I was told by my father that if you want to determine the gender of the papaya seed then all you have to do is soak the seeds in the water. The one that is floating is the male and those that sink to the bottom are female seeds. Hope this help

Is it the other way around? Only 3 seeds floated, I am guessing those are females

After watching your other video on growing papayas, I’m feeling the need to grow some. While living in Hawaii, they were never my favorite, even with lime, BUT, I remembered I loved green ones! They are like a vegetable. There’s a recipe of green papaya salad. The papaya is grated. The salad is very spicy… I think with red pepper flakes. You can also make a dish using coconut milk and curry. Ohh! I really want to plant some now. Thanks for the reminder. Aloha! 🍃🌸🍃

You used about a tablespoon of the water. What do you do with the remaining water/peroxide mix? Can you just mix some water with a few sprinkles of peroxide not to waste a full bottle of water?

I second your suggestion of growing the Mexican Papaya variety in Southern California. I have grown both varieties here in West L.A., it's just easier to grow the Mexican kind...plus the fruit are much larger! If one wants to see some wonderful looking Papaya plants, Take the Metro Blue Line to Long Beach from 7th/Metro Station. Once you get past the Vernon stop, you'll see so many of the houses along the tracks growing great looking, mature Papaya Plants that are loaded with fruit!

Sorry. Coming from Hawaii, Mexican papayas are in no comparison at all. The flavor, the sweetness, the inside flesh color. Everything.

Wow, it’s so cool to grow your own papaya out in backyard! I always learned something from you, didn’t know it only takes 2 years for a papaya seed to become fruit; they come in 3 sexes.....really looking forward to your next video of how papaya germinate! Last but not the least, agree with you about rain, guess I’m a whining baby as well, lol! Thanks for sharing your gardening knowledge with us!

I'm sure in some places that is true. I think it depends on the climate and when you plant it

Hi I live in the UK, I have been trying unsuccessfully to grow papaya from seeds, I follow several method including the one you demonstrated, I get them to grow but after 2 leaves they begin to curl up and die. At present I have several in a tray with a cover outside it is doing ok as the weather is fantastic at present. but how do i get it beyond the 2 leaves stage.

It's wetter in my Australian location now which is a tad north of Sydney in New South Wales because we're going through La Nina which is derived from the edge of a tropical monsoon system which flooded towns out up on the New South Wales/Queensland border,it has been cooler than normal at about 20-30°C (68-86°F) but the tropical plants like that much better than the 42°C (108°F) days we had on the very last weekend of Spring this November where we got the westerly winds which blew the heat in from the desert. Yes, California is probably more like Nyngan which is in the central West of New South Wales which has a Steppe or a hot semi arid (BSh) climate (I know that San Diego has a colder semi arid BSk climate) so it's less humid than our.humid subtropical climate, someone who I went to school with who was from Nyngan complained about the humidity in my area,my dad comes from where Paul Hogan used to live & it's a bit wetter & more humid in the rainforest areas there, like in the gullies where the humidity is trapped. I skip the hydrogen peroxide step & just soak them in water until they float to the bottom then I throw out the floaters then I plant the good seeds. Yes,you need about 1 male to 10 female plants !

Hello, I have a question, probably stupid. If i use seeds from a store bought papaya and grow those seeds there's no way to know the gender before seeing the flowers? And moreover, all the seed from the same papaya are of the same gender or if I grow more of the same papaya I could get lucky? Thanks very much.

i have no problem growing papaya from seeds to fruit. there are a few breeds of papaya that have little to no seeds. they are sweet even then they get big. it's just there are little to no seeds in the fruit. if i water mine they grow and fruit fast. papaya likes of lot of water, some fertilizer. we have some growing wild. they are not bad. best tasting is the sunrise and sunset papaya. it's sweet and the fruit inside is red. thinking to buy the dwarf papaya. no need for long poles. yet the taller papaya fruits are sweeter.

Check out Aloha seeds for papaya seeds. Many varieties, some with high percentage hermaphrodite. I had high percentage germination in ground in August. Dig in a ton of Dry Stall (pumice from feed store for horse stalls) to improve drainage in the rain.

it's said that you can look at a young tree (~3 weeks?) and if the tree has one long central root, it's a male. short central root and bushy young baby roots around is a female.
