Same! 4x10 here, and I sucessfully grew tomatoes, cucumber, green beans, bell peppers, carrots, beets, coriander and butternut squash! Ok the squash kinda went crazy and is clearly out of the garden, but still! Try some bamboo sticks and regular cotton thread. You can create good support for cucumbers that way 😊 How did your garden go this year? What did you plant?

Thank you for all you guys do. I found your channel about 6 months ago when I had four raised beds I hadn’t used in two years because I’d been so unsuccessful and had 2 beautiful babies. Hey Jesse, I know that this is an old video but you can also do a trellis in the "inground area " with a short section of a cattle panel attached to 2 fence post with the other side on the ground. ( like half of an A-frame). Face it so the high side faces the morning sun . Grow a vining crop like cucumbers or melons up the cattle panel and grow lettuce and spinach underneath. This technique allows me to grow both lettuce and spinach in the heat of the summer. I have also had success with cilantro using this type of trellis. Happy Gardening!

in the past, I know a person who gardened on a very small veranda. 1 tomato plant, one cucumber, two beans, and some lettuce, onion, parsley, and basil on the bottom of the pots. fertilized them with scrabs from the kitchen and had a great supply of these vegetables till winter. yes, vertical gardening is the most productive way to garden where possible.

Another reason for growing up: it can do double duty as shade in the hot months! We've built our main trellising to shade out the eastern side of the house, where most of the bedrooms are, to give us some relief from the excessive Aussie heat here during summer- a great space to let summer chokos, snake beans, passionfruit, and tomatoes go as far up as they want, and we benefit hugely in many ways. I love getting multiple benefits from small investments!

I love the concept of cattle panels..What I have been able to use successfully is five foot fencing leftover from perimeter fence job. Good for plants in pots . Make circle out of fencing and pots in in circle inside. Protects from chickens and plants climb up fencing. Tin snippers and hand tool to connect ends. Not hard for an 78 year old to do.

Bamboo is a popular landscape plant and is great for making trellises and staking up plants. One of my favorite things as a kid was my Aunt's teepees that were covered with beans, peas, cukes, or melons. Lay in the cool shade with a book and munch fresh veggies! What a life.

Please do not encourage people to plant bamboo without mentioning that it's extremely invasive and hard to get rid of. It can quickly expand far beyond what someone may anticipate. If you want to grow it and have the space, that's fine, but read up first, and never plant it near a lot line where it will invade your neighbor's property.

mooster47 Not a problem is you choose a non invasive bamboo - “Clumping bamboo "will not spread" it only springs new canes from within and around the base of the clump. Shorter and new shoots appear closer to the mother culms. This bamboo is fantastic for hedging, garden features and it also looks great in a decorative pot.”

We also use our fences as trellises. Anyway I can go up to maximize growing, we do it. I recycle T-shirts to make string. We use old things for trellises. I think it makes the garden interesting and artistic to try to repurpose whatever is available. We live on a cleared acre of 7 acres of forest. We use lighter pine (hard) as T-posts sometimes and we use sticks for ladders tying off with T-shirt string or cut plastic grocery bags into string. We had no money to start so we composted our leaves, sticks, and clippings plus kitchen waste and used that to grow in while utilizing the above to make the trellises. For raised beds, we used felled logs to border and pilled leaves inside to grow. There are all kinds of ways to get started on very little or no money at all.

I took a single bed mattress from the curb during council clean up; I cut away all the material and padding to repurpose elsewhere and used the metal spring skeleton to hook to my fence as a trellis 😍 free and worths brilliantly!

I did that too! Then my husband had a flash of genius and suggested we cut the spring frame into strips lenghtwise (two springs wide) to make poles for climbing plants in stead of entire panels. So we did and put the strips on 3meter (9ft?) wooden posts painted in pastelly blues and they look so funny, like stacks of owls up a pole! 😂😂😂😂😂 But plants LOVE climbing up mattress springs, regardless of if they're used as panels or poles! The tomatoes pretty much supported themselves when the leaves grew into the springs. 👌👌👌

Fast forward 30 years and I am trying to garden again because I now have a country home with a lot of land. I have some spine problems so the kind of gardens I can plant are limited now. I've been growing cucumbers on a couple of trellises for the past two years, and the yield is tremendous. I live in a Co-Op Seniors building, so it's great that people an easily pick a cucumber, without having to bend down. I'm going to try the same for the tomatoes, this year. Thanks for the great vid!

Weeding can become a painful issue. We suggest cardboard around your plants, along rows. It breaks down eventually, but with so many delivery boxes these days, ask your neighbors.

