Thanks, just one question- What will happen if I cut of the main stem? I wish it was more bushy
@lyzeesl1fehacks3 жыл бұрын
@@katarinakovacev2318 he rarely replies .. annoying. Keep cutting the ends of the slender stems it will promote new growth .. never cut the mother stem, this is why it’s called the Mother stem, it is the main growing mechanism for the whole plant. Good luck!

For all things plants I always search your videos first to see if you’ve covered the topic from insects/fungus issues to propagating succulents and more I ALWAYS check yours first! Your videos are short, informative and don’t include the long drawn out intro/outro most others entail. one thing that you forgot to mention is that if you get any sap on your skin wash it off right away and don't touch your face any where because it is like acid it will burn even your eye and if you do get some of it near your eye go to the ER. I know because I had to go to the Hospital right away.

Thank you very much. I just got some cuttings today of this cactus and the night blooming orchid cactus. I couldn't remember how the gardener who gave them to me told me how to plant them (because he gave me so many cuttings of all kinds of plants). This video was very helpful. Direct, concise, and very informative. Thank you from a new subscriber!

Your huge mother plant is far from huge. The pencil plant is a TREE that can grow to forty feet high. Not knowing this, thinking it was only a shrub, I planted one in my yard. It now has a trunk that's about ten inches thick even though I started severely pruning it when it got to around eight feet high. Its wood is stringy and sappy, so it's difficult to cut. I've been debating whether or not to kill it because it's growing too close to a retaining wall. Update: I finally cut it down, but left a stump about a foot tall to see what happens. You MUST wear gloves and have your skin covered because the toxic sap comes dripping all over the place with even small breaks. The stump started growing back in short shoots that circled all the way around the cut, and looked pretty interesting that way, but then it died all of a sudden a month or two later. Lots of the pencils fell all over the place when I cut it which I cleaned up, but some I missed. I had some pots with aloe vera in them close by and a new pencil plant started growing out of one--a 12" pot that was crowded with aloe vera. A couple nights ago I separated the pencil plant from the aloe vera. It had a fairly long root system circling the bottom of the pot. I repotted it in an air pot and hope it'll grow tall. It was actually a very cool unique addition to my landscape when the original tree had grown tall. The pencil clusters gets a rather all-around bushy shape when it gets off the ground. I moved it in its air pot from my front porch today to a spot close to a shaded area. I noticed that it looked better there with the dark background behind it.

I started growing this pencil plant from a cutting just like you describe, but I didn't know if it was going to work, I did as an experiment. I am so glad I saw your video, now I know the proper frecuency to water this plant , so far it's doing good. One question: How long it take to get big like the one you got your cutting from? That plant is big! Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful.

Hi! 😊 Thank you for your video, i learned a few things. I have a 7 feet tall pencil cactus that has grown tall but not a lot of branches. The branches are only 1-2 feet long. Parts of the trunk (1-2 feet) has no branches at all. I would like to make it grow more thick like a bush. It doesn't grow anymore branches at the bottom and in the middle. It's only growing upwards really fast and it's almost touching the ceiling. Only new branches grows like a crown at the top. If i cut all the tips of every branches bottom to top of the tree, will it grow more small branches on them? I hesitate to cut the tips of the branches especially at the bottom and in the middle because I'm not sure if it's going to grow thicker... some branches at the bottom even dried this winter. What do you think? Any other advice to make it thicker ? Thank you very much for your advice.

Hi, I really appreciate for the information and I have a quick question. Today, my son got a milk bush’s sap on his face. So I wiped it with some water quickly. I didn’t WASH WASH it though. Then 2 hours later the spot went red little bit. I don’t think he feels it’s hot and rash but I’m so worried. Is there any medicines or natural treatments to heal or cool down? Thanks in advance and look forward to your response.

I can tell you, you have to be very careful around this plant, not to get the sap transferred somehow to your eyes. I went to the ER with the most incredible pain, I picked some sap up off my shears and rubbed my eye. Not only was it painful, but it was very disorienting. They had to flush my eyes with running water for about an hour While I've laid there screaming! Finally I suggested they give me an Ativan to shut me up! It's a mistake I will never, Never, repeat!

If you could get a big cutting, just trim off the extra stems. It will also root as well as the small one. That way, you don't have to wait a long time for it to grow big. I had done a 2 feet tall cutting successfully.

My pencil cactus is growing fine but is in a small ceramic pot.. now the problem is it's yellowish green in colour unlike yours.. has bulbs popping over the top soil.. and I can see a crack in the pot too. Does that mean it's root bound and needs repotting in a bigger pot? Kindly answer.
