I'm elderly, so I can't bring home and install cattle panels. So I use a shyteload of bamboo poles and string.

Lots of ways. In a row, with garden twine to make a fence-tpye structure. In pots, for vines, and next to tall, heavy things like sunflower, dahlias, etc.

The garden fence isn’t an option since the reason for putting the fence up was to keep critters that eat things I plant away from plants. Anything that gets within nibbling distance reminds my goats and wild deer that there’s something yummy in the yard.

Great idea, James- I will add this to my 'to shoot' list! The fence is the main defense and has been really effective against rabbits (the bottom 2' is lined with chicken wire). I'm still trying to figure out a foolproof defense for squirrels, chipmunks, voles & moles though!

I think that growing vertically is ideal for folks who find it hard to get down and harvest at ground level. I’ve seen another KZbinr make a similar arch for pole beans, which makes it so easy to pick and it means you’re in the shade while picking.

Absolutely! One of the years that my sister was pregnant she said growing pole beans on trellises was the best choice she made in the garden- not having to bend over to pick beans at 7 months pregnant was a lifesaver!

Did I enjoy this video? NASA probably noticed that BIG green area in Ohio and knows your garden. WOW ! Your garden exploded. I noticed you stretching for your moster size Midnight Snack ( we have them and Lady they not up as big as yours but they very welcome here and planting them in our future years great fresh and planning to as you show to bake some. I've have cattle panel and love them.But also the reinforced concert panels and their having larger openings 5x5 inches I find the bigger openings as handier of the 2 panels. Where you're using bamboo I use sticks from trimming my own trees and love the tomato clips to get most any plant started up into my panels. Lady amazed at your garden but I have learned to brace myself in your fall garden. Thanks for making me a improve Gardener. Also after pulling my potatoes I planted a cover crop buckwheat and black beans ( because I have them on hand for nitrogen) First good cover crop I've done. I'm having trouble in my area of Charles Dowling method of no tilt and best area in the tomato patch most as your teaching ( next season that cover crop I done is for my tomatoes patch so I'm expecting to get closer to your results. ) Great job you did on this video you have speaking skills and motivation skills Great Job Lady 👏 👍

I use 1/2" aluminum conduit with a couple of conduit elbows to make a trellis for my cucs with trellis netting. Netting is staked with landscape pins. I put the conduit at the edge of my 4" X 8' beds (north side) and seed the cucs at 2' away from the edge of the beds. Trellis netting is sloped from the top of the trellis at the edge of the bed down to the cuc's so they sort of lay on the netting instead of trying to make the cuc plants grow straight up. I find cucs hate growing straight up and would rather meander but this works well for me. I can tie them to the netting as they grow and the cucumbers set straight down thru the back of the trellis netting, I'm sure they are very annoyed that I make them grow this way but they are much healthier IMO.

You deserve to kick back with that cocktail, Jenna! I added cattle panel arches this year and love them. We had to get creative to get them home on our Highlander, but I'm grateful to have them. I don't like the look of them either when they are bare, but now that they have plants growing on them, I have people in the neighborhood coming by to ask about them and compliment on my garden. Love the idea of using the fence too. I'll have to do that next summer.

I lucked out this year! The cucumber beetles were late arriving, so the plants have stayed nice like never then normal. I didn’t used to plant nearly as many flowers in the veggie garden, but really enjoy it now! Take care!

Growing plants vertically really adds so much versatility to the garden and makes disease management and harvesting easier. I've been using string trellis to grow my indeterminant tomatoes with great success. Very good point you made about the need to calculate the impact of the shade that you create with vertical plantings. I'd love to use cattle panels but I don't own a pick up truck so I've been building trellises with wood frames and using re-purposed welded wire garden fencing for the trellis. Your garden looks fantastic!

