ABOUT THE MINIMAL MOM:
Hi, I'm Dawn, if we haven't met before, I'm married to Tom and we have four kids ages 8-13. We live outside of the Twin Cities in MN and have called ourselves minimalists for 8 years now. We got rid of 85% of our stuff and don't miss ANY OF IT!

Dawn, I love your content! But honestly I find myself turning on your channel not because I need/want decluttering but because I'm having a bad day and your sweet smile and bubbly personality turns my day around. You are changing the world in more ways than you intend. Don't lose heart because of a few negativity seekers. You are a light to the world!

The best thing we did as parents was to insist on a family dinner every night that it was possible. No TV, no phones, just real conversation. Our grown sons now want family dinner one night a week as they still live near by. I feel so blessed that they still think family time is important.

Your innate ability to not live with a black and white mentality inspired me deeply in the beginning of my minimalist journey. I think back to your words in my trying my best each and every day, never expecting perfection. Offering gift ideas as a minimalist may sound contradictory, but in my mind it showed how to continue to embrace my grey. My gratitude for you is limitless.

I left a negative comment in your last video, and I hope mine was one of the ones you said was kind… I am long time follower, and I absolutely do know your heart was in the right place. I was genuinely thinking you should be made aware how people, including me, were being affected by this particular video. But now that you explained how the comments affect you (even the kind ones), and also how many people get drawn in to the negativity, I am not happy I wrote it.

3:56 Dawn, *it DOES matter if people unsubscribe because among other things, it means they're missing out on potentially life-changing content!* 😃❤ The disconnect between the stop buying title and pro-buying content of that video was understandably upsetting to people but easy to fix. A trickier issue I'm hoping you'll address is the concerns people have raised about Trades of Hope. MLM's COST most workers money or provide less than a fast food worker's income withOUT benefits. In addition, T of H sells a LARGE percentage of products that are clearly mass-produced vs. truly "artisan" made, which suggests that the women at risk they claim to be helping are likely seeing *pennies* (if that) for many of the products T of H sells. *I recommend closely scrutinizing the wording and images on their website and requiring hard data about employee income and profit percentages for both the stateside and international workers before continuing to endorse the company.* I once worked for an unethical company that exploited my good will and persuasive ability to unknowingly deceive customers and it still haunts me years later. ❤

I watch both The Minimal Mom channel and this one because I find your content so valuable. I don’t think that “buy less” and “if you do want to buy, buy intentionally and with awareness of where your purchases come from and the ethics surrounding the seller” are mutually exclusive. I’ve stopped buying gifts for the sake of buying a gift, and try to purchase intentionally and considering ethics etc so that video really resonated with me. I have 5 children aged 7-14 and I’m so glad I found your channels - I genuinely use things I have learned from you every single day, and am so grateful ❤

Oh and the biggest thing about my mom is that she took us to church always! (Dad worked a ton, the breadwinner, and nights many times) Sunday, Wednesday etc. mission trips in the US. She always would give the last treat even if she wanted it (I do that too with my boys ❤) just so selfless, always there to rub my growing pains away/get the heating pad. Hang certain laundry of mine even if late at night, so didn’t shrink etc. I could go on! Thankful for her. She actually grew up on a farm too 🐄 🐖 🌳 she’s 100% danish(so I’m 50% and my siblings); all four of her grandparents came over on the ship from Denmark. We’re proud Danes ❤ 🇩🇰 besides a few other words, she can recite the whole 23 Psalm in Danish, her grandmother taught her 🤍 I actually gotta record her saying it to keep when she goes home someday ⛅️

Having seen so much of your content, I see the conflict in "stop shopping, but here's a gift guide", but it doesn't bother me. You wouldn't ever tell people not to buy a gift for Mother's Day if they truly wanted to and gift buying tends to be a small portion of overall yearly spending. You're more concerned with daily habits that add up over time. Still subscribed!

I made sure my kids, who are now in their mid 40's, knew they were loved. We tell each other all the time. That proves to me that good kids come from the love parents give them. Because I didn't have much to give them growing up. I'm so grateful for my parents as well. If they were still, alive my mom would be 99 and my dad would be 100 today. Happy Mothers Day!

