It's always fun to hear what's going on in other people's climate. Melons, cucumbers? Only if Hoss carries a variety that with withstand six more weeks of frost! I did plant potatoes on the first of March this year, though, and harvested some Top Bunch collards that overwintered (the winter low temperature was -5F). Lots of heavy row covers all around. I'm going early with the potatoes in the hope I can get some before they all burn up in the summer heat. I have had butternut squash store as long as 18 months, but at least a few of them start to go bad well before that. C. pepo and C. maxima seem pretty useless to me, as the vine borers always devastate them before the fruit can mature. I've also grown the unmentioned cushaw (C. argyrosperma) and had it keep around for 9-12 months, though it's probably only reliable for 4-6 months. The other squash species that I know of that wasn't mentioned here is C. ficifolia. I have never grown it, and I suspect I would really have to hunt to find seeds.

Old Goat hiding good tonight! Hanging with the wascally wabbits! Great bunch of info tonight on the squashes! I'd sure like to see that genus/species info on seed packets as well as product page. I know I should keep up with it better, but it sure would be handy on packets when I'm standing in the garden doing some last-minute figuring about crosses. In case folks are wondering, for cross pollination to occur, both genus AND species have to be identical, so even though members of C Pepo, C Maxima, C Moschata are all members of the Cucurbita genus (genus always listed first, species listed after), they are different species and will not cross. Of course, this really only matters if you are saving seeds, from open pollinated varieties, for future planting. Thanks for another great show!

What about putting a net over your strawberries, and also I've done an old cd disc lay a few amongst the strawberries when the sun comes out they reflect different colors of light so it's bright for the birds and they don't like it. You can also place a small rod like in the ground and string a cd to it, it will flap in the wind and the birds don't like it. I've seen it on you tube hollis and Nancy. Gd luck, Nancy from nebraska

The old goat is behind hippity hop. I have winter squash just breaking through the seed starting mix. I might have jumped the gun on them but I'm hoping to beat the vine borers. My Hossinator tomatoes are up and looking good, won't be long before I have to transplant them. I'll never grow another Hubbard squash because the vine borers decimate the vines before they ever get a squash half grown.

Looks like the Old Goat is giving instructions to the 3 bunnies on the top shelf behind Greg (The "Hippity Hop" bunnies) since they are facing him (the goat). I had great results with a summer squash variety called "Smooth Criminal" last year. It set fruit forever. It was a tall variety that needed staking and the squash just set fruit higher and higher on the thick stem. Much better performance than the usual southern crook neck type. I'm planting it again this year. I'm trying to thin my seed backstock as every year I only plant a few seeds out of each pack (we have a moderate raised bed garden, total of 240 sq feet plantable, plus a grow bag area for 'taters on the old firewood rack, and five 17 gallon wicking tubs on the deck). I will plant extra seeds to allow for the likely lower germination rate on the older seeds. I'd rather give them a chance than just toss them out. I may end up giving away a bunch of plants if they do well, but that's OK by me too! As to pumpkins, since I have limited space we usually just plant one of the smaller vine varieties with small fruit. My grandson loves the small pumpkins, and I'm probably going to dedicate one entire 3'x20' bed to pumpkins and some of the smaller watermelon varieties this year.

I am trying to grow some in some self-watering wicking tubs, and would love to can some so I can enjoy it year round.

The canned squash will be mushy but works quite well in soups, casseroles, and other dishes.
@jackielittle4498 Жыл бұрын
@@gardeningwithhoss mushy would be fine because for this cake recipe you peel it, dice it and cook it till it is soft and transparent. Remove it from the heat add 1/2 cup of sugar and tsp of vanilla, and let it cool. I wonder if I packed it raw in water, add the sugar and vanilla, how long I would process it for? I would need about a quart of the squash per recipe.

@@gardeningwithhoss I don’t care if they are mushy, because for my cake the first thing you do is dice them and boil them till they are transparent. So that would work just fine. How long do pressure can quarts for?