Same here. I had a field rat that climb to my 5 fl balcony and chomped down on my greens and tomatoes. They even ate the peppers when all the other vegetables were gone. I gave up last year but have come back strong this year. I'm not sure if the field rats are still around but I intend to put out traps this time just in case. If they attack my sprouts, its all over for this season. Two years ago my goal was to grow tomatoes and peppers. I accomplished both and even moved on to grow several giant cabbages when the weather got cooler. My goal for this season is to grow a single honeydew, a cantaloupe, and a watermelon (vertical) on my small balcony -- I also may replant a couple of hot peppers. If can grow the melons, no one can ever offer any excuse for not having a garden. Just don't give up, and good luck.

Cattle panels are my favorite but when I didn't want to spend that much on trellis material I bought concrete reinforcement panels for for a few dollars each. These come in different gauge wire. They are rusty but that just adds to their charm under a green crop. I now use cattle panels for the sides and bend the cheap light reinforcement panels over the top for archways.

I posted this about the livestock panels under a comment but perhaps it deserves its own "space." There are four different types of livestock panels, different heights and different size holes - cattle, hog, pig, horse. I buy cattle panels because they are taller (wider for the trellis) and have less wire than horse panels which have smaller holes meaning more wire per panel (and more expensive because of the extra wire). The best place to buy them is, of course, farm supply stores and watch for them to come on sale. Locally, Wilco puts them on sale twice a year. If you are going to get several, talk to the manager to see if you can get a discount. When I bought ten, they gave me a discount. I also had them deliver them to me; the discount paid the delivery fee. I had hauled two before in the pickup and felt it was well worth the money to have the ten delivered.

These panels are going to drive me to drink. I need like 12 of them, so hauling in a pickup isn't really feasible. None of the places I have found around me deliver. I am thinking renting a uhaul may be my only option.

Alicia Payne you can do 3-4 at a time in a truck. Lay the cattle panel down flat right behind the truck, put the tailgate down and slide one end of the cattle panel into the bed to the back of the bed. Now pick up the other end of the panel and push the panel into a big U shape, you’re basically folding it like a trellis in the back of your truck. I’ve done 4 at the same time. Make 3 trips.

Great video! I love the encouragement to find inexpensive resources. I put up a fence around our garden to keep the dogs from laying in and playing in my in-ground beds. The fencing was used and free, and we reused t-posts and wood salvaged. I put beds all along the inside and used them all for climbing/trellis friendly veg like tomatoes, cucumber, beans and Malabar spinach. And since the dogs are close the deer don't come nibble. Also, I saw a pretty cool video where a lady had some old wire rack shelves in the garden. She planted spaghetti squash at the base and it climbed. When the squash got heavy she just pushed in onto the wire rack! Too easy!

It is Divine intervention that I found your channel. After having acres to garden from 1999-2012 I am getting started again on a 22-30 backyard of my small town, townhouse. I have a 6 foot chain link surrounding the back yard and was literally just trying to decide how to grow blackberries and grapes up the fence and somehow arboring them to a cage coming off my raised, permaculture salad bed. I used the stumps of an old tree to raise the bed and used the larger limbs as the bottom layer of the bed after a tree company who was supposed to bring me free mulch instead dumped the entire, 80 foot white oak tree they took down and cut up into sections. So I took lemons and made lemonade. LOL I am going to learn so much about vertical gardening from you channel that this year will not be as much of a learning curve as I once thought. THANK YOU!!!

Thought for you: What if you build one of you trellis arches and install a planter box at the top, so the plants that don't want to climb, could instead wave down the trellis.

Just wanted to let you know that I follow your instructions, and made a huge garden with arches. It worked out GREAT. I planted a mixture of spaghetti squash, yellow and green zucchini, buttercup squash, pole beans...and climbing nasturtiums. It was absolutely beautiful and grew a ton of food. I found I did not have to use any extra support for the (sometimes huge) spaghetti squash, I simply trained the end of the vines through the wire a bit each day. I really appreciate your help with this arch garden! Relatively cheap to build, and looks like it will last forever!

@@vikkistorey1911 Yep and if you need more, the Salvation Army here has one day when things are sixty nine cents and on Family Day, half price. I think bloomers could also be used but I have not had anything grown vertical yet. I will this year. So creative using an arch. I have very little sun to grow veggies so I will do this. The trick is getting the cow panels delivered. LOL My garden spot Is off the road and up twenty stairs. But wow, a lot can grow on a arched trellis, at least enough stuff for my use. I don't eat as much squash but will have to now.

divineflygirl when I had a balcony and limited light I stapled chicken wire up (temporary) and put pots at the bottom. In the fall winter and spring I put twinkle lights and ornaments up.

We went to Epcot this January and saw Mickey Mouse pumpkins. While talking to the worker where the pumpkins were, she told us about growing a greener earth ride that took you through Epcot’s vegetable gardens. It showed and told you how to grow heavy watermelons, pumpkins,etc by placing them in mesh bags onions, apples, oranges com in in the stores, then tying the bag like you did with the panty hose and attaching them with support limbs etc. The watermelon were very large but they were able to grow to big because they were tied with support. You can view it under Epcot Food Gardens. This just reminded me of this video!