Sweet parenting thoughts! Your humble, honest upbringing is inspiring. I had a similar raising, and one thing that I realized as an adult was that I never worried about money. If we went somewhere (which was not often), we could afford it. I never questioned whether we had enough money for the outing. I’m thankful for parents who allowed us to take them and their support for granted. ❤️

I saw the other video you posted about saving money and living minimally and then sharing great Mother's Day gift ideas. My take on it was that you realized that most people want to get their mom something special on that day, so you were simply helping those folks with ideas of some gifts that would be useful, or just plain beautiful. I didn't view it as a conflict. Geez, some people are so easily offended. I love watching the two of you.

Your heart, your wisdom, your joy, your insight. Your mom should be so proud. And so should your dad. They did a fantastic job. People are not kind of you on your videos. There are the ones missing out. Trades of hope we love their items. Their jewelry is beautiful. I have gifted it as gifts and the people love them. The earrings done that you showed. I am excited to see when they're available to buy. Because I have always loved them and didn't know where to get them. The jewelry I had from traves of hope my Daughter loves it so much. I don't have any pieces here. When you talked about wanting more children that was me. I had always hoped. I was going to adopt after my 4 children. That didn't happen but I will say when I became available and willing. It's amazing how the Lord is. Open the door for me to be a mom figure to some and a Grandma. Or Nana figure to others. We just have to be willing and We never know what happens. I grew up when my birth. Father wasn't so good, but I'm thankful for my mother. And then later God gave us my stepfather. He was a man of the Lord. Your mom for the look in your faces. The joy in your faces I can only imagine your mom's cheeks hurting from the biggest smile and her tears flowing from great joy. Dawn and Diana, I just want to say you are fantastic mom's and we want to thank you for who you are your family. For (nonphysical) reasons too complicated to go into here, I never had kids. Although it wasn't my choice, I'm actually more or less ok with that. But I really, really don't like when others try to "make it ok" or whatever by saying that I'm "like a mother" to my nieces and nephews or to my students. I absolutely understand they're saying it from a place of love, and I totally respect people who feel that way, but I don't. For me, that's not being a mother, not even a little bit, and it makes me feel awkward and embarrassed and weird when they say it. So because it's always a big deal at church, I've avoided church on Mother's Day for decades now (but other than that I attend very regularly). Instead, I've always found my joy in spending time with my own mother on that day. But my mom died in February. I, too, grew up in poverty with wonderful, hard-working, loving, Christian parents and I loved them both very much. Mom was 90 when she died, healthy but in a lot of pain for years, and very ready to meet her Savior, so it wasn't as hard as one might imagine to let her go. I was sad, and I miss her a lot, but I know she's happy and healthy now and I couldn't ask for more than that. However, it leaves me sort of... at loose ends this year. It's currently after 8 pm on the evening before Mother's Day and I'm still undecided about church in the morning. I might not decide until it's actually time to go (or not go). I won't be able to call or visit my mom tomorrow and that kinda sucks, and it makes me want to be with other people who love me. Still, I don't particularly want to be surrounded by talk of motherhood, and I know that I will be. I'm just going to pray for wisdom and for peace, and let God lead me in the way that he knows is best. I know this is pretty heavy stuff for a KZbin comment, but I feel like this is one of the few places on KZbin where it might be taken in the spirit in which it's intended. I appreciate anyone's prayer if you feel so inclined, and I sincerely wish the happiest of Mother's Days to all biological mothers, adoptive mothers, future mothers, and honorary mothers. You're truly the best of the best.

I've never returned anything to Amazon, but I also have bought maybe a dozen things over the last decade😂I'm allergic to anything bigger than small local shops. Big, overstocked stores, including online ones, are just too much for me after 20 minutes of wandering around. I usually leave empty handed unless I can remember and locate what I went in for in the first place! (However, I can ALWAYS find the chocolate!) We have five children, four of them my birth children. I remember the good old days of soccer and other after school activities. One kid is supposed to be at practice half an hour before another one's game starts across town! And people wonder why mothers have several thoughts running through our brains at the same time! However many children you are blessed with, cherish them and the brief time you have before they are grown and off and running💗

Hi Dawn and Diana. I continue to be subscribed to both of your channels. I watch all of your videos and don't miss any of them. I enjoy and continue to be inspired by your content. I finally have other women that think like I do and care about, what I care about. I have participated in some of the special content that you both have put out (getting organized for Christmas, the Christmas guidebook, decluttering after Christmas, the getting ready for Easter guidebook, the all day declutter.) please continue to produce this fantastic content. Keep up the good work- we need you both❤️Love you both.❤️

