this was an excellent diagnosis video Jelle with great recommendations! hopefully it will do well in the long run as people search for "how to diagnose maple problems" or "maple leaves drooping" etc. 👍

Very interesting video. My Japanese maples are suffering too right now and unfortunately two of them are dead. I've just left them to grow in the medium they came in and I suspect the extremely wet spring we've had this year may have caused root rot. I really don't like to disturb the roots right now (july), but I see your point - they may die if I don't.

Hi @GrowingBonsai , I have a japanese maple(Atropurpureum) where the apex branch has turned black-ish in the bottom. The tree still looks alive, but has no leaves yet since I am living in Norway and spring starts pretty late here... Have you experienced the same? Any tips? Or should I just wait it out? Shame I cannot share a picture on youtube...

Hi Astur, great to see you here. Agreed. People are way to biased about "the right" substrate. In the end, species, position, climate care and substrate need to match and then the proverbial glass marbles will work as substrate. Just had a peek at your channel. Good for me to practice my spanish!

what would you recommend if the maple is still in the ground with similar issues as you showed in this video? i have 2 maples, in clay ground, who arent healthy as i would be. Thinking about digging them up in early spring and put them in large containers with a better soil. Good plan or??

Hey Yelle - Awesome Video My Maple is dying :(. The leaves curl up and some of the new growth doesnt make it. Its a gift from a club member and its in bonsai soil. I think its Verticillium or some sort of fungus/pest. What would you recommend as treatment this time of the year?

Hey .. If it really is verticillium.. There is no true cure that I know off. THere I would consider cutting my losses and tossing it. :( But are you sure it is?

@@GrowingBonsai I will inspect a branch to look for what you are showing in the video. The new leaves are deformed and curl up, the young growth barely makes it. I have no clue what it could be and i'm afraid if I mess with the roots at this time of the year it will die.

Hi, I have a Japanese maple for years and this spring it was full out with leafs and perfect. Just after few day of heavy rain and windy days the leafs on one side start curling up and fall and spread to the other beaches. I cut the dead branches but don't see the dark stain. I wonder if the tree can be saved or it's dead.

Thanks for your video! This also happened to me for the 3rd time now, recently with my acer shirasawanum Mr.Sun. Meanwhile I also believe that it is/was only my fault because of too much watering although drainage was good. How often would you water potted trees outside during winter when they don't get any water from rain?
@GrowingBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear this :( To be honest.. Never. But.. I live in a place in the world where somewhere mid-october till march normally it rains every other day and it is a relief when it is dry for a few days!
@Acerdorer2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick answer! Never...well, this is indeed considerably less than I expected but it also makes sense somehow. No leaves, no activity, almost no evaporation.
@GrowingBonsai2 жыл бұрын
@@Acerdorer That, but also, here everything is moist all the time for most of winter. It is important to realize that local climatic conditions are very important! In general, water when the tree needs it. So when the soil is at risk of drying out. In summer that might be twice a day. And in winter, none for weeks on end..

9 times out of 10, if there is a problem with Japanese Maples, it is a water problem. They do not like staying wet. If you live in a place where it rains alot, you need to keep them out of the rain. You must have a really good draining soil and check the soil frequently by sticking your finger all the way down in the soil. If you feel any amount of moisture, hold off on watering.
@zantlozantlom47522 жыл бұрын
Great video! I usually wash the roots when replanting. Why did you not do that with this one?
@GrowingBonsai2 жыл бұрын
I never wash roots when repotting unless the rootball really is full of dense clay that will not come out any other way. When repotting I minimize stress to the roots. As roots are covered with all sorts of roothairs, but also microbes, I prefer to leave them alone where possible.