It’s been a minute since I’ve commented since we’ve been busy adjusting into a minor fixer upper home. You encouraged me years ago to start growing something even if we were in an apartment and tried growing tomatoes. We just started a little garden and am using your tactic of using totes to cover things in the winter. I’m going through older videos and this is exactly what I needed to watch. I use carrle panels and t posts...The panels are 12 ft by 4 ft. Using 5 panels I made a great arbor 20feet long. I started attaching them about a foot from the ground which gave me extra height. My friends called it a greenbean garage. I canned over 130 qts of green beans

You might want to look at concrete reinforcement wire. It is 4 inch grid and comes in rolls or panels. You can find at home Depot or Lowe's, I believe.

The cattle panels are galvanized. I guess the oxidation on concrete reinforcement wire won’t hurt the plants.

We use remesh, which is the mesh version of rebar. It has six inch squares. It does oxidize, but we can get it in a 100’ roll for just over $100. We install it by zip-tying vertical panels to T-posts set at the ends of our tomato beds. Our beds are 4’ x 12’. We set four posts, each about six inches in from the long sides and just inside the short sides so that there is a post near each of the four corners of the bed. We set two more posts 6” in from the center of each long side for added support. We hang the vertical panels about eight inches above the ground. Then we cut another panel of the same length and put it up on top of the two panels, centered as a roof, and zip tie it to the vertical wall panels. We bend the overhang upward slightly so that it forms somewhat of an arch with the trellis in the next bed. This gives us an arch over the bed itself and an arch over the path. We shovel compost and used animal bedding into the tunnel down the middle of the beds to encourage the tomato plant roots to develop throughout the bed, even though the are planted just on the outside of the trellises. We tie a long piece of garden twine at the base of the trellis next to each plant. As the plant grows, we zigzag the twine back and forth across it to keep it supported by the trellis until it grows up through the roof panel and is then supported that way. The remesh is sturdy, but more bendable than livestock panels, so it needs more support and won’t hold an arch shape as well as a livestock panel. We cut it with bolt cutters. We found that the 2x4” welded wire was too small to allow for easy harvest because we couldn’t get our hands or the larger tomatoes through it. I walk through the tunnels to reach any fruit that I can’t get from the outside of the beds. I have grown beans and squash this way, too, with good success.

I can't wait for next springs garden! Thanks to you I have so many cool ideas. I grew a winter squash variety called North Georgia Candy Roaster and it's has literally crawled all over everything else and is even growing into my sunflowers and using them as a trellis. The fruit gets up to 10 lbs so it would need some support as it gets big but that's totally doable. And I'm positive ill keep growing them every year. And the cucumbers....I could have saved so much space! Oh btw, try putting small tomatoes cut in half(cut side up with a sprinkle of salt) in your new dehydrator...so good! I'm just loving your channel and the whole vibe of family, garden, animals!

Charity Smith You can grow large squash on a sturdy trellis by using old T-shirts, nets, or other material to make a hammock hung from the trellis to cradle the fruit. Pantyhose aren’t strong enough for large melons.

Save your mesh produce bags, potatoes, onions, etc and use those tied to the trellis to support the fruit like mentioned in the video.

I know I’m coming to this a little late so no doubt lots of comments I haven’t seen - The summer squash perfect for trellising is tromboncino. Wonderful flavor and easily grows fruits of 2 1/2 lbs while retaining excellent summer squash taste. There are delicious recipes for squash chips made from its long neck.

Yes! This video is so needed. Im accidentally growing pumpkin. Each year for the last 3 years I buy a pumpkin for the squirrels to enjoy. I place a pumpkin in a large pot and let the squirrels have at it for harvest season. Well... This year.... Pumpkins are actually starting to grow out of that pot. And I want to trellis this gift. Love what you've done with your garden! One way you could cut cost even more would be do away with the zippy ties. I use Romex (electric line). You can get a small roll, 20 ft or so, and remove the outer casing to expose the 3 wires inside. Works great for attaching cattle panels, etc. to the T-posts.

This was my first year with a small garden, and it was both vertical AND budget. I found more than enough livestock wire rolled up on the side of the road to make my trellises for free. I'm also getting my composting materials on the side of the road for free as well; grass clippings and now, leaves. This stuff is all out there for the taking, if you know where to look. I have several paper routes, and I find this stuff while I am already getting paid to literally scout these neighborhoods for free stuff. In fact, the $250 flat screen monitor I am using at the moment was found on the side of the road (we're moving, take what you want). Sometimes, the homeowners will even come out and ask me why I want this stuff. Once I explain it, they are all very open to the idea and usually wish me good luck in my endeavors. It's all free, Folks! take advantage of it!

We used an old spring bed frame and painted it and some older gates for our beans and found some old fencing for vertical gardening.
