I am addressing the pros of growing sweet potatoes in containers especially for urban gardeners and those of us who have limited space for growing. This is a DIY that includes planting and how I mix the soil.

I discovered 2 years ago that the leaves are edible and very nutritious. They taste almost like spinach but uniquely so. So I mix them with spinach and what a treat or all by themselves. So I planted my potatoes 🥔 already and can’t wait for the leaves instead of the potatoes.☮️😂

FYI white potatoes are not poisonous unless they have green on the skins. I have eaten them many times and so do my many inaws who are Irish. Quote: Raw potatoes are high in resistant starch, which has been linked to better blood sugar, enhanced insulin sensitivity, increased feelings of fullness and improved digestive health....

Can’t wait to see what they are like at harvest! I’ve just started growing my Taiwan sweet potato in a container. Unfortunately I live in an apartment so I can only grow it on my balcony... hope I will get something from it. How often should I water them? I live in a tropical climate so it’s pretty hot right now where I am
@bethrivera867
@bethrivera867 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Taiwan sweet potatoes but I read an article about Japanese sweet potatoes which said you should wait until the top 1 or 2 inches is dry before watering again. I have zero experience with them though so I can't say how true that is. I'd suggest looking up their care on google and see what the general consensus is

That's cool that you can leave the tubers in the ground the ground for 2-3 months afetr they are mature and they get sweeter and saty fresh all winter ( I have 1000 NC 531 slips coming they grow in bushes not vines) They say sweet potatoes need boron 1) boron pervents rot 2) boron helsp transport sugars from leaves to tubers boron can be added to soil AND /OR sprayed on leaves every 3 weeks or so but just use a tiney amount per application

Nice. I made my soil very similar to yours. the only thing I do different is put a light layer of soil that is more nitrogen for the green growth. I think it makes the leaves taste better. Love your videos Wendi. Thank you. BTW, I need info about garlic. Specifically when to harvest. I will look in your videos for one. I am still having a hard time getting bitter melon seeds to start. What is the best soil ingredients for that? Maybe that is where I am having trouble.

I wonder if you could help me correct my latest gardening disaster. I chose to plant “Bunch” Porto Rico sweet potato’s in Southern California. April 25, I started one slips each in ten Home Depot 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom. I mixed purchased topsoil with about 25% compost (manure) mixed in. There was excellent drainage, and after 2 weeks of extra water, I watered them once weekly. I allowed them to grow for 110 days, but I stopped watering them the last 3 weeks. I don’t remember where I read that this was advised. I was very excited on my day 110 harvest, but the actual harvest was very disappointing! I yielded between 10 and 20 potatoes per bucket, but they were approximately carrot sized. Mostly tiny carrot sized! Are 5 gallon buckets too small for this crop? Was that a mistake to stop watering at the end? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thank You,

Hello Wendi! This is my 2nd time ever growing a garden. 1st time was over a decade ago, so a newbie here. Question: My sweet potatoe just sprouted slips, I know I'm behind, but how badly behind am I? Should I just abandon the grow this year? I know sweet potatoes need a long growing period but I am also growing in So. Cal with a decent growing window. So, maybe I can get some production? I have no idea.

Hello, I'm trying to grow sweet-potato in a container like you, but I've noticed that one of the potatoes' vines are turning whitish, then yellow, then dark spots appears on the yellow ones, only to die at the end. Do you happen to know what could be the cause? I'm at loss at what to do about it, and I'm afraid I might lose them and can't find anything about it on internet. I have another container with a different species and it's doing great (only got some aphids I keep treating against).

You can grow your own slips, easily. Just get a sweet potato, place in a container with water. New plants will grow from the potato, when the new plants grow 6 to 7 inches, twist off, place in a separate container with water so they can grow their own individual root system.

I bought a sweet potato from the store, put half in a glass of water, it grew roots. Cut sweet potato in half and put it into a 5 gallon plastic tub with drainage & river rock to facilitate drainage. Turned the other half of sweet potato over into the water, it grew roots. Planted that half into the same potato container. Voile'......abot 15 lbs of sweet potatoes from one sweet potato. I refuse to grow & use potato slips. Too long, waste of time. And you can eat/saute/salad potato leaves....they are great! Like spinach! You get double duty on any kind of potato. But growing slips takes way too much time, when you can root the potato, throw it in potting soil or mulch.....and get more potatoes then with slips.

Your digestion will adapt if you start slow 😃. Same with raw regular potatoes , those are as toxic raw, as cooked (Solanine doesn't degrade when cooking), you always should make sure not to eat green or sprouting parts!.
@trumplostlol3007
@trumplostlol3007 3 жыл бұрын
@@imrevadasz4564 I didn't say it was toxic. Raw sweet potatoes' got something in it that will disrupt the balance of the microorganisms in our digestive systems. It is like if you drink 6 beers a day. Your digestive system will be disrupted. Even if you drink 6 beers everyday, your digestive system is still messed up. In fact, if you do it everyday, your digestive system will be totally messed up even if you stop drinking.
