How do you know if the eggs you dehydrated go bad?
@GardeningintheNorth
@GardeningintheNorth 20 күн бұрын
Hello, Watch out for discoloration. Once powdered eggs go bad, they will darken. You will notice that it is turning brownish once it is past its shelf life. The texture will also change. When it is in good condition, it is soft and powdery, similar to flour. However, if it goes bad, it will have clumps. The powder will turn sticky and inconsistent. An unpleasant smell is another indication that the powdered egg is no longer in a good condition. If it smells sour or off, discard it immediately. I hope this helps 🙂

@@GardeningintheNorth Thank-you for quick reply. I'm in Zone 5b central Nova Scotia :-) Yes I was researching on this for 4 hours - and is a lot of recent controversy on the safety of storing homemade sundried or dehydrated tomatoes. (we don't add Sulphites or silicone dioxide). Even Purposeful Pantry only commits to a few days in fridge! Oregon Cottage has done sun dried for MANY YEARS no problems - and was put off by the new found warnings, so she did great research. She learned years ago from a old pro to dip each piece in red wine vinegar to add to acidity before putting in oil, and only add DRY herbs (like you) not fresh like we do dill pickles. I'm going to try the red wine vinegar dipping then store in fridge, and then use the used vinegar to make my pickled beets and onions 🙂
@GardeningintheNorth
@GardeningintheNorth 24 күн бұрын
@@simplyfinancials that sounds very interesting. Maybe use a bowl and strainer to do a bunch at a time. I also dry mine out pretty good, I wonder if that also has something to with being safe. I think in the end, it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I think I saw someone put theirs in the freezer, but I would hate for them to crack. 🤔

5 beans in a quart jar? I would put at least 4 ounces - or at least 20 beans per jar. Maybe even up to 25. I didn’t make that number up. It’s based on the FDA standard, which says there must be at least 3.3 ounces of vanilla beans per ounce of alcohol. I always go at least 25% over FDA standard u less I’m going with a double fold.

LOVE these plants! I grow them literally between rocks with sprinkle of dirt around them. ALSO my favorite plants to look at and have used them as a subject in my paintings. They are the first plants to show up in my Nova Scotia garden. I was given a few of these plants 10 years ago and continue to give the bulbs away when I can. I like that I can pick a few bulbs to use for making a tuna or egg sandwich without chopping into the bigger typical onions. I do not PULL out the mother plants but snip the recent growth with the new bulbs dangling and within days new growth starts to happen on the mother bulb still in the ground. They are the ever-ready plant that no critters nor bug desire to eat them. Thanks for a great video I can pass around to those who get the bulb abundance give way every year!