I did spread my cucumbers 3.5 ft. spacing NOT as far as you suggested and did have improvements even picked 4 times and made your refrigerator pickles with most .The pickles are so extra crunchy and delicious. I've added several new areas in my yard to try cucumbers as I've in the pass had my best results in dimple sunlight around my apple tree in my last home. Thanks for the teaching Lady 🙏

Your garden is looking really wonderful! I've been growing my summer squash in containers vertical for acouple years now. I use a tomato cage and wood stakes for extra support. I'm in Ohio to and the vine borers are relentless! I have my containers set on milk crates so I can spin them around to check for borer eggs and remove them. Your reaction to the new drink was priceless!!! That's a great way to kick back and look at all the hard you've done 👍 To me it's definitely a labor of love!

@@GrowfullywithJenna Your welcome 🤗 Something I do that helps to stop a borer grub that's established in my squash plant is do surgery on the main stem. I use a craft knife and cut in were the frass (poop) is and dig the little grub out. The plant seems to take that kind of abuse very well!?? Make sure that you cover were you operated with soil if possible.

I LOVE vertical growing and have been doing it for years! The cattle panel trellises are indispensable, and I've also really fallen in love with planting climbers with sturdy plants like sunflowers, corn, and dwarf tamarillo. BTW, I love your channel even more now that I know you're a bourbon drinker! We've been to Kentucky bourbon country multiple times and have developed a deep appreciation for the artistry that goes into making bourbon. Try making a cinnamon rosemary old fashioned; it's life changing.

@@GrowfullywithJenna it’s in my head, but here it is: It’s best if you make a rosemary cinnamon simple syrup first - equal parts water and sugar with a few sprigs of rosemary and cinnamon sticks steeped in it. But, in a pinch, you can use a lump of turbinado in each drink - it just wouldn’t have the same, lovely rosemary cinnamon tones. Put a few teaspoons of the simple syrup in a glass, and a few drops of Angostura bitters. Muddle a small piece of rosemary and maybe two inches of orange peel. Add your bourbon, stir it up, add ice and a stick of cinnamon and a sprig of rosemary. This is especially good if you use a dark rye (Basil Hayden has a great one). When my rosemary is really coming in, I make a batch of the simple syrup and can it so that I can use it all winter long. Enjoy!

Vertical gardening is a must for me since I am limited in space to garden due to my free range goats, pig and chickens. We put lattice on the side of our deck from raised beds below up to the raised porch plus hung mesh metal on a section of the old play set for cucumbers.

I made a bamboo teepee, very narrow but 15' tall, for Greek gigantes beans. The footprint is about 3 square feet but it will grow me enough of these big creamy beans to dry for the whole year. Bonus: the hummingbirds love it!

I use concrete reinforcing wire for trellises. It costs about half as much as cattle panels and works just as well for me. They rust, but, mine are going strong after over 15 years, The only down side I see is the holes are smaller.

I have been having great success growing my cantaloupe and watermelon up and along my perimeter fencing. Zucchini is grown vertically, also. I have several 2x4s in the ground with 2x4s across the top of them for stringing up my indeterminate tomatoes, but sometimes the stringing breaks under the weight, so this year I screwed thick bamboo posts into the top crossboard with the other end in the ground, surrounded by sturdy tomato cages. The set-up is 8 feet tall. I've had great success so far this year with that. Withstood a derecho already. I have a 20x40 raised garden bed. I have a cattle panel over the entire 20 foot wide section over the middle of the garden. As the sun crosses the sky, it eventually throws brief shade across the whole garden. I have climbing flowers growing on that cattle panel. I've already canned over 40 quart size bottles of dill and bread and butter pickles and the cucumbers are still producing prolifically. Two more weeks and I'll be making probably another 40 jars of tomato sauce. Thanks again for another always great video. I appreciate the fact that you don't dwell on any personal problems in your videos like so many others do and that you actually teach us using some of the mistakes that you have made. I rarely watch other's videos anymore. I find yours to be genuine, well thought out, timely and pertain more to my growing zone 5b. Thank you!

I'm short on space so I grow a lot vertically, including utilizing my front fence/raised bed combo. It's made from goat panels so my watermelon, butternut squash, peas, etc grow right up it.

We use tomato cages for zuchinni and cucumbers. You can see the fruit easier, and air flow is good. We stake tomatoes and sometimes pepper with stakes and tie them to it if needed. We also tried growing tomatoes upside down this year out of a hanging basket on the porch. They didn't do too good. Will keep trying. A raised planter for herbs or lettuce is space saving too.

