I had a beautiful blue/purple streptpcarpus plant on my mostly shady deck from May through The beginning of November here in Massachusetts zone 6. I wish I had thought to save the seeds as it was the perfect plant and I would love to have more next year.

This question is unrelated but I’m interested in your opinion on water storing granules. “SwellGel” is marketed as a water saving product and also claims various benefits to garden soil and plants. You’re supposed to put it in your soil before watering, and it’ll soak up excess water and supposedly release it again as your plants require it. Are the benefits of these granules a myth? Is it actually a good way to save water, and is it good for plants?

Generically these are called hydrogels. Some say they hold the water and don't release it to plants. A small experiment I did a while ago showed they keep plants alive longer than soil without them. They are safe to use, but eventually decompose to release polyacrylamide which is a known carcinogen. For that reason alone I would not use them.

I joined this society: gesneriadsociety.org/ They have a long list of seeds - both species and hybrids and they are $3 a pack ($US).

Wow you said small but i still wasnt ready for how teeeeeny the seeds would be! Can you talk about your lighting for the streps? I dont have a good window for my 2 streps i just bought so i bought a plant led grow light off Amazon. Says it's full spectrum, 4 adjustable brightnesses and a timer. The plants i have are very small right now, in 2.5" pots. I got a purple panda and a full moon. Wanted grape ice but the nursery doesnt carry that color. How long do you think it takes for them to be a decent size? Going to watch your other strep video rn. 😊

You said put them under light after sprouting, but you didn't tell us where to put them before that. In a dark closet? Little bit of light? You lost me.

Before that it does not matter. I usually have them at the edge of a plant stand so they some light.
