Best video on the subject! Thanks! Found this tree at the Toronto Botanical Garden and got some seeds, but lost them. Recently I was gifted a bunch of pods and just started the process. I will plant some in my property but I want to try to training it as bonsai as well. How your trees are doing? It would be nice to have an update!

I've tried my hands at a few of these, even got one to grow (it did not survive the winter). If you don't scar them enough, soaking them does NOTHING. I also had a couple of them rot after planting, but I had really old seeds that had been sitting for at least a few years. I plan to visit the tree I got them from this fall and get more pods.

I'm trying to figure out how to overwinter one I grew from seed. It's only about a foot tall. Any idea what you did wrong?
@RipleySawzen2 жыл бұрын
@@theurbanthirdhomestead It was in a pot, so I'm sure the freeze-thaw didn't sit too well with it. The new one I've got now is going in the fridge for the winter as soon as the rest of the leaves drop.

@@RipleySawzen Thanks! Mine's in the ground, so I'm going to mulch the cr@p out of it, wet the ground really well, and hope for the best.🤞

What an unusual tree. That seed pod is what I imagine jack and the beanstalks magic seeds came in lol. Also looks like the growth rate is similar to the beanstalk. Crazy impressive growth 👍

I agree! I was intrigued and had to collect some. Unfortunately I didn’t get a magic bean stalk but got some pretty cool trees!

I've been doing the same thing! I have tiny little trees now and want to make a few of them bonsai

Hi! A year ago I was at a botanical garden and I just so happened to notice on the ground some strange-looking pods with seeds, which, being curious, I collected some of. But I didn't exactly know how to germinate those hard-coated seeds so I started looking for some information and found your video. I planted 2 of them in May 2020 and 2 more this year. I was overjoyed when I saw that little sprout above the surface! The first two that I planted have recently come out of winter dormancy and are getting their new leaves right now and it fills me with so much joy watching them grow! All of that wouldn't have been possible without your video, for which I am very grateful. I've been wondering if you could do an update of your Kentucky coffee trees? Would be awesome!
@HerbandRoots3 жыл бұрын
That is so great to hear! These have not put out any new leaves this Spring for me yet. The stems look green and healthy but no growth and it is getting late in Spring now. I'm starting to suspect they did not make it through the Winter.

We made coffee from the Kentucky Coffee tree seeds. Its ok tasting but no sub for true coffee. But could be used as an add in to regular coffee to extend your coffee supply! They look great!

Thanks! I was wondering about it! Might do in a pinch!! Great idea to make the supply stretch.

I had one in my backyard when I bought my house northern Indiana it was approximately 6' tall and now 12 years later it's a little over 30' tall I noticed a tree sprouting up about 15' away from it it to is a Kentucky coffee I've seen chewed up seed pods as well I think these squirrels are starting to chew them
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
That is a ton of growth!! I would hate to be the squirrel that has to chew one of these! They were really tough. Maybe they gave up and left the seed scarified enough to germinate?! That would be pretty cool!👍

This was cool to watch! I just planted 7 of these, but I'm afraid I may have scarred the seeds too deep. I guess I'll know in a couple weeks...
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
You never know! These seem pretty tough. Only one of the ones I planted didn't germinate and I never did dig it up to see if it was not scarred deep enough or it just failed. I will try to remember to check that in the Spring.

Wow I'm literally growing my own right now and for a bonsai and it's just shot out of the ground like a rocket. have not been able to find any information on people using them for bonsai material, which is weird cause the strong silhouettes and cool flowers would make it perfect - would love to know how your experience has been. Have you started wiring? Any tips after 3 years

I successfully germinated my seeds and they are almost 12 inches tall. I started them 6 weeks ago. I live in northern Indiana in zone 5. Do I need to bring them in this winter? I’m afraid they won’t survive our brutal winters. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
Nice work! That is some amazing growth! These trees are quite hardy so they should be ok if you leave them outside. You can bury the pot in the ground to the rim and mulch it in until Spring for protection. If you have the space, you could also put them in a shed once temps are below freezing for protection but make sure they don't completely dry out. They do need dormancy each year but generally missing one year of dormancy is not going to kill the tree. Especially with the late start of the seeds. If they do not get dormancy year after year though it will start to take its toll though.
@15speelmana4 жыл бұрын
What temp did you have these growing at? I have seeds that I filed in an unheated polyhut. the seeds were soaked and planted in the same kind of media. I have noticed some of the seeds get mushy and moldy, this may be from the depth of my filing. I am located in central Ohio.
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
The room was around low 70s at night and high 70s during the day and around 50-60% humidity. I did not nick the seed coat deep at all. My tools were kind of dull. Going through the shell and into the seed itself can damage it but it’s hard to say what happened. You could try filing it less and if they don’t germinate you can try another pass with the file and try germinating again. You can get a second chance if you don’t go deep enough but not if you go too deep into the seed.

How often do you water it?
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
I let the surface of the soil dry out and then give them a good watering. I also use a very light mix with a lot of perlite so it does not get waterlogged.

So, it needs cold countries?!! Not for us in Africa?
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
It does require dormancy in the Winter so it won't work in most of Africa. It looks like there are some isolated spots in Morocco, Algeria and South Africa that have climates that are suitable.
