Oh my goodness thank you! I have been searching on how to just get the vine which is absolutely beautiful. Most videos are for growing slips for actual sweet potatoes. I also appreciate you sharing the various varieties. The one you didn’t want, is the one I DO want lol!

They are super easy to propagate from cuttings. Just place cuttings in water or very wet soil in a pot or cup. In a week you will see new roots. In two weeks they are ready to go in the ground.

So, when do you plant these in West Texas? After the last frost? How many do you need to plant to cover a 3'X15" area at the edge of my driveway. How long do they last before they die out?
@chelseadidde5 жыл бұрын
I'd plant them after your last spring frost, and two or three plants would be more than enough to fill that area fairly quickly. If you're willing to wait a bit for it to fill up, you could use one or two. They will die with the first fall frost.

Wonder if I can plant these and they can CLIMB UP my wall in a mostly shaded area?

I planted the green sweet potato vine and two containers on my front porch and they took over both front flowerbeds. As I was removing them at the end of the summer I noticed humongous potatoes in the flower pots and in the ground where the vines have taken over. I’ve never noticed these The last couple of years that I planted these vines. Do you know if those are treated like bulbs? Would I be able to dig them and replant them next year?

Great video. I’m in KC as well, in a new home and planted 4 of the same variety and WOW!!! Those vines have completely covered my area and let ok beautiful. So…can the tubers be dug up overwintered and started again in the spring?
@brett15113 жыл бұрын
Yes, but its easier if you trim them and then put the cuttings in water, theyll grow roots and be good to go in spring
@rtbrain3 жыл бұрын
@@brett1511 gotcha. Have already taken cuttings And have multiples going.
@oonoo57243 жыл бұрын
As @Dank say; you can trim the vine, put it in water till it rooted & you have new plant. BUT this method will degrade plant quality overtime. You should start fresh from tuber to make slips after 3rd generation of "vines propagation". There are many tutorial to make new slip from whole sweet potato which is fairly easy to do
@rtbrain3 жыл бұрын
@@oonoo5724 great info. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I did take a bunch of cuttings and they rooted fabulously. I’ll be doing much more in the spring next year. Cheers

Hi, and thank you for the video. Could you explain please how these spread? Just wondering if they just keep the one root and grow out, or do they put down more roots as they spread? I have an unattractive bank that I would like to fill, should I plant this at the top, will it tumble down the bank, or at the bottom, for it to climb the bank!? TIA
@chelseadidde5 жыл бұрын
They do put down roots as they spread (if there's soil available). I'd suggest planting at the top so it tumbles down!

@@steve9021oh I read that they are perennial in zone 11, but if you live somewhere that doesn't get hard frost you can dig up the tubers and store in a shed till next spring like you would dahlias when you are in a zone too cold to leave them in the ground.

I loved my sweet potato vines last year. They are so easy to manage and I will be planting more this year. What are some tips to cut weed growth? My garden is really hard to manage with tough crab grass growing everywhere. I haven't had any success getting rid of the crab grass and it's awful.
