I remember my dad planting a vine when I was a kid growing up in Melbourne. It grew like a weed and ended up covering several meters of mesh. I don't recall it being difficult to grow and we had plenty of fruit in the summers. Aussies will have it over pavlova or ice cream. I liked it scooped into freshly squeezed orange juice. Funny memory, I recall cutting into a fresh off the vine fruit and the skin being so tough, the knife slipped and went straight through my hand. Still like them regardless.

I am in South Florida and I have the passion fruit passiflora growing on my fence , the fruit if picked off the vine is slightly sour ..on the other hand if it is to fall off the vine on to the ground then it is as sweet as sugar , the ones that fall off the vine have a different flavor to them sweeter with no sour .

What a gorgeous plant! I recently noticed that in my city, Madrid, they seem to grow really well because i have seen a ton of houses with HUGE bushes of passion flower filled with blooms and fruits in their gardens, which amazes me, because in winter we can get pretty cold here! And the flowers smell so delicious…fresh but full at the some time. Amazing plant

Brad I grew these in the tropics and you can make a beverage with this. You just put the seeds in the blender with sugar and water and later you add some ice. It is good to lower high blood pressure. Very effective too. So try it and let me know how you like the beverage. Thanks for sharing : )

The passionfruit you were originally referring to is indeed edible, but some people don't like the flavor. The edulis species, the one you're eating, is considered better-tasting. It is not as hardy, however, according to my reading.

So did you grow any fruit off these plants? I have been using fruit from local fruit markets and I'm hoping they grow fruit. I bought some strawberry guava,gooseberry and pepino bushes off nursery cos they don't seek these fruits around here and I know if its bought from nursery it will defo produce fruit. I have some passion fruit seeds I. Wet paper towel in a plastic see through container with glad wrap on too making a lil green house and its worked great :) can't wait to see if it works.

Avril Lategan roots are sensitive to transplanting. your better off planting seeds in individual pots that can go directly to soil. or like he said get rid of the slow growing ones so the stronger plants get all the nutrients

I want to grow passionflower (passiflora incarnata) and make tea from it, but will that plant also produce fruits? Also, if I'm going to plant it for making tea, can I cut and dry the whole plant or just the flowers? Thank you!
@austinhageman74404 жыл бұрын
(Old comment, but I'm replying anyway to hopefully help others!) Great idea! Passiflora incarnata is soo helpful in slowing down the mind and body, very useful for anxiety, sleep, and even spiritual practice. I can't speak to the fruits part of your question (although I believe it should), however all parts of the vine are useful in making tea and extracts (and even smoking 😏)! Speaking from experience, as I have personally only used the dried leaves and stems. I'm growing it myself this year in order to experiment with the flowers, which I am hoping will provide an even better (and hopefully tastier 🤞) experience. I would recommend for everyone to try working with this plant, as long as you aren't taking any prescription medications with which it could interact. Bless!

I lived in Puerto Rico and passion fruit was quite common. Usually the seeds are diluted in water to make a juice…they are put in a blender with some sugar seeds and all and then need to be strained through a sieve … makes great strong tasty drink… the British make a cocktail called Porn Star that has passion fruit juice, vanilla vodka simple syrup and champagne. It’s quite tasty. PS my seeds grew well without soaking…I laid them on some wax paper to dry them before planing them and like yours most of them sprouted.

Well done Brad, your seedlings are looking really strong and healthy. Given how successful you were, maybe if you do it again you might want to consider growing on a few extra plants to sell or give away to people in your local area. You were looking for a word to describe the taste of passion fruit. In my experience I'd say it has a sweet, vanilla taste and, as you nearly said, the flavour is very intense.

I have a question about passion fruits in general and maybe multiple people can help with this. With fruits like mangos (which I am currently growing two healthy plants from seed for the root stock for grafting later) I know that store bought fruits have been so over-hybridized, that the likelihood of having an edible plant that produces acceptably tasty fruit is slim to none. I want to know about these less conventional fruits like passion fruit and dragonfruit (which I also have successfully growing of both red and white varieties). Will they produce fruit ultimately from the seeds of a store-bought fruit? Or can I expect the same outcome as my mango plants? Any help would be fantastic.
@BradsGreenhouse10 жыл бұрын
James Cleary valid question, I would think that less mainstream fruits that come from areas outside |North America should be ok but cant say for sure. I had to stop growing this plant in my greenhouse. Each vine grew about 2' a week once it got going and was grabing onto everything this summer.
@claudettefaglie9579 жыл бұрын
+James Cleary Passion fruit is usually grown in rows, and up on trellises, sort of like grapes. They plant rows, and rows of the same type. They need at least one other vine so they can cross-pollinate. I've never been able to get pollination from a single vine... no matter how many flowers it has. I expect that the passion fruit you buy at the store is grown this way too... so the seed would produce the exact type as the fruit you bought at the store. Just be sure to have at least two vines.
@mamarhondasworld71042 жыл бұрын
I only have one vine and got lots of fruit. I started mine from a cutting though. I just watched a video saying to hand pollinate the flowers of ones grown from seed. I just ordered some other varieties to try it. I love my passion fruit! ♡
