of picking it up and slicing into to it “to add body”!!! Aargh! Since then, I have had the nightmare of a layer that grew shorter and shorter as it broke from using straighteners so it blended.. Have had extensions (Great lengths, very fine ones cut into two strands each) ever since as otherwise I would have only one layer of my already baby fine hair!! Very expensive!!!! I have to say, lockdown has stopped the highlighting, so it has managed to grow out better. But please, NEVER let anyone layer your fine hair! Xx

I just got my haircut a couple of weeks ago and I made the mistake of letting the hairstylist layer it slightly. She suggested it would have more volume. Big mistake! ... and I will now slowly let it grow out again and start over. My boyfriend, after seeing me the first time after the haircut, noted how much thinner it looked. That’s not something you want to hear what you’re struggling with thin to begin with 🤦♀️😱🤣
@wynxamatina3 жыл бұрын
I have thin and fine hair, its slightly wavy too, so with layers it really gives it more volume but ofcouse it only works with short hair, it can't be done with long hair. It does look alot "thicker" than it did before. I think it just depends if u have straight hair it may look thinner, but just saying!

Great video! Hello fine hair tribe, I can totally relate. Here are a few low-cost items that really have helped my hair. 1) Weekly mix an egg with 1 teaspoon olive oil, massage into scalp and through the hair (cover with plastic cap and leave in for 20-60 minutes). Messy but worth it!! 2) aloe Vera gel - minimum 2x daily scalp massage morning and evening. Add essential oil of choice for yummy smell 😀 3) use aloe Vera gel for hair styling too Thru the years I have spent a lot of $$ on hair products and these have been just as effective if not better. Also looks like I am older than most of you, however during pandemic my hair got a LOT better. So there is hope 🔥😎

I know I'm late to this video, personally I tip my head forward in the shower and wash it upside-down. This ensures I only shampoo the roots, rinse then condition the ends. It also allows me to turn down the water temperature to cold. Then I gentle wrap in a micro fibre turbin for 10mins then gentle hair dry only running my fingers through as a comb/brush.

I have very long hair, and a lot of it, but it's so ridiculously fine! When I get deep conditioning treatments the ladies say my hair is as fine as a little girl's hair. It's so frustrating the amount of effort it takes to keep it from breakage, just sleeping wrong can cause a million split ends. (10/10 recommended using silk pillowcases if you have fine hair) However, by eating healthy and diligently protecting it from the damage that heat, friction, and unprotective hairstyles so easily cause, I think it is possible to learn to appreciate the positives of having fine hair. For example, I have tail bone length hair and I hardly get headaches compared to my friends with much thicker, but also shorter hair than I have. I also think my hair hardly knots because there is not much friction because fine hair is sometimes softer. We hust have to look at the bright side :)

I struggled with my hair for so many years! I too used to get extensions done and I was addicted dying my hair blonde. My hair is naturally a dark brown so, the more i dyed it the thinner it became. When i had to remove the extensions I had very little hair left. It hurt me to the core. I felt so bad about myself. I went on a healthy hair journey for years trying to grow thicker longer hair. But i always had frizzy hair so i would have to heat style it to make it look decent. Then when the pandemic hit I quit styling my hair and tried the curly girl method. And my hair changed soooo much. It is now so long, the longest I have ever grown it and it has volume! The biggest change was I stopped brushing my hair when it was dry and only in the shower with conditioner. And my hair stopped breaking ! I realize this isnt for everyone but it really changed my hair and I just wanted to share with you.

Amanda, you've given some great tips here! My hair has been thinning since the beginning of the pandemic. I am older, so aging may be playing a part, but stress is a factor I believe. I started washing my hair less, even 4 or 5 days apart. I must admit, I've tried some high priced "anti-aging" shampoo/conditioners that just haven't made much difference. I've had my blood checked, good iron levels, after eating (sorry vegans) lamb liver. This was recommended by a naturopath for raising iron level. There are lots foods that can help with staying healthy: Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, walnuts, dark green leafy veggies. Supplements: Collegen, Biotin, Vit D. I've also heard that gently massaging the scalp can help by getting the blood flowing. So far, my hair is still thinning, getting harder to manage. I know it is time to get a shorter haircut :(

