Hi mate the reason it is best to plant the whole nut and shell is the seedling uses the nut as a food source for the first couple of months so the shell will give it protection from pests and drying out. You can graft a good cultivar on to your seedlings if you have access to some know cultivars. Make sure you cinture the branch you intend to take scions off at least 5 week's beforehand. Good luck with everything in these strange time's and happy Macadamia growing.👍

I haven't got any of the Hawaiian varieties yet but there are a few available here in Australia, I live in Adelaide and while Macadamia grow here it's not there native area, that is around the Queensland and New South Wales boarder . I hope you have luck and success with your endeavours, all the best.👍

full uncracked nuts is how we plant them at commercial nurseries in australia, we actually just soak them in water, and plant them in sand until they sprout and grow for a few months old and then put them into the plastic bag pots with potting mix, the trick to how we do it is it keep them in a plastic hothouse so they swell up and crack, not all nuts are guaranteed to sprout so planting a few is always a good idea, i think about half dont sprout, we planted 40000 in one bed and only got about 10-15k pop up

Soaking is not a good idea, you will get mould in a greenhouse with high humidity. Sand has very little nutrients and needs a lot of water which is not good for propagation. We plant 140 000 trees every 6 weeks with a 95% take. From planting seed to selling ready to plant grafted trees is about 8 to 9 months.

We grow Macadamia trees at our nursery in Nelspruit, South Africa. The best nut to grow for rootstock is Beaumont(695) and Nelmac2. Grafting cultivars like 816, A4, Nelmac2 and Beaumont trees for farmers across the country. Seeds we collect from our own orchards as we are commercial farmers also. What growing medium did you use? Pine bark?

@orglindeque
@orglindeque 3 жыл бұрын
@@pachipachi6689 what is your average temperature? Mac trees grow best is a regulated temperature between 28 and 35 degrees celcius. Ideal humidity should be 80 to 90%. Try to keep your seedlings out of direct sunlight from growing seed to grafting. After grafting when the stem turns brown above the grafted area trees can be moved to direct sunlight for hardening off before planting in the orchard.

Hello. If you clip the top it will branch out at lower leaf node axillary buds where there are dormant vegetative buds. You can also wait for the plant to start branching naturally and then prune to the shape you need.

@@RichesToRoots Hi: Thanks so much for your quick response! I actually tried to do that a few weeks back, but it now looks like an upside-down feather duster :P It now looks like a bunch of shoots coming out of the top of a big stick. I tried pruning those so there aren't so many. Should I try pruning off some of the single leaves along the "trunk"? It's from a "Linda" macadamia. Maybe it's an issue with the type of sapling? Mahalo for your kokua!

Do you intend to sell the trees or are you growing them for the nuts? In Brazil they use the shells as medium for orchids 😁 I live in Portugal and here I never saw this nut.
@RichesToRoots
@RichesToRoots 5 жыл бұрын
Probably a little bit of both and one other thing. At this point, I'm just experimenting and seeing how easily I can grow them. If anything in the short term I might sell some as root stock. But I also want to plant quite a few out for nuts. I've chatted with macadamia nut farmers on Hawaii Island that tell me the island can't produce enough nuts to keep up with demand. The same goes for cacao. The other thing is that I just enjoy the process of growing things. So I'm just having fun with the process. The shells are used here as a high quality mulch. Thanks for your questions!

I’ve noticed the cracked shells around one part of where I commonly walk around my neighborhood here in San Diego. For a while I had no idea what they were because they were always opened and completely excavated by birds I assume and I don’t have macadamia nut products often. I tried burying a full one over a year ago but some of our wildlife must’ve gotten to it, and as you stated ants will swarm any remnants. I found another one today and decided to crack it this time (mainly because I was curious and didn’t get a chance to see the seed last time). I’m gonna try to start it inside in a small jar or something and some soil, though knowing when the seedling will be safest to introduce outside will likely be pure guesswork.

Hello. You can get an edible nut from the seed grown tree, but it will take many years to get to maturity and the quality of the nut will be unknown. Grafting will ensure much faster production and a known quality.