I've watched almost every MM video you have made, watched almost every podcast video, and I'm a member of the mentorship group but T of H is a MLM. I've been involved in several MLMs (unfortunately) and they prey on women. Most women who get involved in MLMs make far less than minimum wage. I know I did. I sold jewelry at one time and I hardly made anything by the time I packaged jewelry up and shipped it out. I prob didn't make $2 an hour! I don't think it's negative to be concerned that a MLM is being pushed by you and Diana. The first time Diana mentioned it immediately I looked it up bc I know the signs. Many people have commented nicely that they are concerned and have given a reference to someone who makes content addressing MLMs. I do love and respect both of you. I hope you will take this comment as it is intended and not as a criticism. ❤

I really appreciate the kind and thoughtful way you expressed your concerns about T of H being an MLM. ❤ I share them and appreciate you speaking up on behalf of the workers. It's so easy for kindhearted people to be misled by companies claiming to prioritize helping because we project our own good intentions onto others.

Dawn when I found your videos on KZbin years ago I immediately went back and binge-watched all of them right from the beginning! You have always resonated with me and although I wouldn't call myself a minimalist, I did declutter loads of stuff and reap the benefits of all your hard-earned advice in so many ways. My favorite videos were always when you had Diana on (I am subscribed to her channel also!) and when you spoke so highly of your Mom and Dad ❤I love seeing the pics of your family growing up and your current family. The people who commented negatively on that gift video are people who just don't know you as well as we do lol 😉. You have the biggest heart and many times when I'm debating buying something or when I'm organizing in my home I think "what would Dawn do?" because I value your opinion! You should be so proud of all that you have accomplished, all while being honest with your thoughts and kind-hearted. Thank you!

Love every video, but this is in the top 5! Everyday I thank the Lord for my parents( now 20 and 25 years dead), and the wonderful life they gave me and the values I was taught. You are both great moms, thank you for passing the baton to improve future generations!!!

Dawn and Diana your mum sounds wonderful and I am so happy you have her. I'm afraid my mother is a narcissist and I needed to separate myself from her many years ago. I have worked very hard to be a good mother to my two girls. All of us with narcissist mothers dream of having a mum like yours. Treasure her. Happy mother's day to you all. Obelia From Australia 🦘

I thought your video was great and had no problems with the Helpful gift ideas at the end. Like Diana said, those of us who know your heart understand the point: don't have too much stuff, but when a gift is needed or appropriate, give something that isn't just More Stuff!

You took such good care of your bikes because you worked your butt off to earn them. Unlike many kids of today that just have everything handed to them, just "because". I so completely agree with you girls that kids need to take part in family responsibilities and projects to realize their potential and contribution that they have can offer their family. Your parents really taught you valuable lessons and prepared you for life !

You have been such a great influence in my life and knowing your are Christian. I found you by chance and mentioned Bible Recap and having been basically home bound so I gradually have started decluttering and it because of hearing the difference in your live and people started seeing changes in me. I don’t know your sisters name to subscribe. You do so much free for all. God bless you both. PS. It recently have seen my “stuff” is really “stuff”. I also wanted to know if the cookbook is still available

You can absolutely get a ring/necklace at any point! My husband got me one with our birthstones when my son was born. 2 years later when my daughter was born he secretly took it and had her birthstone added too! ❤️ Think of it like re-sizing. 😃

I absolutely love the bike story I wanted a pair of Puma tennis shoes when I was a freshman because everyone else had them. My parents agreed but I had to pay 1/2. We laughed saying I bought the right one they bought the left one. I never realized how much they spent on our shoes- with such a narrow foot I had to wear Striderite shoes What a lesson- man I took care of those shoes. We did the same with our kids- they appreciate stuff more than

MLMs are such a predatory business model. The message always sounds great, but the reality of the business is so much different. So many women get sucked into them.

Dawn, I have been watching you for YEARS. You are kind, funny and just want to help people. When others leave negative comments, my thought is: "Did that make you feel better?", "Don't you have more important things to do with your day?" Unfortunately, we do have people in this world like that and we just need to remember our intentions.....wanting to help people and have a caring environment. You keep being YOU whom we have grown to love.
