My best friend and I moved to Oahu for four years in1974. We started in Waikiki for 6 months, but then rented a duplex in Pearl City on Hooli Circle. It had a huge mango tree in the back yard and we sent mango bread to everyone back on the mainland for Christmas that year. Had to be careful cause there were sometimes scorpions in the rotting fruit, probably attacking the other insects attracted by the fruit. Anyways, when I saw the street sign for Hooli Circle - instant memory. We used to go to the Pearl City Tavern for a fancy meal - had the monkey bar and really good pupus plus the stuffed lobster that I usually ordered. I think it is gone now. Anna Miller's in Aiea was where we went after partying all night - it was open really late. Saved up and bought nice stuff at Liberty House at Pearlridge. Good times.

Love the video. Grew up in Pacific Palisades and have friends and family in the community. I remember going to Mickey's on Lehua Ave at 2am in the morning with friends and chomping on the veal cutlet w/gravy and mac salad. It's still open but not the same like before. I also remember there was a golf driving range as before the Children's House and we used to catch fish, prawns, crayfish, frogs in the stream there. Keep on doing this kind of content. Love going down memory lane.

I did a tour of duty back in June of 1990 stationed in Schofield Barracks. Did hiking and horseback riding. My x wife and I with my oldest daughter ( who was 5 and turns 38 tomorrow) lived in Pearl City in the Twin Towers until we moved on base. My middle daughter was born over there. She was named "Nanie after the Hawaiian hospital nurse who help deliver her. I use to tell her" one day I'm going to take you back there. We left to go back to the mainland in September of 1992.. My oldest granddaughter will be visiting Hawaii in 2 weeks ans i told her to visit and have fun.

This is crazy. I grew up in the area and went to manana elementary in the mid 90s. I remeber we used to skate in the paring lot, and chilling at my friends grandparents house. I was also a JPO with Miss Patty. I used to ball with K at the courts. The area is definitely different with all the development. There was a lot of kids when I grew up there and would also play with kids in Hooli circle. Never thought I would see the area KZbin. Thanks for the info on housing.

Oh my gosh! I too also grew up in Pearl City. Hale Ola town houses right by Manana military housing to be exact. I remember when all those retail areas were all military warehouses back in the days. Hooli circle was the area where my neighbors and I would catch the school bus going to either Highlands intermediate or Pearl city high school. As far as dark tunnels that’s the place we could cut class. In fact one of my neighbors was washed away from the running waters in dark tunnels this is back in I believe 88’-89’. They were also in the news at that time. My Miss those days. I now live in Maili and to me Pearl City will always be my home. Every time I go to Pearl City shopping center and so forth I always feel at home compared to Maili. I wish I had the money to purchase a house in Pearl City.😢. As for the Manapua man Mike he is still around and parks his white van by the crosswalk over pass by moanaloa road.

Coincidentally, I lived on Ho'oli Pl too for a bit-all the way at the end in a duplex. Looks like it was three houses from your house??? It was a quiet street and kids would just run amok and was a little lord of the flies back at the end of Ha'awi way close to the cane haul road. So funny about the dirty mattress! If one was around it served as a trampoline! I also remember lots of bufo toads in the backyard at night.Probably because there was just the valley/cane haul road back there. We would also peek over the fence at the military families on the other side and wonder if their lives were better on that side of the fence. Weird that the houses are all torn down. All the commercial businesses are where the big warehouses were. It's so different now.

Huli Huli (turn turn) was originally describing the Marinating process where you would soak chokest chicken in a barrel and HULI (turn) the barrel from time to time to marinate the chicken to the Max! Now days people think it means turn turn over the Bbq Fire but yeah, theres some insight for all you folks 😇

Not even sure if people even remember if this place was called Holiday City. We were I might be wrong one of the first families to live in Holiday City. We lived in the 2 bedroom side while they were finishing up the 3 bedroom side. This was on Hooli Circle. I believe this was 1968 or 1969 when they were just building all the homes. Most of the homes were not even built. Just the slap of cement the house was going to be built on and framing just going up. The place you were standing with the guy in the green shirt on the moped is where I live now. Your just a few houses away from where our house is now. Holiday City duplex homes have changed. Some have added to their homes. Some have torn down the homes and completely rebuilt. Been living in Holiday City for about 54-55 years.

So, I visited. And OMG: I'm still a Kapolei stan, but? Pearl City is going to give it a run when it comes to grocery shopping! I had to catch my breath in Foodland Farms, the offerings were so expansive! I also realized that I'd been in that exact stop about a week earlier when I'd gotten my nails done, so? It was destined, lol! Thanks for the hints, tips, and details; this video translated immediately for this transplant!

Yeah, that whole area near Manana is so different compared to 20+ years ago. Used to be all government warehouses storing military surplus stuff. Apparently a lot of houses in Manana got all red dirt on them when they were developing that area. It is kind of traffic pain now, but it's nice to have all those places to shop/eat. One of the most interesting things about Pearl City is how everything is on a hill; you're either going downhill or uphill, with the high school at the very top (that the public can access anyway). I lived in Waiau and going to Pearl City High School was uphill both ways, no joke.

So I'm old....attended Manana Elementary when it was BRAND NEW! We didn't have a cafeteria yet so a truck would come, and lunch was delivered to the classroom where we ate on the floor since all the rooms were carpeted. Anyway, when did you tape this? I've been trying to catch Popolo Boi's but for the last 3 weeks or so, he's not in his usual spot near 7-11. Did he move? I see the field behind him on your video. I always pass by on Friday's around noon. Hope he's not closed down!

Kiss and Ride. Twin Towers for $250k. OMGee. Need to make those big money developers guarantee to do at least 25% real affordable units not just like a 5 % set aside. I have watched real affordable buildings get approved then morphed into high end condos in the old harbor area of Kaka'ako earlier in the redevelopment designation there over ten years ago. Now no more afgirdable builders date risk the investment in time and expenses because the big boys got more money, influence the bureaucrats and have plenty plenty lawyers. It is a real issue and lical worksrs have to travel too far to work in town or out.

Um, affordable housing is a crisis everywhere in mainland US. Not just Hawaii. I believe it’s a global phenomenon. And something that occurs every few decades, worldwide. Pretty sure it somehow correlates with the real estate bubble, that happens every 1 to 2 decades. Nothing to worry. The mental health of our worldwide population IS something to worry about though.