When my hair came in after birth, it was light red and quickly turned to white blonde. It stayed that way until I was about 40, and then started growing in slightly mousey. I have had extremely fine, thin, flyaway hair all my life. I may have an advantage because of a small bit of wave. My hair really frustrated me due to it's fineness and limpness! I have done some research and found out that naturally blonde hair is missing a layer in the hair. Normal hair has a cuticle, a cortex, and a medulla, which is the center most part of the hair which gives it body and strength. Natural blondes often do not have the medulla, which is why our hair feels waaaayyyyy tooooo soft! Knowing that didn't really help any, but it did explain why my hair was so unmanageably soft. I have noticed also that products really weigh my hair down quickly and make really stringy and stiff. You are correct, it's about acceptance and doing the best we can with what we have. A little trick I learned, I condition my hair first and comb out all the tangles and then I gently wash it. It works much better for my hair. btw...protein in my hair products really helps my hair have a bit of texture.

I have naturally thin and fine hair. It's so hard to find hair tips and care (especially natural hair care) for our hair type. Thanks for having one of the only videos addressing it. I've been doing so much to try to help my hair grow longer. I haven't used heat on my hair in about 5 years and did no shampoo for a few. I know it's my genetics but I hate feeling hopeless about my hair and I really want long hair. Considering shaving it because that's about the only thing I haven't tried for it health.

I appreciate this video so much. It’s hard to explain to ppl (like my sister) with luscious locks how emotional having thin hair can be. Since high school, stress induces telogen effluvium (sp?) can spur my sudden hair loss . It comes back but takes time and the hair falling out is traumatic.seeing the ponytail get thinner and thinner is hard . I’ve tried just about every product (and spent an inordinate amount of money) trying to find the best ways to make hair look thicker. I am going to compile a list of my favorites.

Additional tips: Add collagen peptides to your coffee every morning (decaf is better; caffeine affects absorption), plus take multivitamins and omega-3 supplements. Reduce stress - yoga, self-care and removing external toxic people or situations. Change your birth control, if possible, to non-hormonal options. Birth control eats up your B vitamins and can cause hair loss and thinning. Last, find a hairdresser who listens! So many hairdressers chop off all my progress because thin hair, well, looks thin. :) Amanda your hair looks beautiful in the video. Thank you for posting.

During the pandemic, I started training my hair to shampooing less often. I was a daily shampoo person, and felt that I couldn’t break away from that because my scalp would look oily. Well now a couple years later I only shampoo twice a week. I love the batiste dry shampoo!! I recently bought a waiver which my daughter was using and it’s really helped to add fullness to my hair. I highly recommend giving that a try!

AGREED on limiting products in fine thin hair. I was also born with this hair type. My products for different styles, a root lifter, a texturizer or a beach texture spray if I want to air dry, no heat. A powder root lifter works well. They sell with color for those pesky root touchups. Gray hair is another FINE mess. I use a hair topper, people think I'm younger than my age & usually remark, your hair looks great. WORK it GIRLS!

Brigit Smith, same!! Or my face, either etc. My husband once told me (after the first time he ever saw me dive into a pool and swim underwater, coming up to surface at the ladder where he stood) that I have a pretty face. He said you can always tell if a woman is pretty if -she looks good with wet hair, meaning not using hair to cover or mask flaws or less than lovely features. Some women refuse to even go in the water at the beach, wear makeup to the beach, or else they won't get their hair wet. They depend on their hair to look good. I don't because I can't, but I'm ok with it.

I really enjoyed this video. I have thin straight hair as well. I have always hated it, because I had to do so much to it, to get it to look full. My best friend in high school had a full head of thick hair that looked like a pyramid on her it was so full. I was very envious of that hair. Now, I am much older, 66 years old and my hair is starting to thin. I did go to the doctor and my hormones were not right. I have upped my dosage of Levothyroxine and am trying Minoxidil every night. It is not too bad, but I do not want it to get worse. It looks like I caught it in time. I have been using the Minoxidil for three months. I also started to take biotin and 2 scoops of protein powder every day. The thing is, that I have to wash my hair every day to get that stuff off my scalp. Before the pandemic I was always at the gym and I would come home with a sweaty scalp or hair being on the floor. I had to wash it. I use a hair clarifying shampoo once a week followed by a conditioning mask. I sleep on a silk pillow case and I put my hair up in a top knot every night before bed. I agree with everything you said about healthy hair and I feel the same way about my self confidence. I think you might be on to something about not costing as much for a hair cut as a fuller head. Never thought of that before. :-)

