Great video, thank you! I'm originally from the tropics and missing sweet potato green (stir fried with garlic). I tried growing sweet potato last year with no success (even though I live in the SE). I also soaked tubers in water but didn't cut them in half. Next time I'll follow your advice and hope they'll produce a lot more slips and leaves :).

john smith 😂 I don’t think my gardening comes anywhere close to his standard of cooking, nor my use of colourful language! But, I do like to try and think outside the box when it comes to gardening, try new things, and with climate change, altering our seasons, we need to be open to growing different vegetables and fruit. We are able to get hold of more interesting plants now, compared to 10 or 20 years ago, so I do feel we should take advantage of that! Thanks for your comment. All the best. Chris

Great Vid, thank you yes growing sweet potato slips is actually very easy, the leaves are great in salads. The are also great for Tortoises, Torts often suffer from Vitamin A deficiency, Sweet Potato leaves are very high in Vitamin A. Might be great to mention pet benefits for growing plants indoors in the UK, to reach more audience 😉 Also, I have have success growing shop bought non organic Sweet Potatoes too 😄

Hey how's your sweet potato plant doing? Did you cut it in half? I have a store bought sweet potato plant basically at the same stage yours was at last year! I've just broken off the tall vine with leaves placed Into glass of water. The potato itself has tons of roots coming out of the bottom! Any idea what to do with it now? Should I grow outdoors in UK soil or indoors in a tub? How long does it take until harvest? Do you ever get new tubers when you harvest?

I have that morning glory that I keep cutting back so now I have bought seeds for other morning glories (that are heirloom) and also planted hyacinth bean vines that were given to me and want to plant scarlet emperor (similar to runner except semi perennial if I could only find the seeds!) so that the hummingbirds will have a replacement for the morning glory i am trying to purge

Very well explained and clearly demonstrated, thank you. Like you, my overwintered cuttings had high mortality and I wonder if we should propagate specifically from the survivors for useful increased hardiness in future seasons. Another thought for our northern climes is to grow in black containers that aren’t too big and so increase the growing medium temperature. I’m not sure if you mentioned that any shop bought potatoes are better if organic and hopefully not treated with sprouting inhibitors.
@gotropicaluk83625 жыл бұрын
Dalesman I’m all for seed saving and plant propagation from plants that do well in our climate. I do think each generation of seed will have better growing qualities to suite the climate that it has been grown in. My sweet potato’s did really well this year, planted through black plastic. Really nice size tubers. Unfortunately they were attacked by wire worm!🙈 which make lots of little holes. I took cuttings from the plants and so have potted up about 14 plants for next year. Not sure what the variety is but they seem to do well in Suffolk. This years sweet potato harvest is one of my recent videos. Regards. Chris

Buy organic if you can , if you buy from supermarkets they have been sprayed with inhibitor to stop shoot growth, you can get round this by soaking the tuber for two or three days and changing the water a few times, I always use spring water not tap water.

Thanks for your informative video. I'm a new learner wanting to grow sweet potatoes. Do you plant your sweet potatoes outside in a garden bed in the summer? When do you plant them out and when do they mature for harvesting? I live in a cool/cold climate (snows in winter) so I hope I can grow sweet potatoes. It's challenging growing watermelon in my area @ times. Don't have a greenhouse yet. 😮

D E they are planted out in my area around the middle of may, when soil temps are about 17c. They love the heat! So the warmer your summer the better!
