The right mix for the water crystals is 1 teaspoon per 750 mL of water. It will not suffocate the plant if you mix the water crystals with coconut coir or something similar.

Try tissue culture instead, which is a widely used commercial cloning technique. Though you certainly don't use sodium polyacrylate, its generally done with Agar.

This would be incredibly useful for transportation of plants to sell at storefronts. Why chop down a plant, package it, then transport it when you could instead transport the plant still alive with a hydroponic gel?

What about modify the jelly Tec and mash up solid mass to a rough mush to allow oxygen threw but test the growing in such form, seems a decent idea for more desert areas with high evaporation and jellypoincs sounds cool. ✌️😎

im just experimenting with this after accidently puting too much hydrogel in with a couple of seeds , i left them and they grew through the gel and seemed healthier than when i start them in soil i had no nutrients in mine . its cool coz you can see what the root is doing whereas under soil you have to guess

Hi Hoocho, Don’t give up on the gel if you like experiments and growing plants. In the UK, Grow Gel pots were all the rage with gardeners back in the 70’s; so the idea must still be a valid one today. Try goggling “NuGel - Gel2Root”: As should become apparent quickly, it was eventually banned from sale in the UK. Not sure why but it might of simply contained some chemical or growth hormone on the EU hit list, or it might have been a more serious reason, like it encouraged the growth of a harmful bacteria if used improperly. (Who knows? It’s only a guess on my part). The main point is that back then, it was never intended for long term use as a seed starter or growing medium per se, it was simply used as a rooting medium. My farther loved the gel pots, as he could take them on his travels and take soft cuttings from anywhere and we as kids loved them, as they were small clear pots that enabled you to see the roots growing; so you also knew when to plant the plants. The main advantages, were that the soft cuttings went straight into the gel so didn’t dehydrate; plants came out of the gel easily with the root system intact and could then be put straight into the ground, without even having to rinse them.

Don't know how I ended up here but this method is great for cloning. Throw some of your jelly in the bottom of a zip lock and chuck your clone in. Spray every other day

When you’re sprouting seeds, you don’t need any light at all until they have sprouted

You should have ideally used distilled water (which had no algae or algae spores in it at all). And an aquarium bubbler would help to put oxygen into the gel.

PS I always make my crystals soak in water in a 5 gallon bucket then I take a sieve and take out the crystals that drains out all the excess water then I just pop a little on it till the next time I need to use some

You nailed it as soon as you mentioned oxygen exchange. It is not so much of a problem because plants will bring oxygen down from their leaves, but I would not want to transition plants not adapted to biological soil. Interesting product nevertheless, and might be useful in future. Thanks.

some seeds wont sprout if it isnt dark, so blasting full power on unpopped seeds might be not the best idea, roots do not like light they shrivle all up so covering the box or painting it black would improve on that situation, and lastly the gel you could try to make a normal solution of your nutrient mix it with the gel and during "hardening" you pump it with an airstone full of air(to create small airpockets), so that the roots have acces to oxygen whis is essential for survival. kind regards from germany and keep on experimenting. i´d suggest to look up high pressure aeroponics, that might be for you.

would you consider hydrating one of those polyacrylamide cubes / chunks and letting it stand under an upturned glass on a dish with a single seed stuck into it? Ambient light only, no high intensity lighting... maybe something easy like basil?

I agree. The total volume decreased making me think the mixture was being dehydrated. Perhaps watering this daily would provide enough water for the crystals and seedlings.

Have you tried that in a black bucket and using sprouted plants from a rockwool cube? Perhaps more of a deep water culture type grow?...

You have to mix the gel with soil as if it were pellets or seeds.

Add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the gel, it breaks down into water and oxygen for the plant to uptake, and it also helps keep unwanted microorganisms like bacteria and mold from growing on the gel.

Cover the top layer in coconut husk or KB . It blocks the UV and you can also put a half a teaspoon of Bleach into the mix at first and the Gel is more than enough food to feed your plant with no extra feeding. You will see if you do get mold you did not add the Potassium Sorbet into your mix which is critical for any Gelatin grow . When your plants flower you can add some blossoming boosters but it will make your mix less gel like every time you do it and I have found the Gel alone feed a plant from life through death. The mold will not grow with a bit of Sorbet in the mix and you can add more if you see signs of the stuff growing if it comes up down the road. I have kept one plant alive through 7 harvest in a gelatin pot. I did mix the gel with 30% Fox Farm soil and it has grown now for years past the first cutting . What was at first a joke and experiment has produced well over 10 pounds of super healthy plant. And it just keeps growing back every time I cut it off and put it back under the lights . It is not supposed to be able to do this and I believe it is due to the Gel . It just keeps growing back bigger and better than the time before. ITS HUGE now and I have had to put it into 10 gallons of gel mix. I stopped mixing it with soil altogether and add a little new gel about 1 time a year. It really is a wild way to grow.

pink salt I actually use that one step liquid from Bunnings I use the red bottle “N.k. Plus for fruit and veg” works beautifully on my Kratky leafy greens and grew a corn plant all the way to flowering but then the bottle kept falling over

Excellent experiment .....even if it did not work out exactly as you expected. I am always looking for something cheep (FREE) to use.....has anyone tried using just every day river sand for seeing plants. The sand is just there to hold seed and hold a little moister in for a bit. The food comes from the solution you use to water them daily............I can get 20 yards of sand free anytime......I am going to try it myself this weekend. I watched your other video about starting seed using Vermiculite and Perlite and that worked out great.....I am hoping the sand will enable me to get the seeds started and then reuse it over and over again.

does this stuff promote fungus growth also? because I have tried buying Giant Sequoia from this place and they always deliver it with the roots in jelly bareroot tree , but all the trees I have planted died within a year or two, never really grew much to begin with. I think it creates root rot in Giant Sequoia at least

They need air. Do a kratkey system, sprout them first then set the roots on top leaving space for air roots.

How about you try this again with Orbeez? As individual balls opposed to a gelatin you should very likely get better oxygen circulation. If the seeds don't germinate, maybe try seedlings?

Could it be that your solution was too clear, transparent? Plants aren't supposed to get light to the roots. I'm thinking of doing a similar experiment, but with colored gel, probably red, to keep UV rays from the roots.

I was watching your video I found it quite interesting I've been pondering why it was unsuccessful I was thinking if you revisit this method and maybe you could incorporate air pruning with the cracky method as well as along the routes to reach the water similar to a hydroponic system with the gel maybe have a air bubbler the gel. perhaps maybe black it out like people do with ant farms and once the plants take root in the gel you can you can do an unreveal I do hope you revisit this idea. failures are just future successes.

Love your videos. :) You should have some more success using gel balls so there is pockets of air between the roots. Try covering the seeds while they shoot. They like it better as they're supposed to be "under ground". Can you cover the base and the top (somehow idk) when under lights as it will eliminate more algae but still enable you to open it up to see the root growth?

Had some fun here. I played your video at 1/2 speed. You sound STONED! LOL You forgot to drain off excess water. Starting them in that is OK. Growing them in that might not be. I tried it with a few lettuce seeds. They sprouted in 1/2 the time! When they get bigger I will transplant them into potting mix. Or a SOCK? Knee high?

Additionally, some seeds require light to germinate. Maybe fill container with dirt, add a layer on top, then place seeds on/in the hydrogel.

Seats do not need anything besides a little bit of water and warm to grow they have everything they need inside the seed nature designs things play perfectly maybe try again without nutrients. And if that doesn’t work try just putting them in the ground. Lol where they were meant to grow. It’s also DARK when they are in the ground.
