When harvesting winter squash, always try to keep a portion of the stem. They will store longer. Use garden clippers to cut them off the vine.

So glad to see your back. Life sure does get busy and sometimes we take on to much. But glad your getting back into what you love and also a great stress reliever being in the garden. I was lucky enough that someone gave me a few last year and I had made soup that turned out so yummy. Freezes well also. Always a pleasure. This video I would say is my favorite seeing you pull that wagon. You must have felt over the moon with your huge harvest. Hard work thats fun sure pays off. Awesome girl❤

How many Tromboncino plants were you growing on your trellis? Did the vines take over the adjacent area outside of the trellis? I would love to grow, but am limited in my adjacent area space. Thanks for your video!

Hello! I believe I had 2 on either side. The vines tried their very best to to grow in the direction of the raised bed where I was growing other things. I just came out every other day to re-direct them onto the trellis. I also needed to provide a bit of assistance with helping some of the vines on the trellis, rather than just hanging down. Thank you so much! I watered them on a regular basis and used worm castings. Sometimes I just sprinkle it and sometimes I make worm casting tea. I also mulch with wood chips. Happy Gardening!

In this case, cattle panels cost is justified - just saying that I've got the tromboncino fever :)

This fever will not go away. 🤣 If you can’t get your hands on cattle panels, you can still grow them. All you need are posts of some kind, 2x2 wood posts or t-post. Then attach wired mesh to them. For the squash vines that I allow to grow along the ground, I have tried many different tips…. BUT the best thing that has worked for me, has been holding off on planting the seedlings in the hopes of the borers being gone. HOWEVER, the absolutely best thing I have found to work, is growing vertically in my waist high garden beds. 😊

How is your trellis attached to the raised bed? And how far are the raised beds from each other to do this arch?

My husband used U shaped nails and placed 1.5 to 2 feet of the cattle panel into each bed. The beds are 5 feet apart. I'm 5 4" so I need to go on my tippy toes to reach up to the middle. This height allows my son to ride the mower under it.

I was going for 100 kg... bit under 80 kg is close enough :) But I'm wondering how long can you store an undamaged one over the winter...

They would store like any winter squash as long as you remove them from the vine with the stem attached. I processed all of mine within 2 weeks of pulling them all off the vine. I made tons of soup that I froze, I diced some up and froze them and some I roasted, mashed and froze to use as a side dish. YUM!

What is the difference of tromboncino and rampicante? I'm growing rampicante for the first time this year. I've never heard of tromboncino! Oh, the rampicante was thicker in the neck. I should watch the whole video before I ask questions. LOL Which is your favorite?

Lol! They are extremely similar. If you let them mature on the vine in order to use them as a winter squash, you can’t tell the difference. The seeds came from 2 different companies. One from Baker Creek and one from a Canadian company called West Coast Seeds. Taste is the same. I have both planted again this year. I actually just had soup I made from them the other day! I made many pots and froze them on single serving size so I could grab them for lunch. Yum

I saw these on this channel and grew them and others in ‘22. Only one rampicante survived. I realized that if I had another plant or two my harvest would have gone up more than just 2 or 3X. With just one plant, there were times where there were several female blossoms but no male blossoms, so none of the female blossoms pollinated and grew into one of these huge squash. With another plant or two, when one plant is producing only female flowers, there will likely be another plant with at least one male flower to allow pollination and a squash. 116 pounds is impressive, especially when that is half’ish the total harvest. Thanks for the tip on this variety.

The cattle panel is 4 x 16. Actual grow trellis space, minus the part attached in the box is 4 x 12. Last year I believe I did 2 plants on each side. This year I had too many plants leftover, so I did 3 each side. I will definitely need to prune to allow air flow and pollinators in.

Morning! I’m in growing zone 5b. My estimated last frost date is May 7th. I usually add another 10 days onto that and then plant my seedlings out. My first frost date is usually the first few days of October. 😊

It's NOT similar to a zucchini though when it's green. It tastes like a watery pumpkin and it has the texture of mushy pumpkin flesh when cooked. It's great when it gets brownish and really ripe. Then it just tastes like a slightly milder butternut squash.

Oh! I'm sorry you don't like it when it's young. Everyone I've made it for couldn't tell it wasn't zucchini. From my experience, it has the same characteristics as zucchini in the since that it will take on the flavours you add to it. We've used it as spiral noodles with pesto, grilled it, used it as lasagna noodles, sauted, used it in place of the zucchini in chocolate zucchini bread. Like you, I also think it's great when mature. My absolute favourite way is in soup! I will chop and freeze for making soup or mashed squash. A couple of plqnts go a long way! I liked that you shared how you use then. Do you think that, mixed with potatoes for starch, it could make gnocchi? I love butternut squash and my favorite is Oven super hot lile 470F. Squash cut like large, thick fries. Coconut oil, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper (important! Lol) and cooked similarly to fries for a while, like 50mins. They sort of caramelize on the outside and are delicious. Now, I keep the thick orange skin on! The skin taste super delicious after it’s very golden in the oven. Eat with mayo as the mayo seems to balance the sweetness of the squash as well as the hotness from the cayenne! ❤️