Thank you so much for leaving such a thoughtful comment Anita! I think this is a really important thing to note that you brought up. I have also different times in my life gone to the doctor just to check in and have some bloodwork done after inquiring about thinning hair. I think for anyone reading who is trying to find a solution this is a great place to start. Hormones play such a big part in our bodies chemistry and if you can understand on a biological level where you are at, it's easier to know how to tackle the issue! Sending you some love it seems like you are doing all the right things. And know this is totally normal and natural for us to have this amount of hair. :)

Doing some research for an upcoming vid about my thin, fine hair and volumizing products & found your video. When you opened with the "oil-in-the-hair" issue, I figured you'd choose to wash it again! Me, too. A styling product I really like is the L'Oreal Blow Dry Creme (1/2 tsp before drying). My hair will only hold a curl from a curling iron if I use John Amico's Curling Iron Texturizer spray (a.k.a. "CIT"). (You can call them to ask which salons in your area sell it to avoid paying a shipping fee.) And my favorite hair spray is Matrix's Vavoom spray (and I can stand the scent!). I'm testing some other volumizing products now and hair growth products (I lost more hair in Oct & Nov and it hasn't grown back, like I had any to lose!). :D

I use Nizoral shampoo which has a more gentle sulfate called sodium laureth sulfate and it keeps my scalp happy but doesn’t dry out the ends. I like the Ouai detox shampoo for occasional use too. Sulfate Free shampoos sometimes don’t clean my scalp well enough even with a lather, rinse repeat. I avoided ALL silicones for the past 2 years (the Curly Curl method has a lot of great cross-over recommendations for type 1a hair too!). However, during the winter months, my hair gets SOOOOOO dry and staticky because we heat with firewood for 5 months of the year. I needed to take back a few lightweight water-soluble modified silicones to combat the dryness and seal my cuticle to prevent moisture loss. Lightweight modified silicones work better for me than lightweight oils such as jojoba, argan or grape seed oils that are ok at the bottom of the ingredients list, but make my hair look stringy no matter how little I use. I can’t use anything with coconut oil, dimethicone, Shea butter, dimethiconol, olive oil, avocado oil, etc. I wish someone would just develop a line of haircare specific for type 1a so I don’t have to research and experiment as my part-time job 😆

@C.M. Bright It will never look thick, best you can do is just cut it in a straight cut not to take any volume away or invite more split ends with layering. Believe me it's easier to make the cut itself look clean and not bulky at the bottom, you don't have to sculpt it as much as with thick hair.

I cannot put into words how i feel about my lifeless hair. I am always thinking about it. If there is an event that i must attended my first thought is, how will my hair survive this occasion. Is it outside, is it windy, is it hot. If the event is near the beach i might as well wear a wig. I even find when i am on vacation, different water makes my hair even softer. If i never had to leave my house my hair wouldn’t be so bad. It’s the weather elements that is the biggest enemy. I am constantly on the search for product that will help my hair survive the day. My hair is short. No pulling up for me. I feel when longer it weighs down the root to make it even flatter. I am embarrassed a lot about my hair. If anyone out there has a product that they feel can help, i would be grateful. I try to eat food that will help my hair to be stronger and healthier but that doesn’t seem to help. Thanks for the sounding board. It does help to know you not alone.

When I lighten my hair, the hair seems to have a bit more body to it, BUT it's more tangly upfront. So, to prevent breakage I use a wide tooth comb to detangle before I get in the shower. When my hair is midlength, I put on conditioner first, let it set for 5 minutes, rinse, then shampoo my roots, and rinse some more. When my hair is longer, I really like Aveda's anti breakage spray! It's a great detangler. I still wash my hair every day, bc I have dark blonde hair that looks greasy even with dry shampoo.

I justttt took out my extensions yesterday and I am ready to embrace the natural hair life! It's truly the best time to do it! We can do this! Just have to get used to the natural feel and force ourselves to be as gentle as possible! :)
