We’re in Zone 8. My Mother (RIP) was the Queen of Sweet Peas. She always planted them on Washington’s Birthday. But my father prepared her Sweet Pea beds in the Autumn before…deep and rich. One year she heard a good idea to plant the seeds well-spaced, as she direct-sewed them. She dropped each seed into an ice cube tray, filled them with water, and put them in the freezer. Her plan was to plant the ice cubes side-by-side in the trench. It was a great idea to try until I came home from grade school and made a pitcher of KoolAid for dinner. 😂😂😂😂

I enjoyed your thoughts here on sweet peas, I bought six different varieties and have lots of choices where to plant them so now with your help I know exactly where they are going so they dont get scorched by the sun, thank you.

When I covered my seeds last year, they did not germinate when I covered them. I had to start them over too late, but the second time I didn't and they germinated within 3 days.

Great timing on this video, I just bought some sweet pea seeds and I've never tried growing them before! Definitely going to follow your tips and get them started as soon as they arrive. My last frost is a similar date to yours (4b MN), but being a little further north I think we have a more gradual warm up most years, so hopefully that gives them enough time to get established.

I starts my sweet peas here in uk in autumn and I put them outside without protection. I notice they are strong and bigger roots than if I put them in my greenhouse.

First time growing sweet peas, so this was so informative thank you so much! One question do you pinch them back more than once and is there a general guideline of how much you should pinch back?

So helpful, thank you! I'm finding your "seed tips" videos SO SO helpful - finally got a booklet for note taking! LOL Might you consider doing a video on what other cold loving plants/seeds YOU plant out late winter? There isn't much info in one place for those of us growing in COLDer climates. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with us.❤

Thank you so much for the video! I started my sweet peas a few weeks ago and will out them out next weekend. I'm in zone 6b. I wasn't sure if I needed to harden them off since they are cold hardy so thanks for that tip. Wish me luck 🤞

I agree on the afternoon shade. I stuck them in front of a section of worn out vintage picket fence. Looks cute and the fence offers them some protection from the heat of the afternoon sun

I garden in zone 6B and started my sweet peas on January 28th using Farmer Bailey's (Ardelia Farm & Company) instructions to grow them slow and cold. They have been up and out in the full sun and cold weather for the last two weeks in root trainers...seems harsh, but so far so good. I do bring them in when temps get below 35 degrees at night, but they stay in an unheated room and then outside during the day. Farmer Bailey says to plant out when daffodils emerge, so in March if I can work the soil, in they'll go...fingers crossed.

I just planted my seeds directly in a container with an obelisk on my deck May 1 last year and they did great. No hardening off needed. I did presoak them 24 hrs before planting out. When it got hot out I moved them to a shadier spot. I did grow the Elegant Sweet Peas. They were nice shades but I did not find them very scented. I'm just a home gardener. Bonny zone 5b

I am in zone 5b in Wisconsin. Am I too late for starting indoors and how does one harden off seedlings when it's winter? #curioushomegardener
@PepperHarrow
@PepperHarrow Жыл бұрын
It’s not too late to start them. To harden off, you have to have a small cold frame to start to harden them off, or you can pick a few days in a row that will be consecutively above freezing to start the process. Just 1 hour the first day and work up from there

I've never had any luck with sweet peas! After watching your video, I feel ready to give them another try. I live in the Willamette Vally in Oregon (zone 10) - we just had our last frost about 3 weeks ago. (very late for us) Do you think it's too late to give them (another!) try this year? I've got a great spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. BTW - your presentation is charming! I want to be your "new best friend!"

How low temp can sweet peas handle outside? I’m in a different zone so wondering what temp lows you are looking to be above or at before you plant out. Thanks the video was so informative! I’m trying them out for the first time this year so this video is perfect!

I’m not sure how much cold they can take. I’m sure you can Google it. I usually strictly go by date and do the covering/uncovering for them. They’re pretty tough!