Love the idea of using tomato cages for zucchini- I'm going to have to do that next year. I've staked them on posts before, but it wasn't enough support. Thanks for sharing all of these ideas!

Just thought I’d share that I tried my hand at Crystal Apple cucumbers last year, and boy oh boy the growth caught me unaware. I know flowering/fruiting times so i knew to expect some stretch during budding stage… i was thinking they’d be mini - cos I think the pack said they were mini, and the fruit did turn out small(ish) anyway. But man, the crazy foliage and growth kept me on my feet with the bugs & WPM & IPM… etc 😅. Lol funny thing is I didn’t even like the fruit in the end. 🤦🏾‍♂️ Always keeping updated with your videos Jenna. Love the endless advice. Happy gardening growmie. ❤️

Your experience with Crystal Apple sounds very much like my experience with Lemon (and they appear to be very similar varieties)-- I was NOT expecting such a rampant plant, it's putting my most vigorous slicing cucumbers to shame! I'm also not a big fan of the fruit, and 'Lemon' at least seems to be more prone to diseases than my other varieties. Will not be growing that one again... though I know other folks love them!

I love growing vertically. I use cattle panels for everything. I also like to angle them about 30 degrees, which make it easier for the plant to lean, especially tomatoes, that don't have tendrils, and makes it a lot easier to harvest. I also cut cattle panels in half and made an A-frame over the pathway, just pushing the cut ends into the ground and strapping the panels together. I have done this for at least 15 years and don't have use t-posts with this method. What variety are the Zinnias in the foreground of your arched cattle panel with the volunteer squash? They are beautiful and the perfect color!!! Thanks

Very cool! I'll have to try some of your techniques to mix it up a bit in my gardens- thanks for sharing! Those zinnias are the 'Queeny Lime' (or Queen Lime- they're marketed both ways) series- I've primarily got 'Queeny Lime-Orange', and a few 'Queeny Lime' mixed in. One of my all time favorites!

This year I direct seeded some sugar snap peas along side my tomato starts. I was thinking that the peas would grow up the tomatoes, which they did, and be gone by mid summer. Everything worked out as plan and I got double duty from that one trellis. However, all my tomatoes had abnormal levels of blight. I really think the peas are so thick that they impede airflow. Also, when the peas died back they were difficult to remove and they left a lot of decomposing debris on my tomato plants. My take away is that this was a failure and even though I encourage myself to experiment, I certainly know enough about gardening to have thought this through.

I suspect your conclusion about the airflow is spot on. And I'm sorry to hear the result of the experiment was not a success- I love the idea of getting double duty out of one trellis!

A bourbon gal! Alright Jenna you're my kinda gal lol. I'm growing vertical more each year. I'm doing zucs vertical on stakes and tomato baskets this year but will probably buy another cattle panel for them next year. And I know what you mean about shading things when you go vertical. I'm always trying to plan around that. I always go vertical on the northeast and northwest sides of my garden since they cast no shadows on any crops but I'm thinking I can always go with lettuce or some leafy green that may actually benefit from shade in the summer on the backside of a cattle panel. And don't feel bad, I don't take advantage of my perimeter fence either. It's a flimsy deer fence but could probably use it for peas or beans. You have me thinking now. Thanks!

Great tip about going vertical on the NE or NW sides of the garden! But you're right- I'm thinking more and more about how to use that shade to my advantage. I didn't do the best job planning everything out this year- but am hoping to do a better job next year in terms of laying out where I plant my summer trellises and how I plant my cool season crops beside them!

You had your chance to mention the three sisters and did not...boooo lol. You can buy UV resistant industrial grade cable ties which is what I am trying in the Texas sun. A great think to recycle is old twin size bed frames. Solid frame with wire plus 4 stand off legs make them idea for standing off a wall vertically or as a horizontal support over melons. Another great and informative video.

As much as I love the idea of the 3 sisters planting, I don't have great success with it- I'm still looking for the specific heirloom varieties which are best suited for this type of planting. Though growing pumpkin/squash through my corn is something I do regularly.

