I grew patty pans in containers for a couple of years, but this year I put them in the ground. They have gone absolutely crazy. For sure the most productive squash I've ever grown.

They are far more productive growing in ground rather than in containers. This is an idea if you don't have a garden, you can still get some in containers 🙂

I discovered manual (hand) pollination a couple of years and it drastically increased yield of patty pans. Taking the male organ and rubbing it on the female organ yielded a fruit almost 100% successfully. For whatever reason, leaving pollination strictly to the bees, doesn't work as well with patty pans in my experience.
@Jenniferjimsmoving Жыл бұрын
This is great i love being able to see what others have to say , and i just need to double check to see if i am doing things right. Like cross pollinating, i use a tiny paint brush and use it on my starwberries. I never thought of just rubbing the patty pan suash flowers directly on male to female.

Can I grow them from seed in July? Is it too late to try?
@Liap Жыл бұрын
Hello, what climate are You in and what is the first frost date there? These plants need warm air and soil temperature.
@carolvile5584 Жыл бұрын
@@Liap I'm in the UK, it's summer (warm and wet) and they should have been planted last month. They will have to grow in the greenhouse, I could put containers outside o guess, but I have 4 dogs and there are pigeons and the slugs will get them wherever they are.
@Liap Жыл бұрын
@@carolvile5584 Well, I am not sure how much of the fruit You will be able to get until cold weather sets in. Even if You could prolong their growing season by taking them in the greenhouse, when days get shorter, squashes don't grow as well. They are sun and warmth loving plants 🌞 I mean, You definitely can try and see how much can You get from them, but don't expect too much. I tried to grow winter squash last year from second half of July and it just didn't grow well, August rainy weather and Spetember cold mornings... I harvested only one fruit, and even that one was not full size. If You want to try it, go for it. If You want to make sure You have yield of some kind, I'd grow something else, that You know You can still get nice harvest from 🙂 Good Luck! 🍀
@carolvile5584 Жыл бұрын
@@Liap thank you. The main reason I wanted to grow them is my diet is very limited and FODMAPs are a big problem, patty pan squash are very low FODMAP and I probably could eat them. Normally I grow tomatoes as the only thing the slugs don't eat, I haven't tried eating any this year, it's something that I need to test.
@Liap Жыл бұрын
@@carolvile5584 In that case, I think You've just answered Yourself. Go for it 🙂 Health is always worth a try. If I may suggest, also plant some early zucchini variety. Some early cultivars can produce first fruit 7 weeks after planting, so in greenhouse You could still get few harvests.

Why are you seeds blue? Is it because they are not organic and instead pre-treated seeds? That would more than likely affect the germination process. So, those using organic seeds may not expect same results...but will have organic food to eat in the end if they follow the organic method of growing food.
@Liap Жыл бұрын
Hello, yes these were pre-treated seeds, Against fungal diseases that could harm the seedlings. There are some varieties that I can only get from one seed seller, and if they are pre-treated, there is not much I can do about it. Though I am not making a big deal out of that. I mean If I have an option I buy regular non pre-treated seeds, but If they are the only option at the time, I can deal with that 🙂

Puting seeds in paper towels is a waist of seeds and time they would grow faster in a small dirt tray just stick them in pointy way down they shoot out of the dirt in less than a week
@Liap3 жыл бұрын
I would like to kindly disagree. Ofcourse you can just put the seeds into growing medium, but paper towel method will always be faster. Atleast that’s how it worked for me when I was comparing both methods. And if you use H2O2 paper towel method will be even faster due to easier access to oxygen. Another advantage of this method is that you have overall overview whether the seeds are germinating (especially when using old seeds) and this gives you advantage to replace the seeds or choose the ones with the strongest roots. When you put them in soil, you don’t see any od this. I grow a lot of plants, sometimes I use this method sometimes I don’t. It is personal preference and definitely not a waste of time and absolutely not waste of seeds. Also, some seeds are prone to rot in soil, that is also a time to shine for paper towel method. Thank you for Your feedback and opinion 🙂
@petedonaghue58493 жыл бұрын
There is more nutrients in dirt and space for the roots to and u even proved it's more waist full because u don't grow all the seeds if u grow more than one plant u u would want to just put them in dirt
@Liap3 жыл бұрын
@@petedonaghue5849 seeds don’t need nutrients to germinate, they need hydrogen and oxygen. I germinate all the peppers i grow with this method because it cuts the germination time significantly. The smaller the seeds, the better to use paper towel method. I am sure you will find some exceptions, but i tried this so many times. If i didn’t why would I still use this method? Why don’t I use it for all the seeds I grow? Because some seeds have Good germination rate and time that the difference would be small. But I still do from time to time, especially when I germinate old seeds that would otherwise rot in soil.
