My wildlife allotment plot is like the edge of a woodland with tall trees providing shade for 2/3 of the plot. I’m using rough and ready home made woodland floor mulch to cover the seed potatoes like the Ruth Stout method. This is because I’m trying to gradually convert to the no dig method using only home made compost.
Thanks for watching

Ruth's a legend. We tried her technique last year on hard pan dirt. Got potatoes and it busted up the dirt nicely. Her methods is amazing for moisture retention as well which could work against us here but super fun to try !! Compost looks great, Jim Kovaleski swears by rough much, macroorganisms love it, and much cleaner crops. Just love the wildlife pond and Tulips !! Have a great Easter weekend Mark!! Cheers Jason and Colleen 🌱🌱🌱

Good luck with the potatoes, it's great to try new things, I'm sure they will work out fine. I just bunged my first earlies quickly in holes this year so we will see. Cheers

I did this last year and it worked out so well I'm doing it again. Two things to watch out for: 1. The cover needs to be much more, particularly the main crop ones. I had rats dig up the seed potatoes but we've got a lot on our site so you may get away with it. 2. As the spuds develop, they will grow around twigs and bits of wood so you will have some that look like something has got into them. They'll be fine and the skin will grow around the objects but will look unsightly. I just cut around those bits when I peeled them and the spuds were fine.
