The first time I saw hydroponics and grow lights used was in the 1970's by the pot farmers in Washington state growing weed in their closets. I hadn't seen that before because I'm from California where people just grew outdoors. The marijuana farmers have always been on the forefront of hydroponics and grow lights. Whether or not you agree with the use of marijuana it's still worth picking those guys brains, they have this stuff down to a science.

As an experiment I took a couple "armpits" off of a tomato plant and just stuck them in plastic juice bottles. In there for over a month cuz I planned to put them in dirt but didn't have any at the time...no fertilizer. After finally planting them in a black plastic tote, these mater plants ended up huge! But I'm going to try water gardening next spring. Thanks for the awesome info!

I’m a Canadian senior who recently discovered Mike Vandez (I think). I’m just learning about this method, and am doing my research. We have bitterly cold winters here in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, -30c on average this winter, so I’m trying to figure out what I can grow inside for a food supply. Our cost of living and housing has become so overwhelming in Canada, that most of the seniors/disabled can’t afford a healthy diet. The problem is, we can’t afford even moderately priced online hydroponics courses to learn the nitty gritty either. Personally I’m scared to death; I am 5’2” and have shrunk to less than 100lbs. I’m terrified that if I don’t find an affordable healthy food source, I’ll just continue to deteriorate, so are a lot of my friends. We are far from alone. As Canadian seniors we can’t complain or we’ll be offered MAID for being too poor to eat properly ( something you should never know!) Thank you for sharing your actual food blend without taking a course. I have subscribed and will look up the other people you mentioned that you’ve learned from. If you could please share how to do everything on an alternative budget, so we can all afford to do this. So through this methodology we can afford greens and nutrients to help us survive. ❤️

Loving your videos since I found you in March. I javelin started 2 55 gallon hydroponic gardens. One has 2 banana peppers and they are doing great. I repurposed small coffeemate containers for pots. The other barrel has 3 varieties of cucumber and 1 cherry tomato. I have already harvested the first cluster of tomatoes and cucumbers just started to blossom this week. I followed your instructions except I star with water from my koi pond. I water everything with fish poop. I have had to add a couple gallons of water a couple of times but that came from the koi pond too. I have two more barrels to start soon. Can't wait. Thank you so much this has been a lot of fun. Hope it holds up in florida heat.

Try placing plastic tub sandwiched between straw bales or wrap in burlap, so sun doesn’t degrade as fast the plastic but it helps keep water from getting too heated.

In hydroponics, growers are working with warm water. Compared to cooler water, warm water doesn’t hold as much oxygen, and root and bacterial respiration occurs at a higher rate. Plant pathologists have found that pathogens such as Pythium are more likely to start affecting roots when oxygen levels are low.

Thanks for this! I saw your video a few weeks ago, with the tote on your patio. I live in an apartment with a patio that gets morning sun, but is all shade after about 12. I've struggled growing in pots. I started researching this method and have started ordering supplies. Now to get my hands on a drill, to drill the holes... 😜 This was really helpful! I'm ordering the clay beads that you showed, instead of the rockwool grow cubes that another video recommended. That way I can start my seeds in dirt, like I normally would. Thanks for the tip about rain. I have a covered patio but this is good to know, so I can pull the totes in closer to the door to avoid the added water.

Daniel, the solution to the water problem outside, if you want to leave your plants uncovered, is simple: Use a flat lid tub for your container and measure the lid recess, from the rim of the lid, to the “flat” part of the lid where you cut your 2 inch hole (for the 2 inch net cup to go into). Then, make a collar to go around the hole, from a length of 2 inch PVC pipe. Make your off cut of pipe (the collar), ¼ to ½ inch longer than the recess depth you measured for the lid and then, when you have sanded and cleaned the collar and the plastic and around you net cup hole, glue the collar you have just made over your net cup hole. Given 2” PVC pipe has an internal diameter of 2”, there is ample material to glue the collar and lid together to get a strong join. The net pot also, fits easily into it the collar when finished. Hope this helps.

Quick tip: A few yrs back, my son tried "watering" my hydroponic lettuce once and with the results I saw in 3 days from this 1 'mistake' he thought he made bc of my reaction, he woke me up on the 3rd day jumping on my bed saying, "I'm cutting your lettuce for breakfast!" Obviously I woke right up, but when we looked, the lettuce was 3-4x's the size it was! Seriously, I'd NEVER seen something SOO CRAZY! All he did, was took my spray bottle I feed seedlings with. The spray bottle is set on "spray" bc I simply stream the water into the cups (kratky method) and I aerated my plants while I was waiting for my pump. My plants grew quicker than shipping arrived! While, to the avid hydroponics person would say something against this, I've used this kratly method, streaming the water every 24-48hrs- RELIGIOUSLY, for the past 5yrs. I use this stream method with cutting I put in water to propagate, which speeds up the rooting process even tho in changing the water every 48-72 hrs, the EXTRA EXTRA oxygen given, allows the plant to soak up extra oxygen. Just give it a try and you WON'T be sorry. Next time you want to propagate some plant you have, just don't want to go buy seedlings again, simply chop a top piece, stick it into a cup of water, WAIT 24-48hrs the 1st time, that way the plant can acclimate. Then, stream that spray bottle with like 15-20 "streamed squirts" (If it's a small cup, 16 oz or under) For a larger cup/Mason jar, spray between 25-35 "streamed squirts" then sit back and watch the next 72 hrs... Tell me you don't see a difference! you're welcome

How about drilling a overflow hole in the side of the outside bucket so when it rains it won't drown the plants. Just started watching the channel... you guys are great, especially Houston!!
@cliffords.83414 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. Then all Daniel needs to do is to check the PH level and add more nutrients accordingly.
@briankathy25804 жыл бұрын
Although on the surface your solution may seem logical, having made this mistake myself in the past, I wouldn’t recommend it, as you end up making a rod for your own back. You may save yourself the trouble of bailing excess fluid out of the container to save the plant (s) from drowning but you will be left with the additional problems of having to adjust both PH and nutrient levels each time it rains heavily. Also when you harvest your plants, you will have to plug the hole that you make for drainage, in order to get the nutrient solution to the right level (height), to start new plants in the container. In essence, it’s better to prevent the rain from getting into your system in the first place, than deal with the problems that it causes afterwards.
@cindywagner46234 жыл бұрын
That would work. Then you’d know too when to stop filling with the overflow. Great idea!
