I am convinced that raw okra doesn't get enough appreciation! I love it fried, pickled or raw!!!
@GardenHome5 Жыл бұрын
Do you pick it really small to eat raw? I've never tried it.
@mattpeacock5208 Жыл бұрын
@@GardenHome5 To be honest as soon as it starts to produce, I eat it as a snack while checking on the rest of the garden. Sometimes smaller than my big toe, sometimes as long as my middle finger. For pickling or frying I like to pick Clemson Spineless the size of my middle finger or slightly bigger.
@dogslobbergardens-hv2wf Жыл бұрын
@@mattpeacock5208 my wife is the same way, the small tender okras never make it in the house when she checks the okra patch. 🙃 It doesn't seem to hurt the overall yield any; the plants just keep making more pods.
@TerrieAllred2023 Жыл бұрын
My brother, RIP, used to always GRILL okra! He would take 2 skewers, and pierce each end of the okra, and put several okra on one skewer to make it easy to flip on the grill, and not fall through the grill rack. Grilled until almost charred. Best okra I've ever had, and I have had A LOT! lol
@stevebryce427 Жыл бұрын
Grilled okra could only possibly be second best, only to raw! And that's just my preference, but such a close race, I'm not gonna argue it one way or the other!

I planted the Clemson Spineless okra last year in my raised beds and I had okra May to October here in South Mississippi. I still have okra in my freezer from last year. I planted again a couple of weeks ago and I can’t wait! Love it. I did zig zag plant it in my 16 foot long bed. So awesome.

22:42 My Red Burgundy Okra I ordered from you is approaching 8-10" tall. The leaves have a very distinctive purple-ish coloring and the stalks are deep purple. Just a beautiful plant!

My Red Burgundy has done better so far than Jambalaya and Clemson Spineless. I think I planted the Jambalaya too early...BUT...you don`t expect cold weather in Louisiana this time of year. I only had 25 seeds. So I may not have any of it this year. I think two plants came up. Maybe more will. I just ordered a bunch of odd varieties.
@baneverything5580 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I`m growing six or seven types of okra this year to go with my peas and beans. I like to brown the whole okra pods in a little "George Forman" type grill with real butter or olive oil and then season with onion, garlic, and Cajun seasoning. I like to eat it for breakfast or raw with pickles.

A few years ago and talking to an old timer here. My boyfriend learned and never plant okra before June 1st, thus making sure the ground soil warm enough. We have also soaked the seed in a wet paper towel for a day to help the germination process. We prefer our okra either breaded and fried and canned as well. Per your enthusiasm we are going to order some Red Burgundy okra and try canning that too. Appears that the Old Goat is now the poster child between the Life and Sweet Farm frames! High of 58 today winds up to 40mph and lows in the mid 30's tonight. Did I mention on Sunday a high of 92. The weather is really hampering our gardening plans this year!

Man, that Old Goat is showing himself this week, right between the signs above Greg. Yep, those sweet tater slips can look rough, but they always bounce right back once planted! I appreciate all the tips you give folks about "timing" your plantings. I find that to be a common problem. Some assume it's past last frost date, time to plant EVERYTHING. That's just not the case. Not sure you mentioned it but okra is in the mallow (Malvaceae) family and has the most beautiful bloom in the garden to me! Very much like it's kin, hibiscus. So pretty!! Thanks to Monterey for sponsoring this great giveaway! I'd have to say fried is probably my favorite way to eat okra, but I love it in gumbo, roasted, pickled, stewed with tomatoes and onions, or grilled. I'm with Greg, NO BOILED!

I am growing Red Burgundy, Jambalaya, and Clemson Spineless - around 300 total plants. Clemson Spineless is great because the seeds are cheap and can replace areas where more expensive seed don't germinate. Seeds not germinating is actually a blessing. It lets 10-15% of the crop be a bit behind.
@baneverything5580 Жыл бұрын
Yep, I`ve been filling in empty spots. I planted the same three first and just ordered Burmese, Texas Hill Country, Emerald, some giant pod breed, etc. But I have a BUNCH of Clemson Spineless. I like to brown the whole okra pods in a little "George Forman" type grill (Dash Mini Griddle/Grill...got these because they`re 350w and work with my 500w solar power stations) with real butter or olive oil and then season with onion, garlic, and Cajun seasoning.

My favorite way To cook Okra is Fried!! Love, love, love it. My husband likes pickled and what I call, snotty okra. It's all about the fried for me. I freeze the okra after I bread it... when I'm ready to cook okra, I dip the froze okra in an egg bath and dip the okra again in cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and mashed potato flakes with a little corn starch to help it hang on to the okra, then it's off to the frying pan.

Jing okra did well for me a couple of years ago. Before that I had always grown Clemson Spineless. This year, I have not decided what variety I am growing.
