Ha! Yes! 🙂 The potting-on advice at 3:10 about picking up seedlings by their leaves was something my late dad taught me when I was small. He said that lifting a very young plant by its leaves was like picking up a toddler by placing your hands under its arms. Safe, gentle and secure. Grabbing it by the stem was like picking up a child one-handed by the throat! 😲 Seriously, though: the explanation is that squeezing a flat leaf does relatively little harm; squishing the cylindrical stem can crush vital transport vessels and choke a young plant to death.

I tend to grow a selection of varieties each summer. Always like to try something new. But will definitely try and remember to share what I’m growing next spring. My family likes Black Krim and Paul Robeson to the point of them being a topic of dinner table debate. I also grow Kellogg's Breakfast, random colours of Vernisage, Pink Oxheart, Amish Paste, San Marzano, or Olpalkas, or anything that strikes my fancy. This year I have yellow pears because I got a free packet of seed. I do not generally have everything all in the same year mind you! Though if we start selling I might. Generally anything from Eastern Europe or Russia does remarkably well for me, and the Amish and Cornell varieties are pretty much selected for where I live.

@@GrowVeg Indeed that is one of the reasons I tried them. I am in one of those borderline zones where the weather is rather unpredictable in spring and autumn. With the russians I can put a temporary dome of sticks and plastic over the bed and they will survive unexpected snow and cold in spring, and when I put it back on in autumn they carry on with bearing through several frosts. I kept them indoors for a 2 or 3 weeks and now all three of them are in a grow bag in a very sunny spot at the bottom of the garden. Flourishing and tiny yellow flowers have appeared. But I don't know if they are bush tomatoes or vine tomatoes I am hoping they will just grab onto the brick wall by themselves but do you think I ought to put a few nails in the wall and tie some string to it? And is it time to add my high potassium fertiliser now I have seen the yellow flowers? Thank you for your time❤

You would need to tie the stems into their supports, as they don't cling on to supports like, say, beans do. So yes, string would be useful. I would also start adding the high potassium fertiliser now they are flowering too. Hopefully you'll get a good crop! :-)

Love your videos. I have a couple questions about fertilizing tomatoes. You said at first flower feed a high potassium fertilizer. Make a regular application. How often? Weekly? Every 2 weeks? Also, full strength or half? And can the fertilizer also contain phosphorus? I have a 0-10-10 that I'm thinking of using. Would this be ok? Thank you
@GrowVeg4 жыл бұрын
I buy a purpose-sold tomato fertiliser. It comes as a liquid, which you dilute with water then water on. This is usually applied once a fortnight, but I tend to feed weekly at half strength, just to avoid sudden peaks and troughs of nutrients. Follow the advice on the packet. The feed you have may be suitable. But tomato feeds also contain essential micro/trace nutrients as well, which are important for tomato health.

Thanks for another great video. Was feeling a bit sad, both my money makers and cherry seems a bit slow (only second time growing veg. Maybe i misremembered last year). I started earlier this year and they are only about 8" tall, maybe im just earlier and they need more sun, still indoors. But I have loads of onions out already, started between November and feb and a load of beets to go out so not bad, I need to find last year diary for dates.

I think your tomatoes are doing just fine to be that height already. There's still plenty of the growing season to come - they're doing great!

This year I'm only growing 3 varieties of indeterminate tomatoes: Cherokee Purple, which is one I've grown almost every year and which has a predictably wonderful flavor; San Marzano plum-type tomatoes, which I'm growing for the first time; and Gardener's Delight, a cherry tomato that I am growing for the first time. All are indeterminate and all are heirloom.

Great video...I started chocolate and yellow cherry tomato seeds in late Jan/early Feb and just placed an order for Tiny Tim dwarf tomato seeds.

Thanks for this. Can you share why you start them a together then transplant them - rather than seeding them straight into the pots you'd transplant into the garden from? It seems like an unnecessary step?
@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
They're started like this simply to save space, and because not all seeds will germinate. By starting them off somewhere else, when you come to transplant them you can then guarantee one plant per pot.

Cheers Frank! I'm based in the Cotswolds, which is around about USDA zone 8b. I've always been into gardening - my grandad sparked my interest from an early age. I helped him plant leeks and pick the beans - a great way to get youngsters curious and interested.

@@GrowVeg Thanks for the prompt reply. We missed driving by the Cotswolds last year. Went to Devonshire, Isle of Wright ,London and everyplace inbetween. My home zone is 9a which I guess is close enough to yours to copy whatever you are doing. Frank
