Nice beds! Good little wooded spot for them as well. We are looking to put down beds once we shift premises, as stropharia is one mushroom that is approved for import and growth in NZ.

For wood chips, I get them from the local utilities company for free. They were out here trimming around power lines and I asked about just my own wood chips. Lol they dumped the entire load at the end of their day and encouraged me to let them to continue dumping chips here as often as I would like. They have trouble finding free places to dump them most times so mushroom and garden nerds like me are a good outlet for them. There's a short in my videos about it

I have an area of garden mulched with oak leaves I would like to innoculate with wine cap spawn. I would like to mix in some pine straw to provide air pockets in the leaves. Is this a reasonable thing to do? I have wine caps in a woodchip bed elsewhere in the yard.

Bacillus thuringiensis, serotype israelensis is a bacteria that kills fungus gnat larvae (the maggot looking things you described) and is indicated for use in organic gardening. It also kills Mosquito larvae if you put in standing water. It works well for vegetables, but I've not used it for mushrooms, so I'm not sure how much of a negative impact (if any) it would have on the mycelia since fungi and bacteria don't always get along. You could also try mixing some diatomaceous earth into the top inch or so of soil, because the gnats/larvae stay very close to the surface. Additionally, to tell the difference between fruit flies and fungus gnats, check the eyes and wings with a magnifying glass (I like 30x). Use those yellow sticky insect traps to prevent them from flying away (and laying more eggs). Fungus gnats have a prominent Y-shaped vein on their wings and black eyes. Fruitflies have red eyes and no Y-vein. Considering the location, however, I'm pretty sure you have fungus gnats.

Nobody mentions that these taste like grass. I was pretty successful at growing mushrooms that I dislike. Oh well oysters taste good.