There are certain vegetables that need a canopy to grow well, so it's not just up but over. Gourd, squash and beans. My mom doesn't take spacing in consideration when she planted the runner beans and they are doing poorly this year. Even growing up it's still important to give plants enough space to spread out. From now on, with indeterminate tomato, I'm only growing one plant per 6ft of space. They always become giant and unmanageable.

I'm growing all my cucurbits on trellises too, mostly 3.5x7ft wire mesh panels 1ft off the ground (so 8ft total height). And don't worry about your t-posts, my panels are held up with big branches I cut and dug 2ft into the ground to use as posts. Seems to be holding up well in the weather so far. My cucumbers and watermelons (black beauty - a small variety also) have already reached the top of my 8ft trellis so I'm not sure where they can go next. My squash are getting there too. I think I planted too many squash on my trellises though, I planted 4 per trellis just like my other cucurbits but it seems the squash take up more space. Maybe 2 would be better for a 3.5x8ft trellis. Or even just one? I also use trees. Last year I had my cucamelon growing onto my lilac. This year I have my passionflower growing on my cedar. Last year I was also growing my cherry tomatoes along the fence (this year too), and once they grew past the top of the fence I attached them to my neighbour's poplars that are growing along the fence... Beans are growing along the fence too. Beans seem to require less sun than cucurbits so I'll probably keep doing that with them. I might switch my cherry tomatoes to cattle panels though since they get so tall and I let them grow secondary stems. Slicer tomatoes seem ok on the double stacked tomato cages for now, but maybe trellises would be better. The determinate variety I'm growing (Mountain Merit) seems to be wrapping its leaves onto the cage wires so it doesn't need much help, not sure if that's a determinate tomato thing or just that variety. It's supposed to be resistant to late blight so we'll see if they produce longer than most determinates. This year I'm growing them in-ground, last year I grew them in pots and brought them into the greenhouse once temperatures cooled, and they were producing from late July to late November, so not very "determinate-like" production... I tried beans on okra but both plants have big leaves that kind try to smother each other so I'm not sure it's such a good idea. One thing I've wondered is whether growing vertically means less light? Like the top leaves blocking light to the bottom leaves? I wonder if something like winter squash might do better on the ground for that reason, if you have the space (I don't).

I will say, I almost always grow winter squash and pumpkins both on ground and vertically every year and have not noticed that one method is superior, except that vertical seems to helps with issues like powdery mildew. The production seems to the same with both methods.

Great video! I love growing vertically. Currently I have a Chelsea cucumber plant which is half on and half off of a trellis. The cukes on the trellis look *so* much better than the one on the ground, and are so much easier to find. I've also found that my tomatillos get out of control unless I have them up against a good sized trellis as well. It's good to point out that some plants will completely take over a trellis no matter how big it is--my Center Cut summer squash has practically taken over my entire back yard, for example. No trellis would have been able to handle it. Question: I have had absolutely no luck with any of my melons this year, and most of my squash. I grew Delice de la Table melons up a trellis--the plant is huge and has a million flowers, but no fruit at all :( My Snowball pumpkin and Marina di Chioggia squash have the same issue. (Note that these are all grown next to other vining plants than have produced with no issues at all this year.) So I realized that while heirlooms are awesome, I really want to grow plants--melons especially--that are reliable producers with short-medium vines that are at least somewhat disease/pest resistant. Do you have any suggestions? I prefer cantaloupe types rather than honeydews.

Thanks, Cara! Glad to hear that you've had a similar, good experience with growing vertically. And YES!-- I grew Center Cut 2 years ago, holy cow! What a rampant vine! I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've had with your melons and squash. One of the very best cantaloupe types I've grown in recent years, in terms of disease resistance, productivity, more compact vining habit, and flavor is 'Sugar Cube'. It is a personal sized melon- so the fruit only get to about 2-3 lbs, but I actually like the smalle size. I've yet to find a variety that is more resistant to insect pests though.

I'm so glad you're happy with them so far! The RazzMatazz may produce yet this season, but if they do, it won't be much. If I recall correctly, the first year out I got maybe 5 grapes! But it produced a LOT the second year!
